Description

TEACHING AID FOR VAGINAL EXAMINATIONS AND DELIVERIES This invention relates to a teaching aid for use with a conventional fetal doll in order to perform simulated vaginal examinations and deliveries.
Teaching aids for vaginal examinations and / or deliveries are known models in the form of simulated part or parts of the reproductive organs cf the female, or simulated part of the birth canal. Tnere is: 1. A delivery phantom comprising a female torso witr abdominal cavity into which a fetal do ' car. be placed. This can then be manoeuvred through t simulated genitalia cf te birth canal.
2. A plastic model of an opened vaginal canal wit features of the pubic arch at the front opening.
3. A simulated pelvis cf the female whicr is a complete duolicatior of the female bony pelvis and comprises tre pelvic brim, cavity and the cutlet.
However the delivery phantom is cumbersome, expensive and limited to use for the mechanism of simulated delivery, because the birth canal and genitalia are not sufficiently detailed to permit accurate teaching of vaginal examination. Moreover, neither of these teaching aids contain any replication of the ssft tissue parts of the female birth canal.
According to the present invention, there is provided an aid for teaching vaginal examinations and deliveries in the form of a simulated birth canal. The main part is in the form of a tube, representing the pelvis which incorporates an inlet, cavity and an outlet. A soft elasticated fabric is used to fashion some parts of the female internal and external genitalia, namely the labia, vaginal orifice and canal, in the centre of the tube.
Accessories are also made from differert sized pieces of the same material as that used to make the parts of the female genitalia, and when placed over the head of a feta doll, they mimic either an uneffaced, a partially effaced or a fully effaced servix, but partially dilated cervical os.
Also provided is a stand comprising a tex with a ringed lid, the centre of which is hollowed out in a circular manner, s that the simulated birth canal can be mounted and secured prior to use.
Tt has the means for securing and releasing the simulated birth canal and for attachment to a flat sur--ze in order to give overall stability.
Figure 1 shows in perspective the front view of the teaching aid displaying the features of the female genitalia, mounted and secured on the stand.
Figure 2 shows the teaching aid separated fro the stand.
Figure 3 shows the back view of the teaching aid.
Figure 4 shows the back view of the core of the tube, featuring the pelvic inlet.
Figure 5 shows the front view of the core of the tube representing the pelvic outlet.
Figure 6 shows an accessory which when placed over the head of a fetal doll, simulates an uneffaced cervix but partially dilated cervical os to 1 - 2 centimetres.
Figure 7 shows an accessory which when placed over the head of a fetal doll, simulates a partially effaced cervix and a partially dilated cervical os te 3 centimetres.
Figure 8 shows an accessory which when place over the head cf a fetal doll, simulates a fully effaced cervix with an Os which is centimetres dilated but stretches to 4 centimetres.
Figure 9 shows an accessory which when place over the head of a fetal doll, simulates a fully effaced cervix, the os cf whlor. is dilated te a loose 5 centimetred but could be stretched to simulate up te a 9 centimetres dilated cervical o.
Figure 10 shows the stand with its lid, displaying the hollow in the centre and means for securing and releasing the teaching aid.
Figure 11 shows the stand displaying its hinged lid and the means for attachment to a flat surface.
Referring to the drawing, the teaching aid in the form of a simulated birth canal as shown in Figure 2.
To allow a simulated vaginal delivery, using a fetal doll (not provided), to be carried out, the main part of the teaching aid is in the form of a tube as displayed in Figure 2, which represents the pelvis and incorporates the inlet as shown in Figure 4, the cavity D and an outlet as shown in Figure 5. There is also a vaginal orifice A, and a vaginal canal B, fashioned in the centre of the tube as shown in Figures 1 and 2, with. a soft elasticated fabric C. The vaginal canal B extends from the orifice k to the centre of the other end of the tube as illustrated in Figure 3, which serves as passage through which a fetal doll could be pusnec on order to simulate E vaginal delivery.
To allow a simulated vaginal examination to be carries cut. the accessories as shown In FIgures , 7, t and are also mace of a soft elastlcated fabric C to allow further dilatation of the os S when placed over the heat of a fetal doll an stretched. The rims cf accessories shown in Figures 6 and 7 are stuffed wit very soft fabric (not shown) to simulate uneffaced Figure 6 and partially effaced Figure 7 cervix Ff, when placed over a fetal dcll's head The rims cf accesscries shown in Figure ; 7 are left unstuffed in order to simulate the feel of a fully effaced cervix F when placed over a fetal doll's head.
In order to give overall stability for the teaching aid as shown in Figure 2, a stand in the form of a box G is provided with a hinged lid H as displayed in Figure 11 and is hollowed out in the centre as shown in Figure 10, where the teaching aid is mounted and secured with a catch I prior to use, as shown in Figure 1. An overall stability is achieved by suction pads J which secure the stand G to a flat surface prior to use, by suction.
