Abstract

A wheel alignment apparatus for fitting to the road wheels of a vehicle to determine the geometric values of the steering and suspension system, comprises a system using a dual point, gravity secured, self centering attachment (1), containing height control above ground (2), with a triple point rim pick-up (4). This apparatus houses a right angled, hair line imaged, light beam measuring device, (5), which by use of calibrated scales (8) determines the geometric values required. <IMAGE>

Description

WHEEL ALIGNMENT APPARATUS, This invention relates to an apparatus for attaching an angle measuring device to the road wheels of a vehicle.
It is well known in the vehicle service industry, that periodically, angle measuring devices must be attached to the road wheels of a vehicle, to determine the geometric values associated with the steering and sespension. These are normally attached asing either an expansion or contraction mechanical device or by use of ground support.
Making secure and simple attachment to modern shaped road wheels, of alloy or steel construction, without destroying the protective coating provided to saistain the cosmetic appearance, is both difficult and time consuming, as is the need to provide simple height control of the measuring unit, to conform to the general reduction in ground clearance of vehicles.
With respect to the present invention there is provided, an adjustable, self centering, quick locking, wheel attachment apparatus, comprising a dual point, gravity secured, tyre tread pick-up frame, which contains, adjustable triple point, rim pick-ups and houses a right angled, hair line imaged, measuring device for deterninin8 the geometric values on simple calibrated scales.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to accompanying drawing in which: Fig 1 Shows the self centering, dual pcht, gravity secured, tyre tread pick-up irame.
Fig 2 Shows the quick locking, height control clamp.
Fig 3 Shows the adjustable, lower rim pick-up point carrier.
Fig 4 Shows the actual rim pick-up buttons.
rig 5 Shows the right angled light beamed measuring device.
Fig 6 Shows the hair-line imaged light beam.
Fig 7 Shows a general view of the apparatus installed on a road wheel.
Fig 8 Shows the position of the scale on which the hair line image will register. (Two scales are used in the total concept, left hand recording right meaEareme ts and vice sere.) Refering to the drawing, the self centering, dual point, gravity secured, tyre tread pick-up frame, Fig I & Fig 3, along with the quick locking height control clamp, Fig 2, together house the right angled, hair line imaged, light beam angle measuring device. The actual rim pick-up buttons which are adJustable for postion on the frame are shown as Fig 4.
In order to install the apparatus on a road wheel, of a vehicle Fig 7, the complete apparatus is first hung on the top of the tyre, where gravity secures the frame to the tyre by angled pins contained in the dual point frame, Fig 7, The height control knob is then released to allow the main lower rim-pick up carrier, Fig 3, to be set at a height to match the ground clearance of the vehicle, when this is achieved, retighten the control knob.
Following this, the actual rim pick-up buttons are now adjusted to align with the rim edges, The complete apparatus is now ready to measure, it only remains for the power supply to be attached,(not shown) and the rear wheel scales to be fitted in the same manner as the main apparatus, (not shown) for the operation to be complete. This operation is recorded for explanation only and does not form part of any claim.
To remove the apparatus from the road wheel, disconnect the power supply, lift off the complete apparatus and return it to its storage trolley, ( Not show).
