Abstract

A wind or water powered rotor has an output shaft 'A' which is driven by sails 'D',E mounted on a shaft B so as to able to rotate in a reciprocal manner about an axis perpendicular to shaft 'A' and when shaft 'A' is mounted vertical can be driven by wind or water from any direction. The sails D and E are angularly orientated relative to each other on the shaft B. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Reciprocal rotary sail This device is suitable for being powered by wind or water and both are refered to as Flow.
Consists of Shaft 'A' through which Shaft 'B' is mounted Perpendicular.
Shaft 'B' is able to rotate through angle 'C'.
Sails 'D' and 'E' are attached to either end of Shaft 'B' as shown in the diagram. Fig. 2 shows veiw of Fig. 1 from direction of Flow.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Sail 'D' presents greater surface area to Flow than Sail 'E' and will cause Shaft 'A' to rotate in direction indicated. When Shaft 'A' has rotated sufficiently The Flow acts upon the reverse sides of Sails 'D' and 'E' and causes Shaft 'B' to rotate through angle 'C'. At this stage the Sails are again in position shown in Fig. 1 and 2 but with sail 'E' in position of sail 'D' and vice versa. The previous cycle of events are repeated.
Several sails may be used to turn Shaft 'A' either by using additional perpendicular shafts or by linking sails on opposing sides of Shaft 'A' so as to act in a simular manner as previously described.
RECIPROCAL ROTARY SAIL 1. A wind or water powered machine comprising a rotatable shaft upon which are mounted sails that are able to rotate about perpendicular axes. Sails on opposite sides of output shaft are mechanically linked and are able to rotate about their axes in a reciprocal manner.
2. A wind or water powered machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein sails on opposite sides of output shaft are mounted on common shaft(s) perpendicular to output shaft so as to work as a pair.
3. A wind or water powered machine substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
