Abstract
A revolving door 1 provides a sealable access through a doorway 2 and comprises door leaves 4 rotatably mounted about a common axis. Two part cylindrical screens 7 are mounted coaxially with the leaves. The screens are moveable above the axis between an open position in which opposing openings 8, 9 (Fig. 1) are formed between the screens permitting access through the door by rotation of the leaves and a closed position (Fig. 2) in which the screens are engaged in edge contact to provide a continuous part cylindrical barrier sealing the doorway against access. The screens are supported on wheeled runners (18, Fig. 5 not shown) engaging an overhanging rail (17) incorporated in a roof structure (16). The screens are guided at their lower edges (21) by part circular guide rails (22) received in a groove (23) along the lower edge (21) of each screen. The revolving door is lockable whilst avoiding the need for double skinned screens having fixed and moveable panels. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Revolving door
This invention relates to revolving doors and in particular to a revolving door providing a sealable access through a doorway.
It is known for revolving doors to comprise a plurality of leaves which extend radially from and are rotatably mounted about a common vertical axis. A cylindrical structure surrounds the leaves and includes opposing openings for entry and exit such that access through the doorway requires entry through one of the openings into a space between adjacent leaves, which leaves may then be rotated to bring the space into registration with the second opening permitting exit from the revolving door.
It is also known to provide the cylindrical structure with sliding portions which may be brought together to seal one or other of the openings. A disadvantage of such known arrangements is that the structure is double skinned at least in part and includes means for providing relative movement between fixed and moveable panels.
According to the present invention there is disclosed a revolving door for use in providing a sealable access through a doorway comprising a plurality of door leaves rotatably mounted for rotation about a common axis, two screens each of part cylindrical shape mounted coaxially with the leaves such that the leaves are a close fit within the screens and means for selectively rotating the screens about the axis between an open position in the opposing openings are formed between the screens permitting access through the door by the rotation of the leaves and a closed position in which the screens are engaged in edge contact to provide a continuous part cylindrical barrier sealing the doorway against access.
An advantage of such an arrangement is that the screens comprise a part cylindrical structure which is single skinned which is therefore simpler and cheaper to produce than the hitherto known double skinned arrangements.
A particular embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is a schematic plan view of a revolving door in accordance with the present invention and in the open condition,
Figure 2 is a similar view of the door of Fig.
1 in the closed position,
Figure 3 is a perspective front view of the door of Figs. 1 and 2 in the open position,
Figure 4 is a similar view of the door of Fig.
3 in the closed position, and
Figure 5 is an elevation of the screens of the door of Figs. 1 to 4 showing the way in which a screen is supported beneath wheeled runners.
Fig. 1 shows a revolving door 1 providing a sealable access through a doorway 2 in a wall 3 and comprises four leaves 4 which extend radially from and are rotatable about a common vertical axis 5. The leaves 4 are each mounted on a central pillar 6 which is rotatable about the axis 5.
Screens 7 form a part cylindrical structure within which the leaves 4 are rotatable, the screens each comprising part cylindrical panels which describe an arc of 90 when viewed in sectional profile as in Fig. 5. Fig. 1 shows the door 1 in the open condition in which the screens 7 are separated from one another and each screen extends symmetrically on either side of the wall 3 so that openings 8 and 9 are formed between opposing vertical edges 10 and 11 and edged 12 and 13 respectively.
The openings 8 and 9 in the cylindrical structure formed by screens 7 provide access to the space 14 between adjacent leaves 4 and by rotation of the leaves the space may be brought into registration with the opposite opening so that a person may thereby obtain access through the doorway 2. The axis 5 is located centrally in the doorway 2 and in line with the wall 3.
Fig. 2 shows the door 1 of Fig. 1 in its closed position in which the screens 7 are moved into contact between edges 10 and 11 so that a semi cylindrical barrier comprising the screens 7 is thereby formed to seal the doorway 2. In this closed position the screens 7 are both entirely disposed on one side of the wall 3 which in use with an outside wall would preferably be arranged such that the screens lie on the outer side of the wall such that access to the leaves 4 is possible only from inside the building.
Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 are perspective views of the door in its open and closed conditions respectively.
The screens 7 are guided and supported by means of wheeled runners 18 engaging an overhanging rail 17 incorporated in a roof structure 16 as seen in Fig. 5. The roof structure 16 is circular in plan view and is supported on six circumferentially spaced pillars 19 external to the screens 7. Brush seals 20 are provided to protect the wheeled runners against the ingress of dust. The screens 7 are guided at their lower edges 21 by means of a part circular guide rail 22 mounted on the floor and received in a groove 23 along the lower edge 21 of each screen 7.
A lock (not shown) is provided for locking the screens 7 in the closed position and comprises a conventional lock of the type used for recuring sliding doors. The lock may alternatively be incorporated in the guide rail 22 or may be of the type engaging a recess in the floor.
The screens 7 may conveniently include panels of glass or other transparent materials.
The leaves 4 may also be mechanically driven by a drive means (not shown) providing continuous rotational movement and means may also be provided for accelerating the movement in reponse to the detection of a pedestrian seeking to gain access through the doorway 2.
Other arrangements are possible in which the axis 5 is offset to one side of the wall in which case the screen may be of other than 900 arc, the arrangement being such that a continuous barrier is formed in the closed position.
