Abstract
The protective cover for an article of furniture, e.g. a divan bed, comprises a first portion 5 adapted to cover part of a base 2 and a second portion 3 in the form of an envelope is located over one end of a mattress 4 located on the base. The first and second portions are joined together by VELCRO strip 11 to hold them in place when secured to the bed. The portion 5 has curved adjoining walls 8 at the lower corners with apertures 9 for the legs or castors of the bed to hold the portion 5 fitted to the bed base. A flap 15 is provided in one wall of the base portion 5 to provide access to a drawer 16 in the base. <IMAGE>
Description
"ROTECTIVE COVER FOR FURNITURE"
This invention relates to protective covers for furniture and more particularly to a protective cover for a divan bed.
It is known to cover the upper surface of a mattress, when placed in a showroom, with a protective sheet particularly the area at the foot of the bed where the feet are placed when lying down on the bed, so that prospective buyers can try out the bed without removing their footware. However, a further difficulty arises when divan beds, or other upholstered furniture, are displayed in sale rooms and stores in that they are often knocked or subjected to damage by people inadvertently kicking against the divan has. The article of furniture thus becomes unsuitable for sale unless it is repaired which can often be expensive.
An aim of the present invention is to provide a protective cover for the foot of the mattress and divan base which protects them from the above referred to damage.
According to the present invention, there is provided a proective cover for an article of furniture comprising a first portion adapted to cover at least part of the furniture base and a second portion adapted to cover at least part of the upholstered mattress or cushion supported on the base, wherein the first and second portions are joined together to hold them in place when secured to the article of furniture.
Preferably, the second portion is in the form of an envelope located on one end of the mattress or cushion and the first portion is secured to the legs or castors of the article of furniture.
Conveniently, the first and second portions of the cover are releasably joined together, for example by
VELCRO strip.
An embodiment of the protective cover, according to the invention, will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a double
divan bed fitted with a protective cover,
according to the invention,
and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view
of a reinforced corner of the protective
cover shown in Figure 1.
The protective cover is fitted to the foot of a double divan bed 2. The protective cover comprises a portion 3 which is in the form of an envelope fitted over one end of a mattress 4 of the divan bed.
Another portion 5 has three sides Sa, Sb and Sc and an upper part 6 fitted over the end of the divan base 7.
The lower corners of the walls 5a to Sc have curved adjoining walls 8 with apertures 9 for locatior.
over the bred legs cr castors (not shown).
The cover is made of a transparent polyvinyl chloride material with welded piping along the cover edges.
Alternatively the parts of the cover may be stitched together. The envelope portion has three pieces of felt VELCRO strip 11 which join to corresponding claw strips on the portion 5 to join the two portions of the cover firmly together preventing movement between the mattress 4 and the divan base 7.
The corners of the first portion 5 covering the base have sleeves 12 in which are inserted relatively thick inserts 13 of polyvinyl chloride, see Figure 2, to form reinforced areas where knocks to the bed's base are most likely to occur. These reinforced areas may he made in situ during manufacture by stitching or welding the thickened areas permanently to the cover. The cover may be provided with advertising or display information which can be printed directly on the protective cover or on separate sheets of material which are inserted in pockets welded to the portion as shown at 14.
The end wall 5b of the first portion 5 may be provided with a flap 15 which can be lifted to allow access to a drawer 16 in the divan base.
The protective cover of the invention is readily fitted to a bed on display in a showroom and provides a washable foot protector from soilinq by footware worn by a person lying on the bed to try it out.
The portion protecting the base prevents the upholstery from getting damaged when manoeuvring the.bed in the showroom or from the footware of customers inadvertently kicking the base.
Various modifications may be made to the protective cover, for example instead of releasably joining the first and second portions together with VELCRO strip, other securinq means such as an appropriate number of press-stud fasteners can be used.
Although the preferred embodiment describes the cover as beinq of transparent plastic material with welded piping alonq its edges, the parts of the cover may instead be assembled by stitching. Similarly, the preferred embodiment describes the base portion with curved adjoining walls with apertures to locate over the bed legs or castors, these may be substituted by other fixing means such as elasticated loops stitched to the cover base.
It will be obvious that the protective cover may be made in a variety of sizes to fit a bed, cot or other article of furniture of any width, depth or length available.
