Description

Improvements in or relating to Electrical Connectors This invention relates to electrical connectors, and more particularly to connectors for use with metal pipelines and similar elongate multi-part structures for ensuring electrical connection between separate parts of the pipeline or similar structure.
It is known with such pipelines and similar structures, that if electrical contact between the pipes at couplings and other forms of inter-connection is not maintained, it is possible for charge or electrical potential to build up in part of the pipeline system which can, if suddenly discharged, lead to dangerous and/or fire-producing results.
To this end it has previously been proposed to provide various forms of connector which link the individual pipes or similar elongate multi-element structures across inter-connecting members such as pipe couplings to ensure that there is always an electrical path along the pipeline between separate elements thereof, leading to equipotential bonding therebetween. Such connectors are herinafter called electric connectors of the kind described".
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and effective connector of the kind described.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention there is provided a connector for pipes or similar structures comprising an elongate body adapted to pass through an encircling coupling for the pipes or similar structures between the coupling and the pipes being connected thereby, and to radially overlie sealing gasket or gaskets of the coupling, each end of the connector being provided with a radially inwardly directed tag adapted in use to engage in electrical contact upon the pipe to be connected, and a radially outwardly directed clip adapted to secure upon the outer portions of the coupling.
Means may be provided for electrically contacting the connector to the coupling. This may be adjacent each end of the connector and may be by means of a radially outwardly extending sharply edged protrusion in each case. rivet, for example.
In accordance with a further aspect of the present invention there is provided an electrical connector of the kind previously described comprising a strip of spring metal adapted to lie within and axially along a coupling for a pipe or similar structure and conform to the inner configuration of the coupling, the connector being arranged at each end for electrical connection to the inner surface of the coupling, and having at its end-most portions at each end, an inclined inwardly directed tag portion adapted to connect electrically with pipes or similar structures located within the coupling, and an outwardly directed clip portion at each end adapted to overlie the ends of the coupling and hold the connector in place therewith.
The invention includes within its scope a pipe coupling incorporating an electrical connector as hereinabove defined.
By means of the invention, it is possible to ensure that the electrical connector is assembled and sold integrally with the coupling. Not only does this ensure that the connector is always present with the coupling, but also ensures that the connector is easily assembled with the coupling about the relevant pipes for example. This is because it can be simply arranged that the coupling to which the connector is attached, is assembled in a normal manner about the pipes. The connector being visible at all times, ensures the correct installation thereof, whereas with non-visible internal connectors previously used, there could be no certainty of correct installation unless additional checking were carried out.
In addition,-the connector in use being outside the pipe gasket or gaskets, although inside the coupling, does not come into contact with potentially corrosive fluid within the associated pipes.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood two embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of an electrical connector in accordance with one embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation showing the electrical connector of Figure 1 located within a coupling about a pair of coupled pipes; and Figure 3 is a side elevation of a second embodiment of an electrical connector in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 it is to be seen that the electrical connector comprises pressed stainless steel strip 1 adapted to conform to the inner configuration of a ductile iron pipe coupling 2.
The connectoras can be seen, radially overliesa membrane gasket 3 associated with the coupling for providing a seal with protective coated ductile iron pipes tri,5 connected thereby. In the embodiment illustrated, the coupling is of the type having at least two arc-like portions connected together about the pipes. The connector is provided with biforcated inwardly inclined tabs 6 at each end whose edges are resiliently urged through the portective coating and into contact with the two pipes on securing of the coupling to ensure electrical contact between them.
In addition radially outwardly turned clips 7 at each end engage the axially ends 8 of the coupling 2 so as to hold the clip firmly in location thereupon.
Punched holes 11 at each end of the connector with sharp edges ensure electrical contact with the coupling.
The arrangement of Figure 3 is the same as that of Figures 1 and 2 except that in this case, the design of the radially outwardly extending clips 9 at each end is not provided with the curved portion 10 of that of Figures 1 and 2.
By means of the invention we have provided an arrangement for ensuring electrical contact between adjacent pipes and the coupling in a pipeline system of simple and effective construction which can be assembled integrally with the coupling to avoid misplacement and to ensure simplicity of assembly.
Some advantages of the arrangement are that: a) The connection is not in contact with the fluid being carried by the pipes and thus is not susceptible to attack from corrosive fluids therewithin.
b) Pipe withdrawn from and deflection within the coupling are not limited or affected by its introduction.
c) The action of effecting the seal also makes- the electrical contact.
d) It is easy to ensure a connector has been provided, which was not the case with previous internal connectors.
e) It is visually easy to check correct installation and condition of the connector in service.
