Abstract

A roofing eave piece comprises an apron 10 and an integral skirt 11 fitted with the apron lying under roofing felt at the eaves of the roof with the skirt depending into a rainwater gutter. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Roofing accessory This invention concerns a roofing accessory, and more particularly a part to direct water running downwardly over the roofing felt and beneath the tiles into a rainwater gutter secured to a fascia board at the eaves of the roof.
It is conventional practice to extend roofing felt outwardly beyond the lower edge of the tiling to form a flap which is tucked into the rainwater gutter. This ensures that water running downwardly over the felt and beneath the tiling is directed into the gutter. This practice has a number of disadvantages. Firstly if performed without proper care, the flap may be excessively large and seriously obstruct free flow of water along the gutter. Secondly and more importantly the flap is exposed to the elements and will deteriorate and disintegrate over a period necessitating costly repairs with a serious risk if they are not carried out in a timely manner of rot in the fascia board which if unattended may spread to other roof timbers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an accessory which overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional practice aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided an accessory for use in roof construction comprising an apron provided with an integral depending skirt along one of its edges all formed from a waterproof material which is resistant to weathering, the apron being adapted to lie under roofing felt at the eaves of a roof with the skirt positioned in a rainwater gutter.
The apron may be of elongated rectangularshape with the skirt along one of its longitudinally extending edges. The transversely extending edges of the apron and skirt may be provided with integral marginal flaps in superimposed relationship engageable with similar marginal flaps on like accessories so that an assembly thereof can be formed of required overall length.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, one form of accessory embodying the invention.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the accessory, Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the eaves of a tiled roof with the accessory in position, and Figure 3 shows a rear elevation of a plurality of the accessories joined to form an assembly.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the accessory comprises an apron 10 of elongated rectangular shape having a length of one metre or thereabouts. The apron 10 is integrally formed with a depending skirt 11 extending from one of its longitudinal edges.
The apron 10 and skirt 11 are also integrally formed with marginal flaps 12 and 13 along their two transverse edges respectively. The flaps 12 and 13 are in superimposed relationship with the apron, lying above and below the apron and skirt respectively whereby a plurality of like accessories may be interengaged to form an assembly thereof of desired length (as indicated in Fig. 3).
The accessory is formed from a waterproof material which is resistant to the weather including sunlight. Various plastics are suitable such as polypropylene or nylon for example.
Referring now to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that in use conventional roofing felt R is trimmed level with the edge of the bottom row of tiles T at the eaves of a roof. A plurality of the accessories are joined together by interengagement of their flaps 12 and 13 at adajcent edges to form an assembly extending over the length of the roof edge.
The aprons 10 are located beneath the felt R and over the rafters or spars S which carry battens B to locate the tiles T, with their skirts 11 extending downwardly over the fascia board F into the rainwater gutter G.
As best seen from Fig. 3 the lower edges of the skirts 11 may be trimmed to match the varying distance of gutter G from the upper edge of fascia board F provided to ensure proper fall to the downspouts.
If the apron 10 is of sufficient substance so-called under-eave tiling can be eliminated.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
1. An accessory when used in roof construction comprising an apron provided with an integral depending skirt along one of its edges all formed from a waterproof material which is resistant to weathering, the apron being adapted to lie under roofing felt at the eaves of a roof with the skirt positioned in a rainwater gutter.
2. An accessory according to Claim 1 wherein the apron is of elongated rectangular shape with the skirt along one of its longitudinally extending edges.
3. An accessory according to Claim 2 wherein the transversely extending edges of the apron and skirt are provided with integral marginal flaps in superimposed relationship therewith and lying above and below the apron at the opposite ends thereof respectively.
4. An accessory according to any preceding claim formed from a plastics material.
