Abstract

The head and neck support comprises an inflatable head supporting part (10), an inflatable neck supporting part (11), a flap (16) for releasably attaching the neck supporting part to the head supporting part, and elasticated straps (23, 24) for releasably and adjustably attaching the support to a seat, chair or the like. The two parts (10 and 11) are independently inflatable to a required pressure. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Head and neck support This invention relates to a head and neck support and has as its object the provision of a head and neck support in a convenient form.
According to the invention there is provided a head and neck support comprising an inflatable head supporting part, an inflatable neck supporting part, first means for releasably attaching the neck supporting part to the head supporting part, and second means for releasably attaching the head and neck supporting parts to a seat, chair or the like.
Preferred and/or optional features of the invention are set forth in claims 2-6.
Such a head and neck support is portable and is particularly useful when on outings or camping.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front perspective view of one embodiment of a head and neck support according to the invention, with a part of the head supporting part broken away, Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the head and neck support of Fig. 1 and Figure 3 shows two head and neck supports attached to respective seats.
Referring to the drawings, the head and neck support shown therein comprises an inflatable pillow-shaped head supporting part 10 and an inflatable bolster-shaped neck supporting part 11. The head and neck supporting parts 10 and 11 comprise inflatable rubber inner members 12a and 12b, respectively, and removable outer covers 13a and 13b, respectively, made of elasticated knitted fabric which stretches as the inner member is inflated and contracts as the inner member is deflated.
Each inflatable inner member 12a,12b has at one end a mouthpiece 14 by which the inner member can be inflated, each mouthpiece being provided with an associated stopper 15. The mouthpiece 14 is constructed so as to hold the inner and cover members of a respective head or neck supporting part 10, 11 together when in use. To this end the mouthpiece may have a relatively thick wall with a circumferential groove (not shown) therein. A marginal edge portion, which surrounds an aperture in the cover member, is then located in this groove.
A flap 16 is attached at one end to the front of the outer cover 13b of the neck supporting part 11 and is releasably connected to the front of the head supporting part 10 by complementary VELCRO fasteners 17 and 18 on the other end of the flap 16 and on the outer cover 13a of the head supporting part 10, respectively.
Elasticated straps 23 and 24, which are preferably covered with a stretchable fabric, are passed through loops 19 and 20, (see full lines in Fig. 2 and 3) or loops 21 and 22 (see broken lines in Fig. 2 and 3), on the head and neck supporting parts 10 and 11, respectively, in order to releasably attach the support to the back of a chair or seat, e.g. a car seat 27 (Fig. 3), in an easily adjustable manner. The two ends of each strap also have complementary VELCRO fasteners 25 and 26 to connect the ends together.
The two parts 10 and 11 can be inflated independently to any desired pressure and can be deflated and folded for ease of storage.
Moreover, the two parts 10 and 11 can be separated by unfastening the VELCRO fasteners 17 and 18 for use individually.
As shown in Fig. 3, the support can be attached to a car seat and adjusted to suit an individual user. In this application the support will serve to prevent whiplash in an accident.
The support could, however, be used on any suitable seat or chair to make the user more comfortable.
A bag may be provided for stowing the support when deflated and the support may be supplied with a spare set of washable cover parts 13a, 13b.
The above embodiment is given by way of example and modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.

2. The support accordipg to claim 1, wherein the head and neck supporting parts each comprise an inflatable rubber inner member inside an expandible fabric cover member.
3. The support according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the first means comprises a flap attached at one end to one of the head and neck supporting parts and releasably attachable at an opposite end to the other of the head and neck supporting parts by VELCRO fasteners.
4. The support according to anyone of the preceding claims, wherein said second means comprises straps attached to the head and neck supporting parts by loops on the head and neck supporting parts.
5. The support of claim 4, wherein the straps are elasticated.
