Abstract

A combination of a land vehicle and a source of power to provide a mobile source of power, wherein the land vehicle comprises an all terrain vehicle (1), and the source of power comprises a source of hydraulic and/or pneumatic power (2), carried by the all terrain vehicle (1). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A mobile source of power The present invention relates to a novel combination of a land vehicle and a source of. power to provide a mobile source of power.
Hydraulic and/or pneumatic sources of powerfor operating machinery or tools used in, for example, road working are known and may comprise an hydraulic and/or pneumatic power pack mounted to a trailerwhich is provided with means to enable the trailer carrying the power pack to be towed by a vehicle to the sitewhere the source of power is required.
A disadvantage of using a source of power towed by a vehicle is that road works are often carried out on very rough terrain over which it can be difficult and sometimes impossibleto tow the source of power due to the relatively free connection between the towing vehicle and the trailer. In fact if terrain is particularly bad the trailer may even tip over or become immovable.
According to the present invention there is provided a combination of a land vehicle and a source of power to provide a mobile source of power, wherein the land vehicle comprises an all terrain vehicle, as hereinafter described, and the source of power comprises a source of hydraulicand/or pneumatic power carried bythe all terrain vehicle.
All terrain vehicles are known which comprise a cycle or buggy type vehicle having three orfourwheels which provide high traction. Atypical example of thins type of vehicle is the Kawasaki KLF300. This comprises four wheels, a rear heel differential which can be switched in or outand has a very low centre of gravity which enables itto traverse rough terrain without toppling over. The term "all terrain vehicle" is generally understood, and is meantto refer throughout this specification to land vehicles ofthistype.
Previously, these all terrain vehicles have been used soleyforthe purpose oftransporting a rider and possibly a towed load between destinations and it has been suggested that they are ideal for: Farming - Particularly sheep and arable.
Groundsmen - Especially for golf courses.
Parks and Forestry - Also favoured by hunters.
Warehouses - Speed and mobility.
Leisure amongst other things. However, the all terrain vehicle has not been used as a workhorse for providing a mobile, indeed highly mobile, source of power.
Conveniently, the mobile source of power comprises an hydraulic and/or pneumatic power pack mounted on the rear of the vehicle. The power pack preferably comprises a B.H.T.M.A. type "D" hydraulicsystem providing a flow of 301 .p.m. - 138 bar (2000 p.s.i.) max pressure and the system may incorporate a flow divertervalve, a suction filter, full flow return line filterwith filter condition indicator and hydrauiic oil cooler, all of which features are well known in conventional hydraulic power systems. The power pack may be used to operate any hydraulic and/or pneumatically operated ancillary equipment ortools such aswater pumps, breakers, generators, pneumatic compressors and the like.
The power pack may be detachably mounted to the rear of the all terrain vehicle for ease of maintenance.
Preferably, the power pack is releasably secured to a heavy duty carrying rack provided on the all terrain vehicle.
Preferably, the mounting for the power pack on the all terrain vehicle comprises suspension means which serveto absorb vibrations and shocks between the all terrain vehicle and the power pack.
The power pack may comprise an electrical starter motor and this may be powered from the all terrain vehicles electrical system, or from a separate battery supply if need be.
Conveniently, the power pack is enclosed with a safetyframeto protect users of the combination according to the present invention. This safety frame may be detachable to facilitate servicing of the power pack and may also be covered with wire mesh to further reduce any hazard to users of the combination according to the present invention.
By carrying the source of hydraulic and/or pneumatic power on the all terrain vehicle the source of power in effect forms an integral part ofthe vehicle and the above described disadvantages associated with therelativelyfree connection between a vehicle and a towed trailer are avoided.
An embodiment ofthe present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a schematic view of a combination of an all terrain vehicle and a hydraulic and/or pneu- matic power pack in accordance with the present invention, and, Figure 2 shows a partial rear view of the combination of Figure 1 with the power pack shown in detail.
The drawings show a Kawasaki KLF 300 all terrain vehicle 1 carrying at its rear end a power source 2 in the form of a Stanley hydraulic power pack HP80. The power pack 2 is rigidly, but releasably mounted to a heavy duty carrying rack3 provided atthe rear of the vehicle 1 and is powered by a Kawasaki engine (notshown).
Between the carrying rack 3 and the power pack 2 rubber pads 4 are provided which absorb vibration and help reduce shocks to the power pack2 mounting as the vehicle 1 moves over rough terrain. In orderto protect users ofthe power pack a frameS is provided around it. The frame can be detached (to facilitate servicing) by pulling out pins 6.
The all terrain vehicle 1 is so constructed that it is able to travel over very rough terrain taking the power pack 2 with it to the required location where the power pack 2 can be connected to the appropriate machinery and tools.
As well as being suitable for use where road works are taking place the source of power can be used in connection with operations to be performed by, for example, snow ploughs and tipping trailers.
