Abstract

A preservative for stone comprises linseed oil, turpentine and, optionally, olive oil. Preferred mixtures are 2.5 parts linseed oil and 1 part of turpentine, or 4 parts linseed oil, 1 part olive oil and 2 parts turpentine.

Description

Preserving Stone The present invention relates to a preservative for stone.
Existing preservatives for stone suffer from the disadvantage that, after coating the stone therewith, the stone is unable to breathe naturally which causes deterioration in the condition of the interior of the stone material.
The present invention seeks to overcome or reduce the bove disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a p-eervative comprising linseed oil and turpentine.
There may be 1 to three parts of linseed oil for each par of turpentine.
Also a cording to the present invention there is provided a method of preserving stone comprising the application to the surface thereof of a preservative as set out in the preceding paragraph.
To obtain a preferred product in accordance with the present invention 2.5 parts of boiled linseed oil is mixed with 1 part of pure turpentine.
When applied to the surface of stone material, the above compost n is absorbed rather than forming a coating over t e stone. It has the advantages of preventing lich-n5 moss growth and algi, and also preventing penetwasion by the natural elements and acid rain. At the same time it permits the stone to breathe naturally sc: that it has no adverse side effects.
In modified mixtures the ratio of linseed oil to turpentine may vary between 3 and 1 preferably between 2.8 and 2.0. In addition small amounts of one or more additives may be incorporated.
In further modified mixtures approximately one fifth of the linseed oil is replaced by olive oil which provides improved preservation properties. Thus a preferred mixture comprises 4 parts linseed oil, 1 part olive oi and 2 parts of pure turpentine. However, te proportion of olive oil may vary, e.g. between 12% and 20% of the mixture.
