Abstract
220,346. Mather, C., and Walker & Sons, Ltd., S. April 13, 1923. Feeding and registering webs.- Scrimp rails of the kind comprising sheet-metal blades secured to a foundation plate have blades secured to a metal foundation plate by dipping the whole in molten solder or by individually soldering or spot welding the blades to the foundation plate. The rails may have two or more operative faces with blades projecting to different extents so that by changing the position of the rail it may be employed for fabrics requiring different amounts of extension. In one form, Figs. 1 and 4, a metal foundation plate 30 is cambered transversely and provided with two sets of diverging slots 31 to receive sheet-metal blades 32 having tongues 321 or notches to engage the plate 30. The blades are separately soldered or spot welded to the plate 30 or the blades and plate are immersed in molten metal, and additional securing of the blades may be obtained by previously turning over the parts of the blades beneath the plate. The plate, may be secured by flanges 301 to a wooden base 33, or to a second plate 37, Fig. 5, or two foundation plates with blades may be secured back to back. In addition to the transverse camber, the plate 30 may be curved longitudinally. Figs. 19 and 20 show a rail in the form of a grid, the blades 47 being soldered or spot welded in notches formed in two foundation plates 453 of angle form. A stay wire 46 may extend through the plates. In other forms of scrimp rail, Figs. 15 and 17, the blades 322 are of channel form and soldered or welded to one or both faces of the foundation plate 42, Fig. 15, or passed through slots 431, Fig. 17, in the foundation plate 43 and afterwards soldered. The rail may be secured to a backing plate 44.
