Abstract

A windscreen washer and wiper arrangement, for example, for a motor vehicle, comprises a windscreen wiper (3) including means for sweeping the wiper periodically across the windscreen, a windscreen washer (6) for directing a jet of liquid onto the windscreen, and means (4,5) for ejecting a pulsed jet of liquid from the washer in dependence upon the passage of the wiper across the windscreen. The latter may comprise a rotary pump operated intermittently, or a piston pump actuated by sweeping of the wiper across the windscreen. Alternatively, a pump actuated by operation of a parking switch may be used to produce a pulsed jet of liquid. <IMAGE>

Description

WINDSCHREEN WASHEP ARRANGEMENT The present invention relates to windscreen washer arrangement particularly, but not exclusively, for notor vehicles.
It is usual with rotor vehicles to provide e a windscreen wiper to sweep a water from the windscreen, for example as a result of rain or spray fron other vehicles, In addition, it is usual to provide a windscreen washer, for example in the forir of a nozzle directinq a jet of water onto the windscreen, to enable tl.e driver to clean the windscreen in conjunction with the windscreen wiper. The windscreen washer may be operable by the driver manually independently of the wiper or tfe washer nay be operates in conjunction zith the wiper. However, with either arrangernent the use of the water is inefficient and can lead to poor visibility for the driver.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a windscreen washer and wiper arrangement which leads to more efficient use of water and better visibility for the driver.
According to the present invention there is provided a windscreen washer and wiper arrangerlent which comprises a windscreen wiper, including means for sweeping the wiper periodically acros the windscreen, a windscreen washer for directing a jet of liquid onto the windscreen, and neans for erecting a pulsed jet of liquid frown the washer in dependence upon the passage of the wiper across the wlndscreen.
In one embodiment of the invention the windscreen washer includes a rotary pump which is operated intermittently to provide the pulsed jet of liquid. The operation of the rotary pump may be controlled by an electronic cotrol unit (ECU), for example of the vehicle in which it is installed. Alternatively, where the windscreen wiper includer a motor having a parking switch, the pulses may be dependent or tiie operation of the parking switch.
In another embodiment of the invention the sweeping of the wiper across the windscreen nay operate a piston pump which provides the pulsed jet of liquid.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show nore clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of exanple, to the acconpanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of one enbodinent of a windscreen washer and wiper arrangenent according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a diagrammatic illustration of a second enbodinent of a windscreen washer and wiper arrangement accordiny to the present invention; and Figure 3 is a d diagrammatic illustration of a third eLbodinent of a windscreen washer and wiper arrangement accordinG to the present invention.
The windscreen washer and wiper assembly shown in Figure 1 conprises a wiper notor 1 operating a windscreen wiper arm 2 having a wiper blade 3 attached thereto. Title wiper rotor 1 is controlled by ari electronic control unit 4 which also controls a pun 5, such as rotary or piston puny, which ejects a pulsed jet of water or other liquid fro; nozzle 6. The jet of water is timed by the electronic control unit 4 to reach the windscreen of the vehicle immediately before the arrival of the wiper blade 3.This ensures that the water does not flow away from the windscreen before the arrival of the wiper blade and thus permits more effective use of the water and prevents the dispersing water from obstructing the visibility of the vehicle driver.
Tii assembly shown in Figure Z is sinilar to that shown in Figure 1 in tilat a wiper motor 11 operates a windscreen wiper arm 12 having a blade 13 attached thereto. However, the wiper notor incorporates a parking switch 14 which controls the resting position of the wiper blade 13. The parking swistch 14 is also used to deterr.iine the operation of purnip 15 to eject a pulsed jet of water or other liquid from nozzle 16.
According to assembly shown in Figure 3, a wiper motor 21 operates a windscreen wiper arm 22 having a blade 23.
The operation oi tile wiper art 22 is use( directly or indirectly to operate a plunger 24 of piston pump 25 to eject a pulse' get of water or other liquid fro nozzle 2.

Claims (6)

1.
