A board game apparatus is provided comprising markers for moving over a board acting as a playing field, the board being provided with marked spaces constituting a path of course extending about the board. The path affords a continuous track for the purpose of continuity of play with some of the spaces being designated as a starting position or positions for the placement of a player's marker. The other spaces are designated by position, colour or marking so as to constitute a distinguishable path from the or each starting position to a space or spaces designated as a finishing position. One or more sets of cards are provided containing cards each of which relate to a proverb whereby advancement of a player's marker along a path on the board is determined by the skill with which the player identifies the proverb. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to apparatus for playing games The invention relates to a board game apparatus and is intended primarily to provide a game which utilises and tests a player's knowledge of proverbs.
The present invention provides a board game apparatus comprising markers for moving over a board acting as a playing field, the board being provided with marked spaces constituting a path or course extending about the board, said path affording a continuous track for the purpose of continuity of play, some of said spaces being designated as a starting position or positions for the placement of a player's marker, the other of said spaces being designated as by position, colour or marking so as to constitute a distinguishable path from the or each starting position to a space or spaces designated as a finishing position; and one or more sets of cards containing cards each of which relate to a proverb whereby advancement of a player's marker along a path on the board is determined by the skill with which the player identifies the proverb.
Preferably a plurality of sets of cards are provided, each of said sets being graded according to difficulty.
Advantageously spaces or areas along the path or paths of the board are provided having special designations and the apparatus is provided with a set of special cards one of which is drawn by a player as determined by chance when said player's marker rests on a special space or area, each of said special cards indicating a benefit or penalty applicable to said player or an opposing player. These special cards are hereinafter referred to as "Joker" cards.
Also, additional spaces or areas along the path or paths of the board are provided having designations indicative of benefits or penalties applicable to said player, The accompanying drawing, which is a plan view of one form or arrangement of a board for the game will be referred to in more particularly describing one embodiment of the invention, by way of example only.
Proverbs form a very important part of everyday English, both written and spoken. Many people will be familiar with wide range of proverbs, and there are few, who are not familiar with those proverbs which nowadays are routine household catchphrases. The game of course can be used with proverbs of any language.
The game may be played by any number from two to four players, or from two to four pairs of players ranging in age from approximately twelve years to adult. Unlike conventional quiz games all players fully participate, on an equal basis. The game may be played with or without a quizmaster. Because the proverb cards are graded in terms of difficulty players of differing abilities may compete on a more equal basis.
There are 400 proverb cards, each one unique, and each carrying a single proverb. These cards form the basis of the scoring system. Given limited information, each player's task is to identify the proverb. Each card carries a maximum of ten points, and the use of clues costs points. Points earned are scored on the board as shown in the drawing. The resulting points gained give players the opportunity to effect winning strategies and a bluff element on the playing board. Every point scored is equivalent to cm 0,000 and the winner is the first person to score one hundred points, equivalent to one million pounds.
There are four packs of one hundred proverbs, each pack reflecting a level of difficulty from "Junior" through "Regular" to "Senior".
Players can elect to choose a particular pack, for any game, or, by agreement, players of differing abilities may use from different packs. In this manner, a young person can compete, on on an "equality basis" with an adult.
In addition to the four hundred proverb scoring cards, there are fifty four "Joker" cards, which relate to "Joker" positions featured at intervals, round the circuit of the playing board. Also, the playing board features "penalty positions" (red in colour) and "bonus positions" (green in colour) all of which are designed to add the elements of strategy, fortune and bluff to the game The winning player is the first to score 100 points on the board and reach HOME. The game can be repeated many times without repetition of proverbs.
The game is provided with 454 unique cards which are divided as follows: CLASS NUMBERS (a) "Junior" cards J1 to J100 (b) "Regular" cards (1) 1 to 100 (c) "Regular" cards (2) 1 to 100 (d) "Senior" cards 1 to 100 (e) "Joker" cards 1 to 54 Each proverb quiz card contains the following information:an identification number between 1 and 100; the number of words in the proverb in question; a word, or words, from the proverb, and their relative positions, within the proverb; (identification at this stage merits 10 points); a first clue, which may be an alternative meaning, or an additional word and its relative position, or assistance in identifying a key work or phrase, (identification at this stage merits 7 points); a second clue which may be the questioner's own clue, the questioner's own mime, the questioner's own clue or mime, the first word of the proverb, the last word of the proverb, a specific word or an alternative proverb, (success here is worth 4 points, failure earns a zero score); the answer which gives the complete proverb; and finally an explanation of the proverb, moral or an alternative proverb is provided.
