Abstract

An artists board (1) for a picture or design representing a stained glass window comprises a stiff base sheet (2) to which a metallic finish sheet is applied. The metallic surface may be treated with a clear varnish, lacquer or plastic to maintain its lustre. The surface is then printed with guide-lines to represent a design 5 dividing it into discrete portions 6 for chosen colouring by spirit or water based coloured inks. The printed lines may be thick black lines to represent the lead strips of stained glass work, or thin, broken for the user to cover with suitable thick dense black lines. Translucent ink applied permits the lustre of the metallic surface to shine through, and where the metallic surface is left bare it can represent clear glass if the surface is silvery such as by using an aluminium foil. The board may be part of a kit including a range of boards bearing different designs and pens or brushes for applying the translucent inks. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in artists materials This invention concerns improvements in artists materials, and is particularly applicable to materials used for producing a picture or design.
According to this invention, I provide a board having a metallic finish on one surface, printing of lines depicting the framework of a picture or design on said one surface and enclosing discrete portions, the material being adapted in use to have translucent coloured inks applied to selected discrete portions so that the lustre of the metallic finish shows through and the lines isolate different colours and portions.
With the invented board, the picture or design is preferably constructed to represent a stained glass effect after the coloured translucent inks have been applied.
The lines printed on the metallic finish may be black and of sufficient density and thickness to represent the lead strips used in stained glass windows, panels or lights. However, it is envisaged that the lines printed can be of an ink contrasting with the metallic finish so that in use the user may apply black ink to a thickness and/or density to his own taste. In this alternative, the lines may be thin or broken or dashed so as just to give a guide to the user.
Preferably, the board according to this invention forms part of a kit including a plurality of translucent coloured inks for use with the board and the particular picture or design. A set of different boards might be packed with a plurality of such inks and a dense black ink and a suitable brush or brushes. The translucent coloured inks and the black ink may be incorporated in suitable fibre or felt tipped pens.
Instructions for the use of the board might be included, and for simple designs or pictures suitable for beginners, suggestions for colouring can be given.
The board may comprise a paper or card backing to which a layer of metallic foil is bonded or adhesively secured. The metallic foil may be treated by a coating to avoid tarnishing. Conveniently, aluminium foil can be employed, and this gives a silver lustre, which if left unpainted by the translucent ink, gives the impression of clear glass. However, other effects can be obtained by metallic finishes which are not silver, for instance gold or bronze. These finishes can be obtained by using foils of the appropriate metal.
It is possible to obtain metallic finishes which are not of metal, these are plastics especially treated. Additionally, aluminium foil can be dyed or otherwise treated by varnishes or lacquers to give an impression of bronze, gold etc.
Such finishes are only suitable if the translucent ink, usually a spirit or water based ink, can be applied and adhere thereto.
The kit of parts may include a frame for mounting the finished design or picture.
In order that this invention be appreciated, reference will now be made to an exemplary embodiment depicted in the accompanying drawing wherein: Figure 1 is a plan view of a board; and Figure 2 is a schematic section of part of the board.
With reference to the drawing, a board 1 is of square or rectangular shape. The board 1 is laminated and comprises a base board 2 of thick or stiff card and bonded to this is a sheet of material 3 having a metallic finish.
The sheet 3 may be a metal foil such as aluminium.
The metallic surface of the sheet 3 is coated with a transparent layer 4 which may be a plastics, varnish or lacquer. This layer has a surface to which spirit or water based inks can adhere, but serves to preserve the lustre of the metallic surface.
The face of the board is printed with a design 5 designated by lines of thick dense black printing defining a design in the manner of a stained glass panel with the lines representing the lead strips which would surround the discrete portions of different colour glass.
The lines separate discrete areas 6 on the board face for selected colouring by the user with inks that are translucent to permit the metallic lustre to show through the colour.
Some areas may be left uncoloured to represent clear glass.
In Fig. 1, the selected areas 6 are schematically designated by shading to represent the areas to be coloured to the same hue or shade. In practice the board may have a key or footnote with suitable guidance for colouring, or the user may select his own colours.
As will be appreciated, the lines need not be thick and dense but could be printed in thin, shadow or broken form for the user to paint over with dense black to a suitable thickness.
Preferably, a plurality of boards, each with a different design, are comprised in a kit of parts including translucent inks which may be applied by a brush or felt or fibre tipped pen.
As suitable, the kit may include dense black ink and this may be applied by a brush or a fibre or felt tipped pen. The kit may include directions for the user.
Additionally, mounted materials or a frame may be provided in the kit as well.
The designs may be graded in difficulty, or put up by subject or theme, or may be of educational value, such as maps.
Various metallic finishes may be provided in different colours and/or sheen or lustrous finishes.

Claims (8)

1. An artists material for producing a picture or design comprising a board having a metallic finish on one surface, printing of lines depicting the framework of a picture or design on said one surface and enclosing discrete portions, the material being adapted in use to have translucent coloured inks applied to selected discrete portions so that the lustre of the metallic finish shows through and the line isolate different colours and portions.
2. A board according to claim 1 wherein the lines printed are black and of sufficient density and thickness to represent lead strips as used in stained glass windows, panels or lights.
3. A board according to claim 1 wherein the lines printed are guide lines of thin, shadow or broken form so arranged that the user may cover the guide lines with thick dense black ink to represent lead strips as used in stained glass windows, panels or lights.
4. A board according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the board comprises a paper or card backing to which a layer of metallic foil is bonded or adhesively secured.
5. A board according to claim 4 wherein the metallic foil surface to have the translucent ink applied thereto is treated with a transparent coating of lacquer, varnish or plastic to maintain the lustre of the metallic surface.
6. A board according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein the metallic foil is aluminium.
7. An artists material for producing a picture or design comprising a board substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
8. A kit of parts for making a picture or design representing a stained glass window, panel or light, the kit comprising a board according to any one of the preceding claims, translucent ink for applying to discrete portions of the board, brush or pen for applying the translucent ink, and directions for the user.
