Description
PAPER SHREDDING APPARATUS
This invention relates to paper shredding apparatus.
More specifically, this invention provides paper shredding apparatus comprising a first set of cutting discs mounted on a first shaft, a second set of cutting discs mounted on a second shaft, spacer means for spacing apart the cutting discs, and finger devices for extending between the cutting discs and for causing removal of shredded paper from between the cutting discs.
The paper shredding apparatus may include claw devices which are for dragging in crumpled paper to be shredded and which are mounted on the cutting discs.
The claw devices are preferably mounted in recesses provided on the periphery of the cutting discs.
The claw devices are also preferably interchangeably mounted on the cutting discs.
Preferably, the paper shredding apparatus is one in which the first shaft is mounted above the second shaft, and in which the first shaft is rotated faster than the second shaft during use of the paper shredding apparatus. This faster rotation of the first shaft greatly increases the cutting action of the cutting discs, and it also helps to push the cut paper away after cutting.
Also preferably, the paper shredding apparatus is one in which the first shaft is mounted above the second shaft, and in which the first shaft is set at a more forward angle to the bottom shaft. This allows the cut paper to reach the point where the cutting discs meet and cutting takes place. Also, the paper falls away and is removed more easily after being cut.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of first paper shredding apparatus in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a front view of the paper shredding apparatus;
Figure 3 is a partial front view showing parts of the paper shredding apparatus in detail;

Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side view of the apparatus as shown in
Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a side view of second paper shredding apparatus in accordance with the invention;
Figure 7 is a view from right to left as viewed in Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a top plan view of the paper shredding apparatus shown in Figure 6;
Figure 9 shows in more detail and in a different scale the drive shaft cutting heads shown in Figure 7; and
Figure 10 is an enlarged sectional view on the line
A - A shown in Figure 9.
Referring to Figures 1 to 5, there is shown paper shredding apparatus 2 comprising a first set of cutting discs 4 which are mounted on a first shaft 6. Only some of the cutting discs 4 are shown in Figures 3 and 4 for ease of illustration. The paper shredding apparatus 2 also comprises a second set of cutting discs 8 which are mounted on a second shaft 10.
The cutting discs 4 are spaced apart by spacer means in the form of spacer discs 12. The cutting discs 8 are similarly spaced apart by spacer means in the form of spacer discs 14.
The first shaft 6 is mounted above the second shaft 10. The second shaft 10 is driven via a drive sprocket 16 and the end of the second shaft 10 remote from the drive sprocket 16 is provided with a gear wheel 18. The gear wheel 18 engages with a gear wheel 20 on the first shaft 6. Thus rotation of the second shaft 10 causes the gear wheels 18,20 to rotate which in turn causes the first shaft 6 to rotate.
The cutting discs 4,8 on the shafts 6,10 are contra-rotating discs as can be seen from the arrows 22,24 which are shown in
Figure 5 and which illustrate the direction of rotation of the shafts 6,10.
The paper shredding apparatus 2 comprises finger devices 26,28 for extending between the cutting discs 4,8 as can best be seen from Figure 5, and for causing removal of shredded paper (not shown) from between the cutting discs 4,8.
The finger devices 26 are mounted on a finger bar 30. The finger devices 28 are mounted on a finger bar 32.
The paper shredding apparatus 2 includes side plates 34,36 and these side plates 34,36 are held together by tie bars 38,40 and associated nuts 42.
The cutting discs 4,8 run at different speeds, thus increasing shearing capacity. The paper shredding apparatus 2 includes interlocked safety guards 44. The cutting discs 4,8 are preferably hardened steel cutting discs. The first shaft 6 and the second shaft 10 are mounted as shown in
Figure 5 so that the first shaft 6 is set at a more forward angle to the second shaft 10. This allows all paper to reach the point where the cutting discs 4,8 meet and cutting takes place. Also, the cut and shredded paper falls away and is removed more easily after being cut.
The finger devices 26,28 facilitate the removal of the shredded paper from between the'cutting discs 4,8. The paper to be shredded is cut at the cutting discs 4,8 and it is forced through as the first shaft 6 and the second shaft 10 contra-rotate. As the cut material hits the finger devices 26,28 it in effect gets extruded out from between the cutting discs 4,8.
