Description

1 GB2192959A 1
SPECIFICATION wheel hub; and,
Figure 2 is an equivalent partial sectional Wheel hub and drum brake assembly for view of a wheel hub and drum brake as vehicles sembly in accordance with the present inven 70 tion.
SPECIFICATION Referring first to Fig. 1, this shows an as
The present invention relates to wheel assem- sembly of a known brake comprising a wheel blies for industrial vehicles, and is particularly hub 1 carrying a flange 2 mounted for rotation concerned with the drum brakes used on such on an axle 3 by means of bearings 4 which vehicles, and especially on trailers of articu- 75 guide the wheel 5 for rotational and transla lated vehicles. tional movement.
The system of assembly used until now In its assembly, the flange 2 of the hub is comprises a flanged hub on which are fixed introduced from the inside into the drum 6 of the drum brake as one part and the wheel the brake and the trim 7 of the wheel 5 is trim as another part, the fixing being by 80 fixed to the drum and to the wheel hub flange means of bolts. by bolts 8, each of which has a fluted portion In the case of flanged wheels, whether they 9 adjacent to the head of the bolt which is a carry single tyres or twin tyres, the drum force fit in a corresponding hole in the flange brake is completely encircled by the rim and it 2.
for its part completely encircles the wheel hub 85 The rim 10 of the wheel 5 completely en body. circles the drum 6.
In trying to keep the weight down, the body The body 11 of the wheel hub is substan of the hub presents an important obstacle in tially cylindrical and the space available to ac that it limits the space available to iccommo- commodate the drum is defined by the gap date the drum brake whose diameter must be 90 between the wheel hub body 11 and the rim sufficient to enable the actuating cam of the 10.
brake shoes to be accommodated. The wheels are generally of a standard dia Because of this, the external peripheral meter, and of a sort in which this available shoulder which conveniently acts as a rein- space is strictly limited.
forcement for the drum is found immediately 95 The drum brake conventionally comprises an adjacent to the rim, and the heat generated on external radial shoulder 12 which acts as a braking and which accumulates in this shoul- reinforcing means around the periphery of the der is transmitted by convection to the rim aperture of the drum, and in which the heat and thus causes a rapid degradation of the generated by braking accumulates. By virtue of tyre. 100 the close proximity of the rim 10 to this It is an object of the present invention to shoulder 12, this frictional heat is transferred overcome these drawbacks. It is an object of by convection to the rim 10, and this results the invention to create a wheel hub and a in a rapid deterioration of the tyre.
drum brake assembly for vehicles having a Moreover, the actuating cam 13 of the brake drum encircling a wheel hub, in which 105 brake shoe 14 must be located in the space the wheel hub comprises a body borne on a between the wheel hub 1 and the friction sur shaft and having a flange portion, and the face of the drum 6.
body of the hub has an intermediate portion Referring now to Fig. 2, in this embodiment of reduced external diameter through which the body 21 of the flanged wheel hub 20, the radial median plane of the brake drum 110 mounted on an axle in a manner identical wi th passes. that shown in Fig. 1 by means of bearings Because of this exterior configuration of the 24, has an intermediate portion 25 of a dia body of the wheel hub, an actuating cam for a meter which is reduced in comparison with brake shoe, which is aligned with the radial that of the portions which encircle the bear- central plane of the axial friction surface of the 115 ings 24, the flange 22 being connected to the brake drum, can extend partially into the re- body 21 by a frusto-conical portion 26 which cess defined by said intermediate portion of diverges outwardly.
the wheel hub, in such a way that the cam The intermediate portion 25 of reduced dia can then approach the axis of the wheel axle, meter is centred on the radial median plane and also enabling te use of a drum which is 120 X-X of the internal friction surface of the of the smallest possible diameter for a given drum 27, and the actuating cam 28 of the vehicle. brake shoe 29, likewise positioned in the In order that the invention may be more same plane, extends partially into the recess fully understood, one presently preferred em- defined by this intermediate portion 25.
bodiment of assembly in accordance with the 125 It is thus possible, with a wheel of the invention will now be described by way of same diameter as that shown in the example example and with reference to the accom- of Fig. 1, to use a brake drum 27 having a panying drawings, in which: much smaller diameter. Then, the external re Figure 1 is a partial sectional view through a inforcing shoulder 30 is further away from the prior art assembly of brake mounted on a 130rim 31, and this considerably reduces the
2 GB2192959A 2 transfer of heat to the rim by convection.
It will also be appreciated that the brake assembly of the present invention permits the use of a wheel hub flange 22 having the smal- lest possible diameter outside the circle inscribed around the exterior of the bolts 32, subject to the need to provide the minimum amount of material necessary to avoid the flange breaking up when it is fitted in place and force is exerted on the bolts.
The brake assembly in accordance with the present invention also enables one to use a cam of greater diameter and/or to mount thicker fittings on the brake shoe 29, in other words to increase their useful life.

Claims (5)

1. A wheel hub and drum brake assembly for a vehicle, having a brake drum encircling a wheel hub, in which the wheel hub comprises a body borne on a shaft and having a flange portion, and the body of the hub has an intermediate portion of reduced external diameter through which the radial median plane of the brake drum passes.
2. An assembly as claimed in claim 1, in which an actuating cam for a brake shoe, which is aligned with the radial central plane of the axial friction surface of the brake drum, extends partially into the recess defined by said intermediate portion of the hub.
3. An assembly as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the hub has said flange portion connected to said intermediate portion by a frusto-conical portion which diverges outwardly of the assembly.
4. An assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, in which, for a given standard diameter of wheel, the diameter of the wheel hub flange portion is reduced, as is also the diameter of the brake drum.
5. A wheel hub and drum brake assembly, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig. 2 of the accompanying draw- ings.
