Description
Boxing Training Device.
IEle present invention is a device for training boxers, more particularly for training them to respond to counterpunches.
The training of boxers in punching skills usually takes one of two forms, namely the use of a punchbag or punchball on the one hand or actual boxing with a sparring partner on the other.
Sparring inevitably entails the presence of a suitable opponent and may be difficult to arrange spontaneously or at short notice.
However, training with a punohbag or punchball is of much more limited soope and cannot teach a boxer hew to respond properly to a skilful counterpunch.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a device Qhich is conceived specifically with training in response to counterpunches in mind.
The device according to the present invention comprises a support for a vertical pivot, at least two pads, spaced from said vertical pivot and fran each other on opposite sides of said vertical pivot for pivoting about said pivot, and means to vary the height above the ground of said pivot or of at least one of said pads.
The pads together represent both the part of an opponents body or head which is being punched and also the opponent's gloved fist by which a counterpunch is delivered. Thus a punch delivered upon one pad by the boxer in training gives rise to an immediate simulated counterpunch fan the other pad.
The device is built upon the support which carries the vertical pivot. That support may extend upwardly fran a base or the support may be provided with means for mounting upon the ceiling or upon a wall. Thus in one preferred form the support is a tubular downward extension from a bracket adapted for mounting upon the ceiling.
The vertical pivot may conveniently be located at the lower end of a ceilingemDunted support or at the upper end of a groundmounted support. While any suitable pivot may satisfactorily perform the intended function, it is much preferred that the pivot be of a type having very little frictional resistance to pivoting, for example a pivot incorporating a ball race in the bearing. If desired, provision may be made for adjusting the resistance to pivoting, in order to modify the response of the simulated counterprnch to the punch applied by the boxer using the device.
At least two pads are mounted for pivoting about the pivot.
The pads are spaced away fmm the pivot and fram each other on opposite sides of the pivot. This spacing may be achieved by locating the two pads on arms extending radially away fram the pivot on opposite sides thereof. Such arms need not be diametrically aligned opposite to each other but it is convenient and advantageous that they be aligned in this way. The arms may be linear anns, which may be displaced or displaceable fran each other in a vertical direction, or at least one of the ants may be vertically cranked or curved so that the two pads are at different vertical heights. In this way, the simulated counterpunch may be delivered at a different height fram the punch which initiated it, for example to simulate a counterpunch to the body in response to a punch to an opponent's head.
At least one additional pad may be provided, which may be fixed, that is non-pivoting, relative to the pivot support, to afford a further target for the boxer's punches and allow him to deliver at least two punches in quick succession before defending himself against the simulated counterpunch.
It is an essential feature of the device according to the present invention that sane form of height-adjustment means be provided, in order to adapt to the heights of different boxers.
It is particularly preferred that the pivot point itself be vertically adjustable, for example by telescopic adjustment of a tubular pivot support. Either as an alternative or as an additional feature, at least one of the pivotallyunted pads may be vertically adjustable, for example by vertical linear adjustment of a bracket from which a pad-carrying arm extends or by pivotal adjustment of such an arm about a horizontal pivot.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 illustrates in vertical sectional
view one embodiment of the boxing training
device according to the present
invention; and
Figs. 2, 3, 4 & 5 illustrate in somewhat schematic elevations four
alternative embodiments of the device
according to the invention.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1, a tubular socket 5, extending vertically downwardly from a mounting brackets (not shown) by means of which the device is secured to a ceiling or wall, has telescopically slidable therein a solid cylindrical pivot support 6. The relative axial positions of the socket 5 and support 6 are set by means of a locating bolt 7, which is located in one of several holes in the support 6.
A ball race 8 is secured at the lower end of the support 6 between a bearing housing 9 and a bearing cap 10, by means of a bolt 11 engaging an internally threaded socket in a cylindrical downward extension 12 of the pivot support 6. Welded to the bearing housing 9 and extending radially outwardly in diametrically opposed directions are two tubular arms 13, each bearing at its outer end a flat, generally rectangular pad 14. Each pad 14 is forned from a resilient foamed plastics material wrapped around a wooden former 15 and is securely enclosed in a covering layer of leather or polyvinyl chloride.
When the device of Fig. 1 is to be used for training purposes, the height above ground of the ms 13 is adjusted by means of the bolt 7 until the pads 14 are at a level appropriate for the boxer He then uses the device by delivering punches to one of the pads 14 and defending himself against the counterpunches delivered by the other pad.
The device shcrwn in Fig. 2 comprises a pivot 20 located at the lower end of a support 21. Means (not shewn) are provided for adjusting the vertical position of the support 21. Arms 22 extending radially outwardly and at a dawned angle fran the pivot 20 are braced apart by a cross-bar 23. At the end of each arm 22 is a resilient foam ball 24 and a corresponding part-spherical pad 25 is supported by the cross-bar 23. In using this device, the boxer delivers at least two punches in succession to the pad 25 and one of the balls 24 in turn, before defending himself against the counterpunch fran the other pad.
In the training device shown in Fig. 3, a vertically-adjustable pivot 30 is supported by a tubular pivot support 31. A single radial arm 32 extends fran the pivot 30 and carries at its end a pad 33. Adjustably secured by a locking bolt 34 to a bracket 35 on the opposite side of the pivot 30 from the arm 32 is a cranked arm 36 carrying a pad 37 at its outer end. By adjustment of the bolt 34, the vertical height of the pad 37 may be varied relative to that Of the pad 33.
Referring now to Fig. 4, the training device illustrated is in many ways similar to that of Fig. 2, except that the radially and downwardly extending arms 40 are articulated. Each arm 40 comprises a fixed inner arm section 41 and an outer arm section 42, pivoted at 43 to the free end of the arm section 41. By pivotal adjustment of the position of each arm section 42 relative to the corresponding arm section 41, the heights of two foam balls 45 may be individually adjusted.
The device illustrated in Fig. 5 is a floorenounted device and is specifically designed for use with the base section of a conventional sprung punchball without modification of the latter.
That base section comprises a heavy base 50 and a tubular vertical oolumn 51 welded to the base.
Telescopically slidable within the column 51 is a pivot support 52, the vertical height of which may be adjusted by means of a locking bolt 53. At its upper end, the support 52 carries a pivot 54, mounted in a ball race for rotation about a vertical axis. Articulated arms 55, welded to the pivot 54, extend radially outwardly therefrom in aligned opposite directions.
Each arm 55 carries a spherical foam pad 56 at its outer end and a further pad 57 is mounted upon the pivot 54. Adjustment of the height above ground level of the individual pads 56 is readily achieved by pivoting of the outer sections of the articulated arms 55 as indicated by the arrows.
In a modification of the device illustrated in Fig. 5, the pivot support 52 is articulated about a horizontal pivot located above the top of the column 51, to enable the upper end of the support 52 to be tipped forwardly or rearwardly fram the vertical and secured in that inclined position. In this way, the simulated counterpunches may be caused to cane fran a direction other than the horizontal.
The device according to the present invention, as exemplified by the illustrated embodiments, makes it possible for a boxer to develop his punching and defensive skills without the need to enlist the aid of a sparring partner. Indeed he is able to arrange his training in this respect spontaneously when an opportunity arises. A particular advantage of the device is that, after he has been given a limited amount of basic instruction in the relevant skills, he is able by means of the device to develop the various skills of body movement (for example ducking and swaying) and footwork without further detailed coaching or other supervision.