The paper shredding apparatus is such that the cutting discs 4,8 have recesses in the form of milled out slots (not shown) provided in their periphery. These recesses are for receiving claw devices 46 which are for dragging in crumpled paper to be shredded. The periphery of each cutting disc 4,8 may be provided with two radially extending tapped holes and the claw devices may be provided with two complementary drilled holes. Thus the claw devices may be screwed in position on the cutting devices 4,8. Such a method of mounting the claw devices enables them to be interchangeably mounted proud of the circumference of the cutting discs 4,8.
As shown in Figure 1, the paper shredding apparatus 2 has a feed section 48. This feed section 48 includes a heavy duty endless conveyor belt 50 for feeding the paper to be shredded to the cutting discs 4,8. The paper shredding apparatus 2 also includes a control box 52 having control buttons 54.
The entire paper shredding apparatus 2 may be constructed for heavy duty operation. Thus, for example, heavy duty sealed bearings requiring no maintenance may be employed for mounting the first shaft 6 and the second shaft 10. The shafts may be 100mm (4") in diameter to ensure that there is no distortion and side friction when they are under heavy load. The paper shredding apparatus 2 may be arranged to give a 2mm shred and it may be effective to shred up to 2 tons of paper per hour. The paper shredding apparatus 2 may be arranged to be electrically or hydraulically powered.
Referring now to Figures 6 to 10, there is shown second paper shredding apparatus 2. Similar parts as in the paper shredding apparatus 2 shown in Figures 1 to 5 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison, and their precise construction and operation will not again be given.
In the paper shredding apparatus 2 shown in Figure 6 to 10, it can be seen most clearly from Figure 10 that the finger devices 28 are curved and this is in contrast to the finger devices 28 shown in Figures 1 to 5 which are straight.
The finger devices 26 are similarly curved in the paper shredding apparatus 2 shown in Figures 6 to 10 as compared with straight finger devices 26 used in the apparatus shown in Figures 1 to 5.
Figure 10 also illustrates a preferred construction for the cutting discs 8. The cutting discs 4 are similarly constructed. More precisely, the cutting discs 8 have a separate cutter 56 secured in a recessed portion 58 of the periphery 60 of the cutter disc 8 by means of screw bolts 64. The periphery 60 of the cutting disc 8 has a knurled surface. As can also be seen from Figure 10, the fingers 28 are secured to mounting blocks 66 by screw bolts 68. The mounting blocks 66 fit over the finger bar 32.
Figures 6 and 7 show most clearly how the first and second shafts 6,10 are driven by an electric motor 70 which drives a pulley 72. The pulley 72 in turn drives an endless belt 74 and the belt 74 drives a pulley 76.
Figure 8 shows how the paper shredding apparatus 2 is protected by a side guard 78, a feed skirt 80 and a drive guard 82. The direction of feed of the paper to be shredded is shown in Figure 8 by the arrow 84. It will thus be seen that the paper to be shredded passes over a roller bar 86.
The roller bar supports the endless conveyor belt 50 which forms part of the feed section 48.
Figure 6 also shows a bed frame 88 for the paper shredding apparatus 2. The bed frame 88 supports as shown side plates 90 and joint plates 92.
The cutting discs 4 shown at the top of Figure 7 are shown in more detail in a different scale in Figure 9. The cutting discs 4.form part of a cutter head. The cutting discs 4 and the spacer discs 12are held in position on the first shaft 6 by means of lock nuts 94. The cutting discs 8 and the spacer discs 14 are similarly held in position on the second shaft 10. The first shaft 6 is shown in Figure 9 rotating in a bearing 96 in a bearing housing 98. The drive shaft 6 is shown provided with the drive gear wheel 20.
Locating pins 100 pass through apertures in the side plate 90 as shown in Figure 9. These locating pins 100 are held in position by screw bolts 102 passing through a head part 104 of the locating pins 100. As shown, the screw bolts 102 pass into screw threaded apertures 106 in the side plate 90. Tie bars 108 extend between the side plates 90.
Although reference has been made above to the shredding of paper, it will be appreciated that it is intended that all types of paper can be shredded including thick and thin papers, cardboard and other paper materials. Also, if desired, other types of materials can be shredded.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the shape of the finger devices 26 28 and the shape of the spacer discs 12,14 may be varied. Preferably, the cutting discs 4,8 are 8" in diameter but this size may be varied.
Also, preferably, there are thirty cutting discs 4 and thirty cutting discs 8 but this number may also be varied.
The cutting discs 4,8 and the spacer discs 12,14 will usually be keyed on to the shafts 6,10 but other means of mounting the cutting discs 4,8 and the spacer discs 12,14 may be employed. Advantageously, the claw devices 46 are made of tool steel but other materials may be employed.
