Abstract

A container has a main wall (1) provided with an inner flange (3) supporting a mouth-defining rim (4). A lid has a skirt (11) which snap engages in plug-fitting manner in the rim. The lid has an outwardly directed radial flange (12), which projects over the top of the rim (4). The flange extends so as to seat on the tops of both the rim and the main wall to spread the load on the main wall when full containers are stacked. Rigidity of the assembled structure is provided by annular ribs (13, 15). The flange may be provided with cut-outs (17) at spaced intervals to allow insertion of a tool to lever the lid off. <IMAGE>

Description

CONTAINER AND LID ASSEMBLY The present invention relates to a container and lid assembly, for example of the type often used for paint.
Traditionally, paint containers have been made of sheet metal formed into a cylinder and sealed at one end by a disc of metal. Recently, injection-moulded plastics containers have been made instead. The overall shape of the containers, however, has usually been very similar to the more traditional sheet metal type of container. GB A-2 168 960 discloses an assembly of container and lid in which in injection moulded lid is plug-fitted into the mouth of the container, the mouth being defined by an axially-extending rim joined to the main cylindrical wall of the container by a radially-extending flange. The lid and con-tainer of GB-A-2 168.960 may be made by injection moulding techniques and have been found to be satisfactory in use.However, in transit from the paint manufacturer to the consumer and in storage at the manufacturer, the wholesaler and retailer, paint containers of this type are frequently stacked manp deep upon one another. It has been found that some injection moulded containers of this general type have been distorted in an undesirable way, when the containers are stacked in this matter.
The present invention is intended to provide an improved container which is better suited. to being stacked with other similar containers.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a container and lid assembly wherein the container has a main peripheral wall provided with an inwardly directed flange ad a rim spaced from said wall by the flange, to define a channel between the top of the main peripheral wall and the rim, the rim defining a mouth, and the lid comprising a skirt plug-engageable in the rim to close the container, and a peripheral flange directed outwardly from the rim to an extent sufficient to seat on both the top of the rim and the top of the main peripheral wall.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a section through a portion of the periphery of a lid and container assembly, in accordance with the invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view from above and to the side of the lid and container assembly of Figure 1.
The assembly shown includes an injection-moulded plastics container having a cylindrical wall 1 sealed at its bottom end (not shown). Adjacent the opposite open end 2 of the container, an integral inner rlange 3 extends radially inwardly and terminates in an integral rim 4 which extends axially from the free end of the inner flange 3, terminating at its upper end in the same diametral plane as the top of the wall 1. The lower end of the rim 4 is provided with a radially inwardly extending bulge 5 which is adapted to engage a complementary curved portion 6 of a lid 7, with the latter plug-fitted in the rim.
As is best seen in Figure 2, the lid 7, which is an injection moulding, comprises a central disc portion 8, having at its periphery a U-shaped annular portion 9 defining a groove 10, the outer limb of the U constituting a skirt 11 which has, on the radially outer face thereof, the curved portion 6 which engages with the bulge 5 of the rim 4. This U-shaped portion 9 provides resilience for snap-engagement of the skirt in the rim.
The skirt 11 extends generally upwardly, as seen in Figure 1 (i.e. axially outwardly from the interior of the container) and merges into a radial outwardly extending flange 12 which extends over the top of the rim 4. The outwardly extending flange 12 is provided with a first axially inwardly extending annular rib 13 which is located, when the lid 7 is engaged with the container, adj-acent and radially outwardly of the rim 4. The outer flange 12 extends over the top of the main wall 1 and adjacent the inside face of the wall 1, the outer flange is provided with a second axially inwardly extending annular rib 15.
Referring again to Figure 2, gaps 16 are provided in the outer circumference of the extension 14 of the lid 7, these gaps extending radially inwardly from the free outer edge of the outer flange 12 to a point depicted with a dotted line 17 in Figure 1. The purpose of these gaps is to allow the blade of a screwdriver or other convenient tool to be inserted through the gap 16 into a drip channel defined by the container wall 1, tie flange 3 and the rim 4, in order for the lid 7 to be levered off and away from the container.
When the containers and their lids are stacked on top of each other, full -of paint, a considerable weight is placed on the lower containers in the stack, which has been found to cause the walls 1 of some prior art containers to distort. This may interfere with the proper fit of the lids in the containers and, in extreme cases, the walls may break. in the container and lid assembly shown, this is prevented by the support given by the flange of the lid, which spreads the load. In the embodiment shown, contact of the flange on the top of the wall 1 together with the abutment of the second annular rib 15 on the inside of the wall rigidifies the assembly.
The first annular rib 13 provides additional rigidity of the assembly.
As a secondary advantage, the. outer flange 12 serves to keep the drip channel free of debris so that when, as is common, the container is stored in a dirty environment such as the corner of a garage or garden shed, the channel does not accumulate debris which may, when the lid is removed, find its way into the container or onto a paint brush.

Claims (8)

1. A container and lid assembly wherein the container has a main peripheral wall provided with an inwardly directed flange and a rim spaced from said wall by the flange, to define a channel between the top of the main peripheral wall and the rim;the rim defining a mouth, and the lid comprising a skirt plug-engageable in the rim to close the container, and a peripheral flange directed outwardly from the rim to an extent sufficient to seat on both the top of the rim and the top of the main peripheral wall.
2. An assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the peripheral end wall of the outwardly directed flange is co-extensive with the outer surface of =he main peripheral wall.
3. An assembly according to Claim 1 or 2, including an annular projection on the outwardly directed flange defining a peripheral rebate which receives the top portion of the main peripheral wall.
4. An assembly according to Claim 3, including an additional annular projection spaced radially inwardly of the first-mentioned projection for engaging the outer peripheral wall of the rim.
5. An assembly according to any preceding claim, including complementary formations on the rim and the skirt for securing the lid in its engaged position on the container.
6. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein a gap is provided in the outwardly directed flange to allow a tool to be inserted therethrough in order to lever the lid off the container.
7. An assembly according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the lid is injection moulded of plastics material.
8. An assembly according to Claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
