Abstract

A multi-purpose moulded plastics container has a removable air-tight lid (2) which seats onto an annular seat (5) proximate the upper edge (9) thereof. A removable liner (4), for example a bag of the type in which sliced bread is sold, can be secured to the container by folding the open end over the upper edge (9) of the container. A carrying strap (3) is provided. The container may conveniently be used by a dog owner for the temporary storage and removal of faeces. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Sealed container This invention relates to the carriage or storage of substances in such a manner that those substances may be contained in a sealed container without coming into direct contact with the container body.
Accordingly, substances which might have a contaminating effect on the container body, or which emit an obnoxious odour may be carried or stored in a safe, hygienic manner.
Alternatively, substances may be carried or stored in the container such that they are protected from external conditions such as damp, dust or gases.
According to this invention the container comprises a bin having a rim or lip round its top edge over which the open end of a flexible bin liner may be folded in the form of a hem in such a way that the top edge of the liner is securely retained, and the interior of the bin is totally covered by the liner. Additionally, a second rim of greater peripheral length than the first-mentioned rim is located below the first-mentioned rim at a sufficient distance to allow room for the hem of the folded bin liner. A lid having slightly tapering sides can thus be pushed over the lower rim such that an air-tight or liquid-tight seal is formed, whilst effectively avoiding any tight contact with the liner.
The container is preferably provided with means for attaching a strap to enable the said container to be carried either by hand or slung over the shoulder. Preferably the strap passes through the slots disposed one either side of the lid in such a way that the lid is retained by the strap even when the lid has been removed from the container, thus preventing the lid from being mislaid. Preferably both the container and the lid arse provided with handles whereby each may be gripped, thereby facilitating removal and replacement of the lid. Preferably the container is tapered, such that the open end is larger than the base, so allowing containers to be stacked one inside the other for bulk storage or transit.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container fitted with a lid and carrying strap.
Figure 2 is a view corresponding to the section 'X-X' indicated on Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a view corresponding to the section 'Y-Y' indicated on Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a container 1 complete with lid 2 and carrying strap 3.
Also shown is a slot 10 in the carrying strap.
This slot is typical of a series of slots which are located at regular intervals to enable the effective length of the strap to be altered.
Section 'X-X' is shown on Fig. 2, in which is shown the detailed construction of the container 1 and the lid 2. Section Y-Y' is shown on Fig. 3, in which further constructional details are shown.
Positioned inside the container 1 is a flexible lining bag 4, the open end of which is folded back over the upper rim 9 of the container in the manner shown. Below this folded-back position of the bag 4, the container 1 has a lower rim 5 of greater peripheral length than the upper rim 9. Thus, when the lid 2 is pressed down over the open end of the container, the tapered sides of the lid will make an air or water tight sealed joint between the sides of the lid 2 and the lower rim 5, whilst maintaining sufficient clearance with the upper rim 9 as to prevent the sides of the lid from chafing on the folded-over portion of the lining bag 4.
The lid 2 has two tabs 6 located opposite each other, and in which are slots 7 of sufficient length and width to allow the carrying strap 3 to pass through freely.
On the body of the container 1 two lobes 11 are located opposite each other and slightly below the lower rim 5. These lobes allow the container body to be gripped with the fingers of one hand whilst a handle 12 located on top of the lid 2 allows the lid to be gripped with the other hand, so facilitating removal of the lid from the container. Located one on the centre line of each lobe 11 are two studs 8, to which the carrying strap 3 may be attatched by engaging it with the slots 10.
In the embodiment shown, the container 1 and lid 2 are moulded in plastic material. The lining bag 4 is of thin, flexible plastic and in embodiment shown the dimensions of the container are such that a discarded slicedbread wrapper may be used as a lining bag.
All other numbered items are moulded as integral parts of the component of which they form part. Thus items 5, 8, 9, and 11 are an integral part of the container moulding 1.
Items 6 and 7 are an integral part of the lid moulding 2. Item 10 is an integral part of the strap 3.
1. A container having an air-tight lid, means for securing a removable flexible liner within the container, and carrying means comprising a hand or shoulder strap.
2. A container as claimed in Claim 1 in which the lid includes a downwardly-depending annular flange which seats on an annular seat of the container proximate a top edge thereof, the linear being arranged to be folded over the top edge so that, with the lid and liner in place, the edge of the liner is received within an annular space, above the seat, between the flange and the container wall.
