Abstract

The nappy of the present invention consists of an outer body portion (1) adapted to fit around the body of a baby and provided with a fastening means (8) whereby the outer body portion (1) can be fastened in place around the body of the baby, and an inner flap portion (2) which is secured to the outer body portion (1) and which forms a region of increased absorbancy within the nappy. The portions (1, 2) can be made of terry cloth. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Nappy This invention relates to a nappy, in particular to a preformed reuseable nappy.
Babies nappies are a well known form of keeping a baby dry, clean and comfortable.
They are presently available in predominantly two well established forms. One form is the synthetic disposable nappy secured in place using two sticky flaps and the other a square of terry towelling cloth suitably folded and secured by use of a safety pin, and believed to be the more comfortable of the two. Disposable nappies are relatively expensive, and the sticky tape flaps are rendered ineffective should cream or powder come in contact with them. They are not as absorbent as towelling nappies. Towelling squares would be used far more if it were not for the disadvantage of having to fold the nappy and secure it in place by passing a sharp pin through several layers of towelling, an operation not entirely without risk when dealing with wriggling babies. Leakage can also occur around the loose fitting legs.
According to the present invention, there is provided a nappy comprising an outer body portion adapted to fit around the body of a baby and provided with fastening means whereby it can be fastened in place around the body of the baby, and an inner flap portion which is secured to the outer body portion and which in use forms a region of increased absorbancy within the nappy.
Preferably, the outer body portion is of a generally rectangular shape, the corners thereof optionally being rounded. Preferably, opposite sides of the generally rectangular shaped outer body portion have arcuate indentations that in use fit around the legs of the baby.
Preferably, the inner flap portion is of a generally rectangular shape, the corners thereof optionally being rounded. Preferably, the inner flap portion is secured to the outer body portion along one edge only (of the inner flap portion).
Preferably, the fastening means comprises at least one first portion comprising a plurality of hooks and at least one second portion comprising a material adapted to receive and releasably retain the hooks of the first portion.
Preferably, the first portion is in the form of a strip fixed to the outer body portion, and the second portion is in the form of a pad fixed to the outer body portion. Preferably, the strip comprises in addition to the plurality of hooks, a material adapted to receive and releasably retain said hooks.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is a view from one side, of a nappy of the invention, with the inner flap portion folded; Figure 2 is a view from the same side, of the nappy of Fig. 1, with the inner flap portion extended; Figure 3 is a view from the other side, of the nappy of Fig. 1, with the inner flap portion folded; Figure 4 is a view from the other side, of the nappy of Fig. 1, with the inner flap portion extended; and Figures 5 and 6 are each views of the nappy of Fig. 1, when positioned on a baby.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, the nappy consists of an outer body portion and an inner flap (or gusset) portion 2, each made predominantly or exclusively of terry cloth or other suitable absorbent material, the outer body portion 1 having a hem 3 extending around it and the inner flap portion 2 having a hem 4 extending around it.
The inner flap portion 2 is stitched to the outer body portion 1 along only one edge (of the inner flap portion 2), i.e. along the righthand edge 5 as indicated in Fig. 2 whereby the inner flap portion 2 can be folded along the fold line 6, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the left-hand side of the inner flap portion can be tucked underneath the right-hand side of the inner flap portion 2. This inner flap portion 2 affords greater comfort and padding, and an increased level of absorbancy. Also, the fact that the inner flap portion 2 is secured to the outer body portion 1 along only one edge ensures free movement of the inner body portion 2 during washing of the nappy, and hence through cleaning of the inner flap portion 2.
Each longitudinal edge of the outer body portion 1 has a generally arcuate portion 7, which portions 7 fit around the legs of the baby in use of the nappy. These portions 7 can be elasticated, for example by the provision of elastic within the hem.
The outer body portion 1 of the nappy is provided with two fastening strips 8 and with a generally-triangular shaped fastening pad 9, for fixing the nappy around a baby. The strips 8 each consist of a portion 10 consisting of a plurality of hooks and of a portion 11 consisting of a material adapted to receive and releasably retain the hooks of the portion 10.
Likewise the pad 9 consists of material adapted to receive and releasably retain the hooks of the portion 10. The portions 10 and 11 and the pad 11 can consist of the material commonly known as "Velcro'', thereby enabling the strips 8 to be quickly and easily fitted using gentle pressure.
In order to fit the nappy around a baby, the inner flap portion 2 is first folded as described above with reference to, and as shown in, Fig. 1. The nappy is then placed around the body of the baby, with the inner flap portion 2 inward, so that the two elasticated portions 7 fit around the legs of the baby. The portions 10 of the fastening strips 8 are then fastened to appropriate positions on the pad 9, depending upon the size of the baby. For instance, in the case of a small baby, the strips 8 can be positioned on the pad 9 as shown in Fig. 5, whereas, in the case of a large baby, the strips 8 can be positioned on the pad 9 as shown in Fig. 6. Thus, the shape of the pad 9 affords flexibility as to nappy size.
During washing of the nappy, the portion 10 of each strip 8 is fastened onto the portion 11 of the same strip 8 thereby to prevent the portions 10 from accidentally fastening onto the portion 11 or pad 9 of the same or other nappy.
In the Figure, the corners of the portions 1 and 2 are shown as being square. In practice, however, they are usually rounded. The same applies to the ends 12 of the arcuate portions 7.
