Abstract

A fire or heat protective light transmitting hood may be of heat resisting transparent plastics film having a first layer of tin oxide applied directly to the film, a part light-transmitting, part light-reflecting coating of metal e.g. silver applied to the tin oxide layer by the metal sputtering technique and a further layer of tin oxide applied to the silver layer.

Description

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION Title: "Fire or heat-protective mask" THIS INVENTION relates to a fire or heat-protective, light-transmitting mask or hood and it is an object of the invention to provide an improved mask or hood of this kind.
Our co-pending Patent Application No. 8623936 discloses a fire and heat-protective, light-transmitting mask in the form of a bag of heatresisting transparent plastics film rendered part light-transmitting/part light-reflecting by the application of a metallic coating applied by the metallic sputtering technique.
Whilst that hood has proved effective, it has been discovered that the effectiveness of such a protective hood can be substantially improved by adopting the measures of the present invention.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a fire or heat-protective, light-transmitting mask or hood, incorporating a transparent material provided with at least one part light-transmissive, part reflective metallic coating and at least one coating of tin oxide.
A particularly effective embodiment of the invention has been found to result if a first layer of tin oxide is applied directly to the transparent material, a coating of silver is then applied to the tin oxide layer by the metal sputtering technique and a further layer of tin oxide is applied to the silver layer, the silver layer being so applied, by said sputtering technique, that, in a manner known per se, the layer is part light-transmissive and part light-reflective.
It will be appreciated that other combinations of tin oxide/sputtered metallic layers and/or additional tin oxide/sputtered metallic layers may be applied within the scope of the invention.
It will be appreciated that the transparent base layer need not be of flexible plastics film but may be, for example, of rigid plastics, glass or other transparent ceramic or crystalline material.
