Abstract
In a method and kit for producing paintings, the outline of a selected subject is effected using a soluble or fugitive ink whereby the outline is substantially dissolved when contacted by a paint so as to remove any trace of the assistance afforded by the outline to produce the finished painting.
Description
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING PAINTINGS
This invention relates to method and apparatus for producing paintings which involve the production of an outline of a chosen subject which can be followed by an amateur painter or child so as to achieve an acceptable final painting.
Such do-it-yourself paintings are already available and these take two forms. The first is that known as "Painting by Numbers" in which a chosen subject is produced in outline with the various areas delineated being given a number, a key being provided so as to guide the user as to the colour which should be applied to a given numbered area. The second form of painting which is available is one in which the numbers are omitted so that a greater skill has to be exercised by the user in selecting the colours although the kit often comprises a print of the final picture so as to provide a general guide.
The disadvantage of these known paintings is that the outlines are produced using a permanent ink with the result that the outlines will show through the finished picture unless the paint, ink, crayon or other material used to effect the colouring is applied thickly enough to obliterate the outlines. However, a thick application of the colouring substance is not always -appropriate, especially when the user is attempting to achieve an acceptable final painting as opposed to a child who is perhaps using the kit merely as a toy.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage of known do-it-yourself type paintings.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of producing a blank for a painting comprising the step of printing an outline of a selected subject for the painting using a soluble or fugitive ink which in use is substantially dissolved when contacted by the paint employed to complete the painting.
Each area of the subject of the painting may be delineated by a single or double line. In the former case, the finished painting will not have any of the outline remaining, provided the paint has been applied so as to contact all of the outline although, depending on the colour and thickness of application, the dissolved outline may alter the colour of the paint acting as the solvent but this produces a very pleasing effect. If a double outline is used and, as is intended, paint is applied upto the outlines so as to disolve the same, then the various areas of the subject are separated by a thin line of the colour of the basic material on which the outline is printed and again, this gives an aesthetically pleasing effect.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a painting kit comprising a sheet of material on which is printed an outline of a selected subject for the painting, the outline being printed using a soluble or fugitive ink which in use is substantially dissolved when contacted by the paint used to complete the painting.
The outline may be provided using a single or double line so as to vary the effect of the finished painting.
The term "paint" as used throughout this specification is intended to cover any substance having a liquid component such as to act as a solvent for a soluble or fugitive ink. Whilst the invention has been conceived primarily in connection with watercolour paintings, it is possible to use acrylic paints, paints or crayons which are washed with water after application and even oil paints although the normal thickness of application of the latter is such as to obliterate any outline so that the main advantage of the present invention is best realised using what might be termed generally "water-based paints'1. It will be understood that a "fugitive" ink is an ink which is water based.
Thus, the step of printing the outline of the selected subject needs to involve a dry process such as the letterpress process or the dry offset printing process.
One example of carrying out the present invention is to take a sheet of material which is compatible with a water-based paint, such as 1401b Bockingford paper, and to print thereon the outline of a selected subject which may be effected either by a series of single lines or a series of double lines. The colour of the ink is preferably light and it has been found that a bronze type colour is suitable in as much as it provides a clear outline on a white background, for example, to be followed by the user and yet does not alter materially the colour of the-paint when contacted, and thus dissolved, thereby. Any variation in colour is, as already mentioned, such that it provides a pleasing effect to the finished painting. If a series of single lines are employed, it will be appreciated that it is necessary to allow drying of one colour before an adjacent colour is applied if normal liquid watercolour or other paints are employed. However, this is not necessary if a double line outline is employed. It will be appreciated that a combination of single and double outline could be used to good effect. It will also be appreciated that the basic painting can form part of a kit which may additionally include a selection of appropriate paints and brushes as well as a print of the finished painting using the colours provided so as to guide the user. However, it is open for the user to use his or her discretion in completing the painting as to precise colours and type of paints.
The invention provides the opportunity to effect a painting using watercolour paints or the like and being guided by an outline which is not visible in the finished painting however light in colour or thinly applied the paint is.
Claims (13)
1. A method of producing a blank for a painting comprising the step of printing on a base material an outline of a selected subject for painting using a soluble or fugitive ink which is substantially dissolved when contacted by the paint employed to complete the painting.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the printing step comprises printing the outline of the selected subject using a single line to delineate adjacent areas.
3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the printing step comprises printing the outline of the selected subject using a double line to delineate adjacent areas, whereby the various areas of the subject are, in the completed painting, separated by a relatively thin line of the colour of the base material.
4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the printing step comprises printing the outline of the selected subject using a single line to delineate certain adjacent areas and a double line to delineate other adjacent areas.
5. A method according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the printing step is carried out using the letter press process or the dry offset printing process.
6. A painting kit comprising a sheet of material on which is printed an outline of a selected subject for the painting, the outline being printed using a soluble or fugitive ink which in use is substantially dissolved when contacted by the paint used to complete the painting.
7. A painting kit according to claim 6, wherein adjacent areas of the selected subject are delineated by a single line.
