Abstract

A screwdriver is described which can accommodate alternative screwdriver shafts which respectively terminate in alternative screwdriver bits, these alternative screwdriver bits provide a means of using the tool with a variety of different screws. The screwdriver has a hollow handle 12 which allows these alternative shafts to be conveniently stored inside the handle itself. The screwdriver is provided with a slideable part 1 which moves inwardly and outwardly in response to a rotatable worm. The recess between the screwdriver body and the slideable part forms the profile of a nut. This allows the screwdriver to also function as an adjustable spanner. The profile of the head and slideable part together form a lever which can be used to exert extra torque on a screw. The screwdriver is therefore a single tool which can handle a variety of different screws and nuts. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A screwdriver At the present time, at least two separate tools are needed in a tool box for a person to have both plurality of screwdrivers and plurality of spanners for use with screws and nuts of various sizes.
According to this invention, there is provided a single tool consisting of a hollow operating handle, a shank extending from the op erating handle, connected to a head.
The head carries a moveable part.
The movable part has a serrated surface which is co-operable with a rotatable worm, which is located at the position within the head, the arrangement being such that rotation of the worm will drive the movable part in a predetermined direction.
The moveable part and the head together define an adjustable recess for accommodating the nut.
The profile of the head, preferably with the moveable part, is such that it defines a lever.
The lever can conveniently be used to apply extra torque to screws when needed.
The head has a recess in it co-axial with the hollow handle and at the opposite end of the head to the handle.
Into this recess can conveniently fit screwdriver shafts of any length, whilst being compatible with the recess diameter.
The configuration of the screwdriver blade at the end of any given screwdriver shaft can be varied. Variation can be in blade width, thickness and type.
The screwdriver shaft is fixed into the recess by means of a Joint. This Joint is conveniently a ball and socket joint. This enables different screwdriver shaft blades to be fixed into the recess. The shaft blade conveniently slides into the recess along- a keyway, the keyway being conveniently co-operable with a contour on the shaft blade.
The hollow handle is made in such a size that a variety of screwdriver shaft/blades can be stored conveniently in the handle. The handle is conveniently detachable from the head. Thus various-types of handles can be attached.
Thus the inventiop functions as both an adjustable screwdriver and an adjustable wrench, enabling a range of screws and nuts to be used with a single tool.
In order that the Invention may be more readily understood, and so that further features may be illustrated, the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to accompanying drawings in which: Figure -1 Is a cross section view, edge on, of the shank/head section of the tool.
Figure 2 Is an edge on view of the entire tool.
WITH RESPECT TO FIGURE 1 It can be seen that the shaded part of the head 2 is continuous with the shank 13.
A slideable member 1 is provided which is slideably mounted on the head 2. The member 1 has a face 3 which is opposed by the face 4, and, with the face 3, defines a nut receiving recess 5. The uppermost part of the member 1 is serrated 6 and a worm 7 engages the serrated portion of the member 1.
Thus rotation of the worm 7 causes the member 1 to move in and out and brings faces 3 and 4 closer together and further apart respectively. The worm 7 is held in position by a barrel spindle 16.
Also with respect to Fig. 1, it can be seen that the shaft 8 fits into the recess 10 of the head, in such a way as to be co-axial with the shank and handle.
It can further be seen that a ball and socket 11 joint is provided to secure that shaft 8 whilst enabling it to be removed conveniently to accommodate different shafts in the recess as required. It can also be seen that keyways 14 are conveniently provided in the face of the recess 10 and are conveniently co-operable with contours 15 on the shaft 8.
WITH RESPECT TO FIGURE 2 The handle 12 is hollow and can easily house a number of alternative screwdriver shaft blades.
The handle 12 and shank 13 and blade 9 are co-axial.
Also the head 2 and movable part 1 together form the profile of a lever.
1. A screwdriver comprising of a hollow operating handle, a shank extending from the operating handle, a head extending from the shank, a shaft which slots into a recess in the head, a shaft terminating in a bit defining a blade to be inserted into the slot formed in a screw.
The possibility of storing the shaft or indeed a series of shafts, terminating in a series of different bits, forming a series of different screwdriver blades respectively, inside the handle, is present.
Hence the tool provides a convenient means of storing several alternative screwdriver shafts in the hollow handle of the screwdriver.
2. A screwdriver comprising of a hollow operating handle, a shank extending from the operating handle, a head extending from the shank, a shaft which slots into a recess in the head, the shaft terminating in a bit defining a blade to be inserted into the slot formed in a screw.
A moveable part is slideably attached to the head which, together with the head, forms a recess which can accommodate a nut.
The tool is therefore both a screwdriver and a spanner.
