Operating and controlling doors by springs and checks.-In a device with a closing spring and a check device in the form of a friction brake, the check consists of a fixed brake-shoe that engages a rotatable drum or other rotary member connected with the door-closing lever and having a brake surface shaped to allow the door to close freely at the end of its closing movement. A second spring may also be provided to assist in the checking movement of the door. The lever connections between the check device and the door provide for the door to be held in the fullyopen position. In the arrangement shown, the closing spring d and an oppositely-wound weaker spring e that serves as a door check are mounted in a cylinder a secured to the door frame. Between the springs is arranged a member b integral with the lever b<3>. This member carries a pair of trunnions b<1>, b<2> that engage sleeves c, c<1> integral with ratchet wheels c<2>, c<3>, and these ratchet wheels are each engaged by resilient arms b<5> on the centrally-positioned member b. The upper ends of the members c, c<1> are mounted in the closure members a<1>, a<2> of the casing and are formed with extensions c<4> for tensioning the springs d, e. The member b is engaged by a brake shoe g<1> attached to the fixed casing a, the surface of the member b being cam-shaped or cut away so that as the door closes the frictional effect gradually or quickly decreases. The brake shoe may be spring-pressed into engagement with the movable brake surface on the member b. The lever b<3> and the lever h connecting it to the door may be suitably proportioned to permit the door to remain in the fullyopened position. For mounting the device, the casing a may be formed with an arcuate plate i which may be fitted to an adapter plate, j secured over the frame moulding. Both of the springs d, e may be arranged on the same side of the member b.
