Abstract

A railway switch slide baseplate comprises a cast iron base member (1) with a flat plastics bearing pad (2) secured by a single bolt (6) to the base member and located by a nose (4) engaging a corresponding recess (5) in the base member. The pad can be removed without disturbing either the base member, the stock rail or the switch blade, by removing two of the baseplate anchor bolts and the pad bolt (6) and sliding the pad rearwardly (12) clear of the switch blade. <IMAGE>

Description

Railway Switch Slide Baseplates This invention relates to switch slide baseplates for railway track. Such baseplates are used to fixedly support - the stock rail at a switch and to slidably support a switch blade so that the blade can be moved between its two positions.
In the past the baseplates have been made as iron castings and in order to ensure reliability it has been necessary at regular intervals to lubricate manually the top bearing surface for the switch blade.
More recently the bearing surface has been provided by a self-lubricating plastics pad which is located in a pocket cast into the top surface of the baseplate. The problem which has arisen with the use of such a bearing arrangement is that either the slide baseplate or the rails have to be removed in order to replace the plastic bearing pad. The object of the present invention is to overcome this problem.
According to the invention a switch slide baseplate has a bearing surface provided by a plastics pad which is supported on the baseplate, the plastics pad having a nose at one end which interfits with a recess formed in the top baseplate to restrain lateral movement of the pad and from which the nose is withdrawable by sliding the pad rearwardly over the surface of the baseplate and the pad is also secured at its other end to the baseplate by a removable bolt, whereby when the bolt is removed the plastics pad can be slid from beneath a switch blade supported on the baseplate and off the baseplate.
One slide baseplate in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows an exploded perspective view of the baseplate.
The baseplate comprises iron casting 1 and dry self-lubricating plastic bearing pad 2 which locates as partly shown by chain-dotted lines 3 on to the casting 1 with its nose 4 locating in the complementarily shaped recess 5 in the casting 1 to provide a bearing surface for the switch blade (not shown). The pad 2 is secured to the casting 1 by coach bolt 6.
The stock rail whose location is diagramatically represented by chain dotted lines 7, is supported against shoulder 8 of upstand 9 forming part of the casting 1.
As can be seen from the drawing, the pad 2 is constrained against lateral movement by screw 6 and the interfitting of its nose 4 with recess 5. Hence removal of the pad 2 is readily brought about by the removal of the single bolt 6 and the two adjacent baseplate holding down screws (not shown) which fit through holes 11 into the underlying sleeper. The pad 2 can then be slid out rearwardly (i.e. in the direction of arrow 12) from beneath the stock rail and switch blade and replaced by a new bearing pad 2 which is slid forwardly under the switch blade and stock rail and then fastened in position by bolt 6. The screws are then replaced in holes 11.

Claims (6)

1. A slide baseplate for a railway switch, comprising a base member and a low-friction bearing pad having an upwardly facing bearing surface for the switch blade to slide on, the pad being supported on the base member and secured to it in such a way that it can be removed from the base member by sliding it over the latter until free of the in-situ switch blade.
2. A baseplate according to Claim 1 wherein the pad is of plastics.
3. A baseplate according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the base member has a recess into which one end of the pad fits so as to locate the pad against lateral movement on the base member.
4. A baseplate according to Claim 3, wherein the pad has a nose at one end to fit in the said recess, and means towards it other end, clear of the sweep of the switch blade, for removably securing the pad to the base member.
5. A baseplate according to Claim 4 wherein the removable securing means comprise a single bolt.
6. A slide baseplate for a railway switch, substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
