Abstract

A process for the production of higher alcohols in which the feedstock is a gas containing hydrogen, methanol and carbon monoxide in which the hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio is below 0.33.

Description

SPECIFICATION Feedstock process Processes for the manufacture of compounds containing two or more carbon atoms, particularly alcohols (higher alcohols), from synthesis gas mixtures, i.e. mixtures containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and possibly carbon dioxide, do not usually give high yields of individual compounds.
One of the purposes of this invention is to raisethe yields of individual compounds when converting a one carbon atom feedstock into a product containing two or more carbon atoms.
The invention comprises using methanol as part of the feedstock and feeding this to the catalyst along with synthesis gas which is high in carbon monoxide content. The hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio is below 0.33, preferably below 0.25, on entry to the catalyst.
Two extremes of this invention are the feeding of methanol in a carrier gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxidewhich intotocomprisesthe feedstockto the catalyst. Alternatively some or all of the carbon monoxide/hydrogen carrier gas is recycled within a catalyst containing loop and the methanol is injected into the recycled gas before it contacts the catalyst.
Quantitatively the methanol could be injected into such a carrier gas whose composition was such that if contacted underthe prevailing conditions with a methanol synthesis catalyst further methanol would be produced.
Alternatively, methanol could be introduced into such a barrier gas such that the concentration of methanol present in the carbon monoxide/hydrogen carrier gas is greater than 25% of the (calculated) equilibrium methanol concentration the same conditions.
Advantages ofthis invention are that the exothermic heat formation of methanol is not added to any exotherm of any compounds formed, and that the product distribution is altered in thatthe starting point is, in part, now methanol ratherthan just carbon monoxide/dioxide and hydrogen.
1. A process forthe production of higher alcohols from a gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methanol in which the hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio is below 0.33.
2. Higheralcoholswhen produced by means of this invention.
