Abstract

A paint composition includes at least one perfume agent.

Description

AN EMULSION PAINT COMPOUND This invention relates to a method of manufacturing paint and to an emulsion paint compound.
Water based emulsion paints have been used for many years, by far their most common use being as a covering for interior walls and ceilings.
The present invention provides an emulsion paint compound, such that the emulsion paint compound, when applied to a surface, such as a wall, releases a fragrance over an extended period of time after the compound has dried, the period being typically several months.
Household emulsion paints are based on polymer lattices and are generally stabilized by a combination of surfactants and protective colloids. Coalescing solvents may be added to improve film formation, and the pigment is dispersed in the continuous phase with suitable surfactants, additives, and water soluble thickeners.
The dispersion and latex are blended by efficient mixing to form an emulsion paint compound. After application, the dried emulsion paint film retains a degree of sensitivity and porosity. It is the existence of a porous matrix which is exploited by a perfume compound in accordance with the present invention.
A typical emulsion paint compound may comprise a titanium dioxide pigment, a calcium carbonate extender, sodium polyphosphate as a dispersant, sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose as a thickener, a bacteriocide, a coalescing solvent, a film former, an alkaline adjuster and water. The dispersant and thickener hold the pigment in suspension.
In accordance with the method of the present invention, a perfume compound is added to the paint compounds listed above either during, or at the final step of the manufacture. The perfume compound may have an ingredient which dissolves in the continuous phase (mainly water) of the emulsion paint compound, and also an ingredient which combines or is mixed with the discontinuous or globule phase, i.e. the pigment phase, and is held in dispersion by the dispersant, the thickener and the coalescing solvent.
The perfume compound preferably comprises a pluramity of ingredients selected for their odourous and retentive qualities. Highly volatile ingredients are preferably avoided due to their short period of effectiveness and instead combination of, for example, synthetic musks, amber and wood notes are used.
Terpenes are particularly suitable. Due to the quality required, perfumes of natural origin, which tend to be considerably more expensive than synthetic ingredients, are only used in small quantities. To aid dispersion of the perfume compound in the emulsion paint medium, the perfume ingredients may be dissolved in a solvent such as diethylphthalate or benzyl benzoate and specific surface active ingredients are added prior to incorporation in the emulsion paint compound.
Depending on the strength of the perfume ingredients and the required strength of the fragrance, the percentage of perfume compound in the emulsion paint compound may be in the range 0.05 to 20 ,'. Tests have indicated that the perfume frgrance is released both from the emulsion paint compound in its liquid form and after it has dried, the period of detectable release being as long as two years in some cases.
Using the invention, it is possible to mask unpleasant odours during the application of emulsion paint, and, particularly on drying, the perfume remains incorporated in the paint film matrix, being slowly released and thereby acting as an air freshener fragrancing the environment and combating bad and unpleasant odours such as tobacco smoke and pet odours.
One non-limiting example of an emulsion paint formulation for use in the invention is as follows: "Silk" Gloss Emulsion Paint Rutile titanium dioxide 20.00 Pigment Calcium carbonate 7.00 Extender Sodium polyphosphate 1.00 Dispersant Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose 0.30 Thickener Proxel CLR 0.50 Bactericide Antifoam 0.30 Butyl 'Carbitol' acetate 2.00 Coalescing solvent Vinyl acetate/vinyl 'Versate' latex (55 solids) 42.00 Film former Ammonia (0.880) 0.30 Alkalinity control Water 26.87 100.00 Proxel CLR is a solution of 1,2 benzisothiazoline-3-one and an amine in water from ICI Organics Division.
