Abstract

Thermoplastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is injected around the rim (16) of the transparent cover (14) of the lamp (10). By this means, the previous separate installation part (sealing ring) becomes unnecessary and adaptation problems during the assembly of the direction indicator lamp or the headlamp unit do not arise. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Lamp for motor vehicles State of the art The invention concerns a motor vehicle lamp of the generic type of Claim 1. A lamp of this type, whose casings are thermally welded to the transparent cover and form a peripheral groove, is known from German Utility Model DE-GM 7616,812; the ring element (piping), manufactured from rubber, is inserted in this groove and is in contact with the neighbouring region of the vehicle bodywork and the lens of the headlamp unit. A disadvantage of this ring element is that it has to be manufactured separately, stored and made available for the assembly of the unit.
Advantages of the Invention Using the motor vehicle lamp according to the invention, the problem presented in the previously mentioned state of the art is solved in a technically simple manner and absolute sealing between the lens and the casing is achieved.
Advantageous extensions to the invention are described in the sub-claims. Claim 2 indicates a material which, from the multiplicity on offer for this sealing element, is easy to process, on the one hand, and has the necessary resistance to temperature, on the other. By means of Claim 3, secure anchoring of the sealing element at the edge of the transparent cover is achieved. By means of Claim 4 and by means of Claim 5, sealing also occurs when the distance between the surfaces to be contacted is not constant.
Drawing An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and is explained in more detail in the description of the figure. The single figure shows, as an excerpt from a headlamp unit for motor vehicles, the left-hand direction indicator lamp in horizontal section and at full size.
Description of the Embodiment A left-hand headlamp unit for passenger cars has a direction indicator lamp 10 with a casing 11 in whose rear wall 12 is inserted a bulb 13 (in a manner not shown) and a transparent cover 14 manufactured from plastic and havng an optical region 15 and a peripheral rim 16. The rim 16 has a groove (endless), again peripheral, whose inner groove flank 17 and outer groove flank 18 are parts of ring protrusions 19 and 20, respectively.
The cross-section of both protrusions is triangular and both groove flanks 17, 18 point towards the casing 11.
A ring-shaped (endless) sealing element 21 of the thermoplastic polymer PVC (polyvinyl chloride) with a short-term temperature resistance of 110"C is irremovably fixed to the rim 16 of the transparent cover 14 by injection around the rim 16. By this means, the external ring protrusion 20 engages by means of the outer groove flank 18 in a notch 22 of the sealing element 21 and the inner surface 23 of the sealing element 21 is in contact with the inner groove flank 17.
The rear wall 12, a side wall 24 and a bottom wall 25 (and the top wall located above the plane of the drawing) have a ringshaped flange 26 which has substantially the same configuration as the sealing element 21 and the rim 16 of the transparent cover 14.
Adjacent to the transparent cover 14, there is a lens 27 of the headlamp (not shown) with its front pane 28 and base 29. Adjacent to the bottom wall 25, the top wall (not visible) and the rear wall 12 of the casing 11, there is an angular element 30 of the vehicle bodywork 31.
The region 32 on the sealing element 21, which is in contact with the flange 26 of the casing 11, with the base 29 of the lens 27 and with the angular element 30 of the bodywork 31, is convex, i.e. it has a crowned shape; the crowning of the sealing element 21 permits large-area contact with the neighbouring section even when the distance between them is not uniform.
1. A lamp for a motor vehicle comprising a casing with a transparent cover and a bulb, and a ring-shaped sealing element fixed between the casing and the transparent cover, characterised by the fixing of the sealing element takes place by injection around the rim of the transparent cover.
2. A lamp according to claim 1, characterised by the sealing element fixed by injection moulding to the rim of the transparent cover consists of an elastomer and/or thermoplastic, in particular of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with a short-term temperature resistance of at least 1 1 OC.
3. A lamp according to claim 2, characterised by the rim of the transparent cover has a groove whose two groove flanks point towards the casing, the outer groove flank engages in a notch of the sealing element, and the inner surface of the sealing element is in contact with the inner groove flank.
4. A lamp according to claim 2 or claim 3, characterised by the region of the sealing element in contact with the casing is shaped convex (crowned).
5. A lamp according to claim 4 which, as the front direction indicator lamp, is part of a headlamp unit with a headlamp lens adjacent to the transparent cover, characterised by the region of the sealing element in contact with the lends and/or with the bodywork of the motor vehicle is shaped convex (crowned).
