Patent Application No.8619581; Figure 6 is a section on the lines 6 - 6 on
Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a plan view of the chamber sho#n in
Figure 5;
Figure 8 is an underplan view of the chamber of
Figure 5 with an outer sleeve of tne chamber removed; and
Figure 9 is an elevation view of the chamber with the sleeve removed.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings there is shown a water treatment device comprising a lower container in the form of a jug 10 which is of genrally rectangular form as view in plan witit a smoothly rounded corners and is formed in hard transparent plastics. The jug has a spout 11 formed in one corner thereof and a handle 12 is moulded integrally with the opposite corner of the jug and is provided with a coloured plastics trim 13.
An upper container 14 of similar shape in plan to the jug 10 is located on top of the jug, the underisde of the container 14 having a seat 15 which bears on the upper peripheral edge of the jug. The container 14 is formed with an obliquely downwardly extending cover plate 16 for the open top of the spout il of the jug. At the opposite side of the container, the container wall is formed with an upwardly inclined. dresser member 17 having side cheeks 18.The presser member 17 has a spaced pair of lugs indicated in dotted outline at 19 which engage the upper edge of the jug to provide a pivot point for the upper container 14 with respect to the jug to enable the container to be held horizontal by pressing the member 17 when the jug is tilted downwardly to discharge the contents frown the spout 11 as descirbed later.
The container 14 has a bottom wall 20 which has 2n integral closed well 21 extending from the lower end thereof down into the jug 10. The well will be described in greater detail with reference to
Figures 2 to 4. The well 21 has a recess indicated at 22 between its upper end and the bottom wall 20 of the container, the recess having an upwardly facing shoulder 23 and a convergent side wall 24. A chamber
25 is mounted in the well and contains a water treatment agent. For example the water treatment agent may comprise three components, namely activated carbon, and anionic exchange resin and a cationic exchange resin.The anionic resin may be in the form of a strong base resin in a carbonate form such as 'Purolite A 4i0" and the cat ionic exchange resin may be a hydrogen exchange resin such as Purolite C 100
H. Typically, the components may be in the proportion
of li grammes of activated carbon to 30 grammes of
Purolite C 100 H to 40 grammes of Purolite A 450. The upper end of the chamber has an out-turned rim 26
formed with an outwardly and upwardly extending
annular flange 27 which is dimensioned to lodge in
the convergent wall 24 to hold the rim 26 well above
the shoulder 23 at the bottom of the recess as can be
seen in Figure 2.
The chamber 25 has a cap 29 having a centre 30 and peripheral rine 31 joined together by an upper set of radial ribs 3 spaced apart from one another and a correspondinn lower set of radial ribs 33 disposed opposite the gaps between the upper ribs to form @arrow slots between the respective upper and lower ribs through which water may pass from the upper container into the chamber 25. The lower end of the chamber 25 which is spaced above the bottom of the pli 21 has a nrid formed integrally therein compr-sin.g a first set of ralleI ribs 3A extending across the chamber botton spaced apart from one another n supported by a small number of transversely extending members 35. Below the ribs 34 is a second set of ribs 36 which extends parallel to the first ribs and below the gaps between the first ribs form narrow slots between the upper and lower ribs through which water can percolate whilst providing adequate structure for supporting the water treatment agent in the chamber 25. Water can thus pass through the chamber flowing over the water treatment agent and thence issue from the bottom end of the chamber.Theouter diameterof the chamber is somewhat smaller than the inner diameter of the well to provide an annular passage 37 extending from the bottom of the chamber upto the top of the well the top of the passage is closed by the engagement of the flange 27 at the top of the chamber with the convergent side wall 24 of the well. The step 23 adjacent the top of the well is formed with a plurality of elongate part annular slots 38 to permit water flowing to the top of the passage to flow into the lower jug 10 to provide a supply of treated water in the lower jug.
The upper container is closed by a lid 40 which fits around the periphery of the container and is formed with a raised central knob to facilitate removal of the lid.
In use the upper container is filled with water to be treated and placed on the jug. The water slowly passes from the container into and through the water treatment chamber and thence from the lower end thereof up round the chamber and through the slots in the step adjacent the top of the well and into the jug.When sufficient water has accumulated in the jg, the device is lifted by the handle and as the jug is tilted downardly to pour water fron the spout, the presser member of the container is pressed downwardly to maintain the upper container horitontally to prevent water from being inadvertently discharged from the upper container.When the required amount of water has been discharged from the jug, the jug is turned upright and treated water can continue to flow from the upper end of the well into the jug to replenish the water held in the jug. As and when required, further water can be added to the upper container.It will be understood that since the outlets adjacent the upper end of the well into the lower container are located adjacent the upper end of the chamber, water will be retained in the well to keep the water treatment agent in the chamber immersed.
It will be appreciated that tne constituents of the water treatment chamber can be varied to suit the water to be treated and to remove impurities required. Tne water treatment agent described specifically above removes nitrates and removes chlorides whilst allowing some minerals to remain and at the same time increases the carbon-dioxide content and acidity of the water. If other contents such as the minerals in the water are to be removed, the water treatment agent is varied accordingly.
Figures 5 to 9 illustrate a modified form of the chamber 5 containing a water purification agent to be locales in the wall 21 of the water treatment device described an il'astrated in Figures 1 to 4.
In that ewaodiment the outer diameter of the chamber 25 is somew@at less than the inner diameter of the well 21 to create an annular passage 37 between the chamber wall an side of the well through which water exiting from tne bottom of the chamber can pass up around tne chamber and thence to tne outlet 38 adjacent tne tor of tne well to flow into the jug 10 of tne device. In accordance witn the present embodimen#. the chamber wall 25 is formed with a vertical c#arne:i DO extending down the outer side of the wall from a location close to the top of the chamber to tne bottom of the chamber. The chamber is received in a thin walled cup shaped housing 51 having a side wall wnich tapers slightly towards its lower end to provide a jamming fit with the outer wall of the chamber 25. The housing is closed at its lower end by a bottom wall 52 which is spaced from the grid 34/35/36 at the bottom of the chamber 25 to povide a cavity 53 to receive treated water from the lower end or tne chamber. Tne upper end of the side wall of the housing 51 terminates short of the upper end of the chamber and below the upper end of the channel 50 in the side wall of the chamber to provide an opening 55 at the upper end of the channel. Thus water collecting in a cavity 53 at the bottom end of the chamber can flow upwardly through the passage 54 and exit through the aperture 55 and thence flow through the apertures 38 in step 23 at the top of the wall and pass into the jug of the water treatment device as previously described. The external dimensioning of the housing 51 for the chamber may be such tnat the housing is an interference fit in the well to prevent water flowing between the outer side of the housing and the wall of the well and accumulating at the bottom of the well beneath the base of the housing.
