Abstract
219,428. Morris Engines (Coventry), Ltd., Woollard, F. G., and Taylor, H. E. May 11, 1923. Combined turning, drilling, milling, and tapping machines; studs, inserting.-A machine for progressively machining articles such as crankcases, gear-boxes, axle-cases, &c.. necessitating a. succession of dissimilar operations comprises a wall or column &c., a number of machine heads such as milling, drilling, threading, and studding heads carried thereby, a platform extending from the wall provided with jigs &c. for the work and feed mechanism for each head controlled by individual cams mounted on the same shaft. Each machine head is provided with separate electrical driving means, and the shaft which controls the feed mechanism also controls travelling tables for conveying the work from head to head. The heads B, mounted on one or both sides of a wall A, are fed by cams E<2> on a common shaft E and are returned by pneumatic cylinders such as B<4> or bv double cams. Hand wheels such as B<5> may be provided for fine axial adjustment of the tools. The milling head B<x> is traversed horizontally by the spiral cam E<1> and guides B<6> are provided for the tools on two heads so as to engage locating means on the jigs and then return with the heads. The work-pieces D<3> are mounted in jigs carried by tables D adapted to slide along the platform C, and are returned either along the back of the wall or by means of vertically moving carriers C<3>, operated electrically or by pneumatic cylinders C<4>, and a return path C<2> provided with rollers C<6>. The tables may be traversed by hand or by pneumatic cylinders controlled from a multiple cam G. Cylinders D<4>, actuated mechanically, electrically, or pneumatically from the cam G are adapted to locate and lock the tables in their respective working pcsitions. The wall contains conduits for electric mains to supply the tool-head motors, a motor F for the cam-shaft, and a lighting system. The Provisional Specification states that a line-shaft for driving the tool-heads may be mounted or. or in the wall, and several structures may be arranged parallel to each other and back to back with passageways between. Cuttings, catching and removing.-An air blast may be provided at each work station to remove cuttings and a conduit for tool lubricant extends longitudinally through the wall. Cuttings and lubricant are collected in a channel A<2> and are there separated, the cuttings being removed by a conveyer A<4>.
