Abstract

A pivoted double-glazed louvre blade 1,2 for louvre windows has thermoplastic flexible sealing membranes 5,6 extending from its lower and upper edges which seal against adjacent louvre blades in the closed position. The side edges of the double glazed blades are sealed by plugs containing dessicant material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to louvre windows This invention relates to louvre windows of the type where a plurality of louvre blades pivot between open and closed positions.
There is a requirement from architects, for thermal insulation purposes, that not only should such louvre blades be thermally-insulating but also that, in the closed position, adjacent blades should seal completely one against another. It is also highly desirable that the blades in the closed position should present a totally transparent or translucent surface both from inside and outside a building.
This invention seeks to provide a solution to the problems enumerated above.
In one aspect this invention consists in a pivotable louvre blade for use in louvre windows, the said blade being multiple glazed and having incorporated therein a flexible membrane at each edge which is to seal against another blade, which membrane is of resilient and flexible plastics material, so that it forms a seal with an adjacent blade when the blades are in a closed position.
Preferably the membrane is trapped between, and extends outwards from, two or more sheets of glazing material forming the louvre blade.
Preferably the sheets from which the louvre blade is formed are of identical section and have two bends therein.
Preferably the membrane is formed from a sheet of flexible thermoplastics material such as polyethylene or polypropylene.
Preferably the edges of the louvre blades at right angles to those carrying membranes are equipped with sealing plugs which serve to hermetically seal the spaces within the louvre blades.
Preferably the sealing plugs include a desiccant-containing space which communicates with the space within the louvre blade.
In another aspect the invention consists in an assembly of multiple-glazed louvre blades pivotably assembled in a frame so as to seal one against another, in the closed position, by means of a flexible membrane which extents from the sealing edges of said blades.
The invention will be further described by reference to the accompanying two figures of drawing in which FIGURE 1 is a vertical section through a double glazed louvre-blade according to this invention.
FIGURE 2 is a part of a horizontal section through a double-glazed louvre-blade according to the invention showing vertical edge details.
With reference first to Figure 1, a louvreblade according to the invention is made up of two identical sheets of glass 1 and 2 which are adhered together at edges so as to form a double glazed louvreblade. Within the seals between edges 3 and 4 are trapped membranes 5, 6 of polypropylene or similar resiliently-flexible thermoplastics sheet material. As shown in Figure 1 when rotated about pivot point 7 to a closed position membranes 5 and 6 seal against abutting surfaces 8 and 9 on adjacent louvre blades.
The adjacent surfaces 3 and 4 may be adhered together by means of a suitable impact adhesive or solvent or heat welding, with the material of the thermoplastics membrane forming the adhesive to form the seal between the glass sheets.
With reference now to Figure 2, this shows a vertical edge detail of a double-glazed louvre blade according to the invention The edges at right angles to those carrying sealing membranes are sealed with sealing plugs 10 made of a thermoplastics material having an outer flange 10a, plane walls 10b and a perforated inner surface 10c which is in communication with the space within the double-glazed louvre blade. The volume bounded by 10a, 10b and 10c is used to contain desiccant material which serves to keep dry the space within the louvre blades.
The sealing plug 10 is sealed into the edge of the louvre blade by means of a silicone or other suitable adhesive.
1. A pivotable louvre blade for use in louvre windows, the said blade being multiple-glazed and having incorporated therein a flexible membrane at each edge which is to seal against an adjacent blade, the membrane being of resilient and flexible plastics material, so that it forms a seal against an adjacent blade when the blades are in a closed position.
2. A louvre blade as claimed in claim 1 wherein the membrane is trapped between, and extends outwardly from, two or more sheets of glazing material forming the louvreblade.
3. A blade as claimed in claim 2 wherein the sheets are of identical section and have two bends therein; 4. A blade as claimed in claim 1 wherein the membrane is formed from sheet flexible thermoplastics material.
5. A blade as claimed in any one preceding claim wherein the blade edges at right angles to those carrying membranes are equipped with sealing plugs which serve to seal the spaces within the double-glazed blades.
6. A blade as claimed in claim 5 wherein the sealing plug includes a desiccant-containing space communicating with the space within the blade.
7. An assembly of multiple-glazed louvreblades pivotably assembled within a frame so as to seal one against another in the closed position by means of flexible membranes which extend from the sealing-edges of said
