Description

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION Improvements in or relating to a drinking vessel THE PRESENT INVENTION relates to a drinking vessel and more particularly relates to a drinking vessel intended to be filled with an alcoholic beverage.
At the present point in time, alcoholic beveridges are widely sold in public houses throughout the country. People often visit these public houses, travelling by car.
Legislation exists which makes it an offence to drive a motor car if the alcohol in the bloodstream exceeds a predetermined limit, and there is considerable pressure being applied to drivers not to drink and then drive.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a drinking vessel for containing an alcoholic beveridge, said vessel being provided with a marking thereon in the form of directions as to how to summon a taxi.
Preferably said marking comprises the telephone number of a taxi operator.
Conveniently the marking includes an exhortation not to drink and drive.
Preferably the marking is formed on the base of the vessel and is visible when a beveridge dispensed in the vessel has been drunk.
Preferably the vessel comprises an additional marking on the side of the vessel, the said additional marking comprising an exhortation not to drink and drive. The marking on the side of the vessel may include an invitation to look at the said marking providing instructions on how to summon a taxi, and the marking on the side of the vessel may include an indication that the marking has been placed thereby, or with the authority of, the police force or some other official body. Thus the marking comprises the shield or coat of arms of said police force or other official body.
The drinking vessel may be in the form of a glass, such as a beer glass, a beer tankard, a wine glass, or a spirit glass.
Preferably the or each marking is applied to the glass in the form of a transfer or decalcomania.
Alternatively the or marking is cut, engraved or etched in the drinking vessel.
The invention also relates to a drinking vessel containing a alcoholic beveridge, the drinking vessel being a drinking vessel according to any one of claims to The invention also relates to a method of supplying alcoholic beveridge to a consumer together with an indication as how to summon a taxi, said method comprising the steps of dispensing alcoholic beveridge into a drinking vessel according to said one aspect, and passing the drinking vessel to said consumer.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a side view of a beer glass in accordance with the invention, and FIGURE 2 is a top plan view of the glass of Figure 1.
Figure 1 illustrates a beer glass 1 of substantially conventional design.
The glass carries, on one side wall thereof, a marking. The marking may consist of the official shield or crest 2 of the local police force, or some other official body. Thus this crest or shield may be the crest or shield of the local county council or some other official body.
The marking on the side of the glass may also include an exhortation 3 trying to encourage people not to drink and drive. Additionally the marking on the glass will contain an invitation for a person to look at another marking present in the bottom of the glass.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the glass, when empty, clearly showing a marking present on the bottom of the glass. The marking on the bottom of the glass may comprise an exhortation not to drink and drive, and includes directions 6 as to how to obtain a taxi. These directions may include a telephone number 7 of a taxi operator.
It is envisaged that a glass, as described above, may be utilised in a public house. The glass will, of course, be filled with an alcoholic beverage, such as beer or lager. The person to whom the glass is handed will read the marking on the side of the glass and, when the glass is empty, will read the marking on the bottom of the glass. Thus, it is hoped, if the person utilising the glass has consumed sufficient alcohol to impair their driving ability in any way, they will take a responsible course of action and arrange to be taken home by the taxi.
Whilst the invention has been described with reference to specific markings, it is to be appreciated that the markings may be modified and editorially changed without departing from the scope of the invention. The markings may be present on the glass either in the form of ' applied markings, such as transfers or decalcomania.- The marking, may, of course, be engraved, etched or cut into the glass or may even be moulded into the glass when the glass is actually manufactured.
Whilst the invention has been described with particular reference to a beer glass it is to be understood that the invention may be applied to many different types of drinking vessel such as a beer tankard, a wine glass, or a spirits glass.
Whilst the described embodiments of the invention comprise transparent glasses, it is to be understood that the invention may also be applied to drinking vessels which are not transparent.
