Abstract

Hand-held drills are generally equipped with an auxiliary handle, having a clamp-ring (1) with a radially projecting hand-grip (3). In order that the auxiliary handle need not be removed from the drill every time it is clamped in a stationary position, the invention provides for an extra support (4) projecting radially from the clamp-ring (1). The extra support (4) terminates in a round insertion plug (5), whose external diameter is substantially equal to the internal diameter of the clamp-ring and whose length is substantially between a quarter and a hart of its external diameter. <IMAGE>

Description

An auxiliary handle for a hand-held drill The present invention relates to an auxiliary handle which can be fixed to the neck of a hand-held drill, in particular a "do-it-yourself" hand-drill, and which has a clamp-ring with a hand-grip projecting radially from it.
An auxiliary handle of this sort permits the accurate orientation of the hand-drill when hand-held. The auxiliary handle has however to be removed if the drill is to be clamped in a drill-stand, as for example described in German Patent Specification DE-PS 22 23 182, or in a mounting at the side of the workbench, as for example described in German Patent Specification DE-PS 28 21 132.
The object of the invention is to provide a universally usable auxiliary handle which can remain on the drill when it is clamped in a stationary position.
An auxiliary handle according to the invention comprises a clamp-ring, a hand-grip projecting radially from the clamp-ring, and an extra support projecting radially from the clamp-ring and terminating in a round insertion plug whose external diameter is substantially equal to the internal diameter of the clamp-ring and whose length is substantially between a quarter and a half of its external diameter.
Preferably, the hand-grip and the extra support are positioned diametrically opposite one another on the clampring.
Such an auxiliary handle can be used in the normal way to guide the hand-drill when hand-held. Additionally, if the hand-drill is to be clamped in a staionary position, the auxiliary handle is inserted and mounted (using the insertion plug provided, whose external diameter is the standard diameter of 43 mm,) in the similarly standardised clamp-ring of a drill-stand or a holder at the side of the work bench.
In this way the time-consuming removal of the auxiliary handle is avoided. Moreover, the auxiliary handle avoids the need for a separate hand-drill holder, as is usually required for clamping a drill using an adjustable clamp mounting at the side of the workbench.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the clampring, the extra support with the insertion plug and a core of the hand-grip are made in one piece, from metal, and a plastic covering is applied to the core.
To help understanding of the invention, a specific embodiment thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows an auxiliary handle of the invention viewed from above, and Figure 2 shows the auxiliary handle viewed from the side.
The auxiliary handle has a clamp-ring 1 with a slit, which can be pushed on to the neck of a drill and secured there by means of a screw 2. On one side a hand-grip 3 projects radially from the clamp-ring. Diametrically opposite, an extra support 4 projects from the clamp-ring 1.
The extra support 4 terminates in an insertion plug 5, whose external diameter is approximately equal to the internal diameter of the clamp-ring 1 and whose length is approximately half of its exterior diameter.
The hand-grip 3 consists of a cylindrical core 6 with a plastic cover 7. The core 6 is fixed to a hand protection collar 8, which in turn in the embodiment shown is connected to the metal clamp-ring 1 via two webs 9, 10.
In Figure 2 a drill 11 with a clamping neck 12 is indicated in chain-dotted lines.

Claims
1. An auxiliary handle, which can be fixed to the neck of a hand-held drill, the handle comprising a clampring, a hand-grip projecting radially from the clamp-ring, and an extra support projecting radially from the clamp-ring and terminating in a round insertion plug whose external diameter is substantially equal to the internal diameter of the clamp-ring and whose length is substantially between a quarter and a half of its external diameter.
2. An auxiliary handle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hand-grip and the extra support are positioned diametrically opposite one another on the clamp-ring.
3. An auxiliary handle as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the clamp-ring, the extra support with the insertion plug, and a core of the hand-grip are made from metal in one piece, and there is a plastic cover over the core.
4. An auxiliary handle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
