Description
SPECIFICATION
Adjustable anchorage for rail track rails
My invention is a one-piece clip for anchoring heavy duty rail track rails, e.g. for large cranes as used in shipbuilding, steel making and so on.
The clip is a so-called "open clip" which allows the rail to "breathe through the clip", that is to say, to move vertically relative to the clip, the clip nevertheless being adjustable to locate the rail transversely during its installation and thereafter to secure the rail in the transverse direction.
Hitherto, such clips have not usually been in one piece. Also, they have relied for adjustment on the use of a cylindrical eccentric.
The adjustment afforded is thus non-uniform and limited in its mechanical advantage for a given adjustment range.
I provide a one piece, open clip for the purpose mentioned above which is rotatably adjustable about a bolt or stud used to secure the clip through an angle greater than 1800, uniformly to displace and position a rail during its installation.
The line of action of the clip on the rail is preferably such as to pass through the bolt or stud in all positions of adjustment of the clip. This substantially reduces the risk of loosening of the clip under the action of transverse loads on the rail.
In the drawing accompanying this description:
Figure 1 is a top view of my one piece clip;
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the clip;
Figure 3 shows the clip in use securing a rail; and
Figure 4 is a diagram.
In the drawing, Fig. 3 shows a sole plate 10 carrying a welded-on, externally screw threaded stud 11, the weld joint being indicated at 12. The sole plate supports the rail 13, possibly on a resilient pad (not shown). A spring washer 14 and nut 15 on the stud 11 tighten the clip 16 down onto the sole plate 10 to secure the clip against rotation, the body 20 of the clip abutting and transversely positioning the rail and taking the rail side loads which are transferred to the stud.
The clip body 20 has a top flange 22 shich overlies the rail flange 24 with a clearance to allow the rail to "breathe through the clip", the height of the clip body 20 being chosen to suit the thickness of the rail flange 24 and any resilient rail pad under the rail.
The clip has a through bore 26 to accommodate the stud, the bore 26 being bevelled at its lower end as at 28 to accept the stud weld 12.
The clip flange 22 is recessed as at 25 to receive the washer 14 and the flange carries a small upstanding leg 27 which allows a spanner applied to the nut 15 to be used flat on the top of the flange to lever the clip round to tighten or loosen the clip.
The clip body 20 has an outer, vertically disposed surface having flat surface portion 30 and a curved, cam surface portion 32 which turns through an angle A (see Fig. 4) of 300 about the axis of the bore 26.
Referring to Fig. 4, the cam surface is designed as follows:
dr
Cam formulae based on --=k
ds i.e. the radius falls constantly along the length of the curve.
Equation of curve=r
R2 0 =Rr - - R1 \R, A where r= radius (from centre to any point)
R1 outer circle
R2 inner circle 6 2 angle turned art any point A" total angle turned
The angle between the radius line at any point and the tangent line at that point is indeed constant, the formulae being
a tan-1 180 In (R1/R2) The complete curve s 1 (when A =6 ) has length
n::AR1 R2 S= -1 180 In (R2/R1) \ R1 The angle a =81.6 is chosen to be as large as possible and such that the radius line r lies as close as possible to the line of action of the clip on the rail so as to intersect the bore 26, and, therefore, the stud 11. This reduces, as far as possible, any tendency of the clip to rotate under the action of transverse forces on the rail.
The clip shown in the drawing is cast in one piece. The one piece clip enables the overall height of the bolt/stud and clip to be low. The clip is readily adjustable and provides for uniform rail adjustment at a good mechanical advantage. Since the rail breathes through the clip, excessive loads on the bolt or stud are avoided and its life expectancy is improved.
