Abstract

It is known to coat textile yarn or fabric with a room temperature vulcanising silicone rubber in order to increase the coefficient of friction. During the time taken for the silicone rubber to cure it may change its profile. To overcome that problem the silicone rubber is contacted with steam just after it is coated on the yarn or fabric.

Description

SPECIFICATION Process for increasing the coefficient of friction of textile yarn or cloth This invention relates to a process for increasing the coefficient of friction of textile yarn or cloth.
U.K. Patent Specification No.1425161 describes a processinwhich room temperature vulcanising silicone rubber is deposited on textile yarn or fabric and thereafter the rubber is vulcanised. The silicone rubber takes about twenty minutes to cu re to a tack free condition. To provide for that the coated yarn or fabric is led through a magazine which shives the yarn orfabriefora sufficienttime beforetheyarn orfabric is wound on atake-up reel. We have now found that, notwithstanding the non-slump properties ofthe silicone rubber, there is often a change in profile of the rubberwhile it is being cured. In many cases such a change in profile is undesirable and the present invention has been made in an attempt two deal with that problem.
According to the invention there is provided a process for increasing the coefficient offriction of textileyarn or fabric comprising applying to at least partofsaidyarn orfabrican inert, non-slump, room temperature vulcanising silicone rubber having an elongation of at least three times that of said yarn or fabric, contacting the coated yarn or fabric with steam and thereafter vulcanising the rubber.
Aspecific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows diagrammatically apparatus for carrying outthe invention.
Referringtothedrawing a yarn orfabric 10 is withdrawn from a bin 12 byfeed rollers 14. The material 10 is tensioned by adjustable tensioning means 16 and then passed over a saddle 18 located below a jet manifold 20 which delivers silicone rubber onto the material.
The coated material is then passed through a steam box 22 having a steam inlet 24 and outlet 26 for steam and condensate. Desirably the steam box has a hinged lid. Passage through the steam box preserves the profile ofthe rubber substantially in the form as deposited on the material 10 by the jet manifold.
After leaving the steam box the coated material is led through storage magazine 30. During thetime taken for the material to pass through the magazine the rubber cures. The product is received in bin 32.
The invention is not confined to the specific embodiment just described. Many variations can be made.
1. A process for increasing the coefficient of friction oftextileyarn or fabric comprising applying to at least part of the said yarn or fabric an inert, non-slump, room temperature vulcanising silicone rubber having anelongationofatleastthreetimes that of said yarn orfabric, contacting the coated yarn orfabricwith steam and thereafter vulcanising the rubber.
2. A process as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the coated yarn or fabric is contacted wfth steam during passagethrough a steam box.
3. A process as claimed in Claim 1 or Clatm 2, wherein the rubber is vulcanised during passage of the coated yarn orfabric through a storage magazine.
4. A processfor increasing the coefficient of friction of textile yarn orfabric substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
5. Textilie yarn orfabrictreated by the process as claimed in any preceding claim.
