Abstract
A plug 10 to be releasably fitted into the erasure-tab recess of a cassette comprises a bung 14 of a resilient and/or elastomeric material dimensioned to form an interference fit with the internal walls of the recess and at least one tab 12, 16 connected to the bung for removing the plug from the recess. The tab 16 may be formed of a material different to that of the bung. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Plug for a video cassette
The present invention relates to a plug for a video cassette.
Video cassettes may be purchased in either pre-recorded or blank form. In the latter case, the cassette owner may at some stage make a recording on the tape which he wishes to protect against future accidental erasure. To allow for this possibility, the video cassette include a tab formed across a recess in one of the side edges of the cassette housing.
Video recorders include a sensing device for sensing the presence or absence of this tab, and if it is removed, the device prevents the video recorder from recording on the tape, thus protecting material already on it from accidental erasure. On pre-recorded cassettes, the tab is either removed before sale, or the cassette housing is initially produced without the tab.
However, after repeated viewings of a recording on the tape, the owner may become tired of it and wish to use the video cassette to record something fresh. However, if the tab has been removed, then this is not possible without first blocking off the recess to counteract the action of the sensing device. The problem therefore arises of how to carry out such blocking.
Commonly, this may be done by attaching sticky tape over the entrance of the recess to mimic the tab. Unfortunately, the sticky tape itself often gets pierced by accident, or by the sensing device in the video recorder. Consequently, a fresh piece of sticky tape is needed. Eventually, the cassette becomes tacky along one edge and is unpleasant to handle.
In addition, once the sticky tape is in place, it is difficult to peel off. If it is removed, then a sticky patch remains around the recess.
In one aspect, the present invention aims to provide a plug for releasably fitting into the recess to allow recording.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a plug adapted for releasable fitting into a recess in a video cassette.
The recess referred to above is that which is formed in the cassette housing to allow the video recorder to detect whether the recording on the tape is permitted.
Preferably, the plug is made of a resilient and/or elastomeric material, e.g. natural rubber.
Preferably, the plug is made in a moulding process such as a vacuum moulding process.
Preferably, the plug consists of a bung component and a tab component. The bung component is slightly larger in cross section than the recess and is thus prevented from falling out by means of an interference fit. The plugs may be moulded in a single step, or the two components may be formed separately and secured together in a subsequent step by suitable means such as adhesive.
In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate two perspective views of a plug according to a first aspect of the present invention; and
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate further perspective views of two further embodiments of the invention.
Turning firstly to Figures 1 and 2, these illustrate a first embodiment of the plug 10 of the present invention. The plug comprises a tab component 12 and a bung component 14.
The plug is made out of a resilient and/or elastomeric material such as natural rubber.
The bung component is made slightly larger than the recess into which it is to be fitted so that it is prevented from easily becoming detached from the recess by an interference fit.
The resiliency of the material allows it to deform sufficiently to permit its initial insertion into the recess. The tab allows the plug to be removed from the recess by pulling on the tab to pull the bung in turn from the recess. The material used for the plug should be sufficiently strong to prevent the tab from tearing away from the bung.
The plug is preferably moulded as an integral body in a process such as vacuum moulding. A suitable material for the plug is natural rubber as this has the required physical properties of resiliency as well as strength.
In order for the plug to fit into the recesses presently found in VHS video cassettes, the following are the preferred dimensions (+ 10%, preferably + 5%) of the plug:
a 1 Omm b 10.5mm
c 3mm
d 6.5mm e 16.5mm f 10.5mm g 6.3mm
h 10.5mm 10.Smm j 0.2mm
k 0.2mm
I 2.8mm
In use, the bung portion 14 of the plug is inserted into the recess in the video cassette.
The cassette can then be placed in a video recorder and a recording made on the cassette. Afterwards, the bung can either be left in place to allow the tape to be used for further recordings, or be removed to protect the recording made against accidental erasure.
The plug is removed by gripping the tab by e.g. fingers or a pair of tweezers and pulling it away from the cassette housing and thus in turn pulling the bung out of the recess.
Turning to Figure 3, this shows an embodiment of the invention having a bung portion
14 and two tab portions 12. Such an embodi ment is particularly useful when the tabs are made of very thin material which might break at the junction of the tab and bung. Thus even if one tab breaks off, the other one will remain.
The embodiment shown in Figure 4 illustrates a two-piece construction of the plug of the present invention. As previously described, a bung portion 14 is provided having a cuboid structure for fitting into the recess of a video cassette. A layer 16 of suitable flexible but strong material such as rubber or cloth is adhered to the top surface of the bung, to allow the plug to be removed from the recess.
In the embodiments described above, it is important that the material of the bung component 14 be resilient and/or elastomeric so that it can be retained in the recess without becoming loose. If a completely rigid material is used for the bung, then it may fall out and become lost.
Claims (4)
1. A plug to be removably fitted into the protecting recess of a cassette comprising a bung of a resilient and/or elastomeric material dimensioned to form an interference fit with the internal walls of the recess and at least one tab connected to the bung for removing the plug from the recess.
2. A plug according to Claim 1, wherein the tab is of a different material to the bung.
3. A plug according to Claim 1 or 2 which has only one tab.
4. A plug substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
