Abstract
Water is treated with a sterilising agent and a colouring agent and then passed through a filter (26) which removes, among other matter, both of these agents from the water. Any coloration in the filtered water is an indication that the filter is beginning to fail and requires replacement. <IMAGE>
Description
TREATMENT OF POTABLE WATER
This invention relates to treatment of water to ensure potability.
Chlorine is the most widely used agent for destroying harmful micro-organisms in drinking water. The general public can buy agents for dissolving in suspect water and some of these are compounds which produce chlorine when dissolved in water. It is desirable to remove the agent, or at least a substantial part of it, once the micro-organisms have been destroyed, because most agents, including chlorine, are poisons when taken in substantial ' quantities. This is achieved by filtration using a carbon filter.
The filters have to be replaced at intervals and it is difficult to determine when a filter is no longer performing effectively. The failure of a filter is usually noticed by the taste of chlorine in the filtered water.
The present invention provides a method, apparatus and a treatment pack for treating water to ensure potability which overcomes this problem.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a method of treating water to ensure potability, comprising dissolving a sterilising agent in the water and filtering the water to remove the sterilising agent, wherein a colour indicator is dissolved in the water prior to filtration and is filtered out of the water in the filtration step.
The colouration in the water, therefore, produced by the indicator, will be removed by the filtration step providing an indication that the filter is operating effectively. Conversely, if the filtered water has some colouration, this is an indication that the filter is no longer operating effectively and requires replacement.
The indicator must itself be harmless in small quantities and potassium permanganate is the preferred indicator This compound provides a high colouration for a small amount of the compound and an indication of failure of the filter is provided at an early stage. In addition, potassium permanganate in itself has a sterilising function.
It is preferred that the sterilising agent is chlorine or a compound which releases chlorine when dissolved in water.
The inventon may reside in a treatment pack for use in treating water to ensure potability, the pack comprising a sterilising agent for dissolving in the water, a colour indicator for dissolving in the water and a filter for filtering out the sterilising agent and the colour indicator.
The invention may reside in a treatment pack for use in treating water to ensure potability, comprising a chlorine solution or a compound which produces chlorine when dissolved in the water, potassium permanganate and a carbon filter for filtering chlorine and potassium permanganate from the water.
The invention additionally resides in apparatus for use in treatment of water to ensure potability, comprising first container for receiving the water, a sterilising agent for dissolving in the water in the first container, a colour indicator for dissolving in the water in the first container, a second container, a perforate filter support associated with the second container, and a filter for use with the filter support for filtering out the sterilising agent and the colour indicator when the water is poured from the first container through the filter into the second container.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 shows an apparatus according to the invention for treating water with a bottle for receiving the treated water; and
Figure 2 shows thes same apparatus together with a beaker for receiving the treated water.
Referring to Figure 1, the bottle 11 shown defines a collecting container having a neck 12 defining a mouth 13.
A filter chamber 15 is provided having an open upper end 16. The opposite, lower end has a central outlet aperture 17 in an end wall 18.
The filter chamber is carried by a mounting device 20 having a dish portion 21 receiving said end wall 18 and having an aperture 22 aligned with the aperture 17 in the end wall. A plurality of elongate fingers 25 surround the apertures and project to the opposite side of the device rom the filter chamber. These fingers 25 engage in the neck 12 of the bottle 11 to ' located the mounting device so that the filter chamber is supported on the bottle.
The filter chamber contains a filter comprising carbon granules 26 located between porous supports 27, 28, e.g. of synthetic sponge. The filter is protected by a perforated disc 29 laid on top of the filter in the chamber 15.
In use, water having dissolved therein the sterilising agent and the indicator is poured into the open end 16 of the filter chamber and collects (30) on top of the perforated disc. The water seeps through the filter and is collected in the bottle 11. In passing through the filter, both the sterilising agent and the indicator are removed from the water.
The treated water may, alternatively, be collected in a beaker 10 (Figure 2). The mounting device 20 has a peripheral flange 23 with a downturned lip 24. The flange may seat on the rim of the beaker with the lip engaged around the rim to locate the filter chamber 15 on the beaker.
