Abstract

A vehicle power take off device consists of one or more rotating elements, 1 and 7, through which the power available at a vehicle driven wheel/tyre, 4/5, can be transferred to a variety of power absorbing equipment/machinery. The integral or coupled power absorbing equipment may consist of an electricity generator, pump or compressor or other portable or fixed equipment. <IMAGE>

Description

VEHICLE POWER TAKE OFF This invention relates to a vehicle power take off.
Conventional vehicle power take off systems usually involve a specialised drive arrangement using supplementary gear boxes, driveshafts and/or hydraulic couplings. They are only provided on agricultural, heavy duty or specially modified vehicles.
According to the present invention, there is provided a vehicle power take off device which can directly transfer some or all of a conventional vehicle's engine power by placing a vehicle driven wheel/tyre in physical contact with a rotating member(s) which in turn can provide rotation to integral or coupled power absorbing machinery or equipment. A variety of power absorbing equipment can be used. Examples being electrical generators, pumps/ compressors for gases, fluids or solids, or mechanical connections to other portable or fixed equipment.
The power take off consists, in many instances, of one or more rollers, or similar rotating elements, against which the driving wheel/tyre of a vehicle is placed. The vehicle engine is run with a transmission gear selected so that the vehicle wheel/tyre and roller(s) rotate. The equipment absorbing the power, or transmitting it to other machinery, is either incorporated within the rotating roller(s) or is connected, internally or externally, to the roller(s). Speed control of the vehicle wheel and hence the drive mechanism may be necessary.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of an example, to the accompanying drawing in which the single Figure diagrammatically illustrates the vehicle power take off.
The vehicle power take off shown in the Figure consists of two rollers 1 and 7 supported on bearings (not shown) at each of their ends in the side support members 3 and 8. The vehicle wheel and tyre 4 and 5 have been driven up the ramp 9 on to the two rollers. The rollers can transfer the rotation to the power absorbing load through one or both of the output shaft(s) 2 and-6 or directly from the internal or external surface of the roller(s). In order to ensure that the power absorbing load is driven at the correct speed, a vehicle speed control may be necessary. This may take the form of an engine fuel/air inlet controller working from a manually adjusted linkage or a speed governor.
To permit the vehicle to be driven off the roller(s) a method of temporarily locking them is necessary. This could be achieved by inserting a locking pin (not shown), through the side support member 3 or 8 into the roller 1 or 7.

Claims (6)
