Abstract
A method of forming a wall of a swimming pool by casting concrete into shuttering assembled on site from modular components, in which the shuttering is built up on site from elements comprising inner and outer slabs 2 assembled together in a predetermined spaced relationship, and an external face of the shuttering being formed by outer slabs which are of a thermally insulating foamed plastics material, the outer slabs being left in situ after pouring of the concrete, so as to provide a layer of thermally insulating material around the pool, while the inner slabs 2 are removed after pouring and setting of the concrete. The inner slabs 2 are provided with indentations 21 into which the concrete enters during pouring, and in which the inner slabs 2 are subsequently removed to leave a roughened surface on the concrete. As an alternative form of indentation, there is shown and described the use of laterally undulating grooves 22. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Swimming pool construction
This invention relates to the construction of swimming pools, which term may be taken to include spa pools and paddling pools of excavated type.
The now expired patent specifications GB-A-1038841, GB-A-1103981 and GB-A-1103511 describe the use of shuttering elements comprising two slabs of concrete joined together in spaced relationship by castin tie bars. The shuttering elements are assembled together to form permanent shuttering for the construction of monolithic concrete walls for swimming pools. This method of construction has been commercially very successful for a considerable number of years.
The factory-formed shuttering elements are heavy to handle and also are difficult to transport as they are comparatively bulky, in view of the spacing between the slabs.
In order to provide a method of constructing a wall for a swimming pool using shuttering components which are lighter and less bulky to transport, our co-pending application 8432351, published under number 2162560 describes and claims a method of forming a wall of a swimming pool by casting concrete into shuttering assembled on site from modular components, in which the shuttering is built up on site from elements comprising inner and outer slabs assembled together in a predetermined spaced relationship, and an external face of the shuttering being formed by outer slabs which are of a thermally insulating foamed plastics material, the outer slabs being left in situ after pouring of the concrete, so as to provide a layer of thermally insulating material around the pool, while the inner slabs are removed after pouring and setting of the concrete.
In this method, both the inner and the outer slabs are preferably formed of a thermally insulating foamed plastics material, which may be a high density polystyrene.
The slabs of each element are conveniently held together in spaced relationship by tie bars, which may be of plastics material. The tie bars may each be provided with a frangible zone to enable them to be broken off substantially flush with the exposed concrete face when the inner slabs are removed.
In such an arrangement, in order to provide reasonably sound joints between the respective slabs of adjacent shuttering elements, the slabs may each have at least one edge, which is normally a generally vertical edge, presenting a longitudinal recess, while the opposite edge is provided with a projection co-operating with the said recess on an adjacent similar slab to allow some angular relative movement without detriment to the effect of the seal between the abutting edges.
A problem arising from the use of foamed polystyrene or like lightweight plastics material is that on removal of the inner slabs from the concrete, the concrete surface is rather too smooth to allow adhesion of rendering layers.
In order to overcome this, there is provided, in accordance with a the present invention, a method of forming a wall of a swimming pool by casting concrete into shuttering assembled on site from modular components, in which the shuttering is built up on site from elements comprising inner and outer slabs assembled together in a predetermined spaced relationship, and an external face of the shuttering being formed by outer slabs which are of a thermally insulating foamed plastics material, the outer slabs being left in situ after pouring of the concrete, so as to provide a layer of thermally insulating material around the pool, while the inner slabs are removed after pouring and setting of the concrete, wherein the inner slabs are provided with indentations into which the concrete enters during pouring, and in which the inner slabs are removed, preferably while the concrete is sufficiently green to separate the concrete in the indentations from the main body of the concrete, to leave a roughened surface on the concrete.
Alternatively, the inner slabs may be removed so as to leave the concrete from the indentations on the surface to form protrusions thereon.
In one form the indentations are arranged in the form of staggered rows of circular blind holes. Alternatively, they may take the form of laterally undulating ribs.
In accordance with a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a wall of a swimming pool when formed by a method according to the invention as set forth above.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial sectional view showing shuttering of the general type to which the present invention relates;
Figure 2 is an elevation of part of one shuttering slab having indentations in accordance with one form of the invention;
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the slab of
Fig. 2;
Figure 4 is view similar to Fig. 2 showing an alternative form of the indentations; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the slab of
Fig. 4.
Fig. 1 shows part of a composite shuttering element comprising a outer and inner spaced slabs 1 and 2 respectively, interconnected by tie-bars 11. Each slab 1 or 2 is of high density expanded polystyrene for strength and thermal insulation. Fitted over the end of each tie-bar 11 is a disc 12 secured by a holding pin 13. Vertical starter reinforcement bars 14 are supported by the tie bars 12 and horizon tal starter reinforcement bars 15 are supported by the bars 14. The tie-bars 11 are shown as having points of weakness 16, so that they may be broken off when the inner slabs 2 are removed after pouring.
This type of shuttering is more fully described in our GB-A-2162560.
Figs. 2 and 3 show part of an inner slab 2 provided with a pattern of indentations in the form of a series of staggered rows of blind holes 21. As an example, the blind holes may be circular in form and of '8inch (3mm) diameter and depth, spaced at 38inch (9mm) centres. When the concrete is poured into the shuttering or formwork formed by the slabs 1 and 2, the concrete flows into the holes 21, and when the slabs 2 are removed, leaving the slabs 1 to form an external thermally insulating cladding, protrusions are left on the surface to provide keying for subsequent layers of screed for tiling or other surface finish. Alternatively, if the slabs 2 are removed while the concrete is quite green, the protrusions may be removed with the slab, leaving a rough surface, which itself provided the required keying.
In the alternative arrangement shown in
Figs. 4 and 5, the indentations are in the form of laterally undulating grooves 22 which are separated by ribs 23. Again, the grooves may be of about 18inch (3mm) depth and of comparable width. The effect is similar.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