Each "Joker" card contains the following: a full proverb (some with good tidings, some with bad tidings); information on how the proverb relates to the person who has just acquired it, and instructions on the manner in which it may be used and when it may be used.
Each player is provided with a pencil and scribble pad for use in deciphering a proverb and a marker for indicating his or her position on the board. The board is provided with four starting points, one for each player. Each starting point is of a unique colour, and the marker for each player is the same colour as that player's starting point and his route on the board from the starting point to HOME on the board.
Proverbs form the basis of the game. Sets of clue cards contain information to allow players to identify the proverbs and thus gain points. A player's ability in recognising proverbs is rewarded with an appropriate level of points. The points gained are plotted along the board.
The playing board circuit is characterised by "penalty positions", "bonus positions" and "Joker positions". Strategically players can influence where they land on the board by the manner in which they identify the proverb and the resulting points gained (10, 7 or 4). "Penalty" and "bonus" positions state clearly the number of points the player must retreat or advance.
Stopping on a "Joker" position entitles the player to a "Joker" card which contains a directive or a possible strategy. As the game progresses players will acquire "Joker" cards. As a result strategy, bluff, attack and self defence feature strongly in the game generating challenge, excitement and fun.
Every player's objective is to win or, this being unlikely, to prevent other players winning.
The game is educational, involves strategy, bluff, and an element of chance.
The game is flexible in approach and may employ the following variations: Two to four persons pitting their wits against each other. The quizmaster post rotates, so that everyone plays the game.
Players team up and compete against others in pairs. This format allows six or eight players to fully participate.
A quizmaster is appointed and holds this position throughout the game and does not participate throughout the game and does not participate as a player.
The Rules of the game are as follows: 1. Agree player table arrangements. If partners are competing they sit opposite each other (Partners do not collaborate in identifying the proverb.. They do hpwever use the same marker.
2. Select the pack(s) of quiz cards to be used.
3. Choose board markers.
4. Have pencils and scribble pads at the ready.
5. All cards must face downwards. Cards are drawn from the top and replaced on the bottom. A player draws from the same pack for the duration of the game unless the original pack is exhausted.
6. Hyphenated words count as one word 7. Oniy the person posing the quiz card is entitled to see any of the details on the card until that card has been completed and the points moved along the board.
8. The quiz cards are always addressed to an individual. If that player fails to gain any points on the specific quiz card it is thrown open to the next player in rotation. The first with the correct answer written down gains four points.
9. The youngest player is given the honour of answering first. The quiz card is posed by the person opposite unless a quizmaster has been appointed.
10. The rotation of play is clockwise as is progress around the scoreboard circuit.
11. The time allowed to answer any stage on a proverb quiz card is 30 seconds, from the point where the full information has been given.
The timing may however be altered, as a house rule, by agreement before the game starts.
12. Only one answer, the first, is accepted.
13. Absolute accuracy is not essential to the spirit of the game, once it is established that the player has identified the proverb and used the correct number of words, unless the game is being played on a serious competitive level.
14. The points gained on any quiz card are plotted along the board.
15. A player landing on a "bonus" or "penalty" spot, must move by the points stated and in the direction indicated. A player landing on a "Joker" spot must pick the top "Joker" card and all players are bound by the Rules on the cards.
16. A "Joker" card may be held as a strategic card unless it is stated otherwise on the card. When a "Joker" card is used it must be shown publicly and replaced on the bottom of the deck.
17. "Jokers" used as strategic cards may only be used after a particular play has been completed and the points moved along the board, and before the next proverb quiz card is picked up and addressed to the player. All players are bound to accept the ruling from a Joker card in so far as it is directed at them.
18. The first player to arrive HOME is the winner, having collected a total of 1,000,000.

ACTION: You can either (a) Add 40,000 (4 points) to your own score (b) Reverse the leader by 60,000 (6 points) The remaining proverb cards and "Joker" cards contain information similar to that given above.
The game also involves the use of specially printed facsimile banknotes which are used during the game. On successfully completing a proverb, the player receives banknotes equivalent to value of the points scored. Banknotes are also distributed in accordance with instructions given on "Joker" cards and bonus and penalty spots. The winner is the first player to accumulate banknotes to the value of one million pounds.

Claims (7)

1. A board game apparatus comprising in combination a board and markers for moving over a board serving as a playing field, the board being provided with marked spaces constituting a path or course extending about the board, said path affording a continuous track for the purpose of continuity of play, some of said spaces being designated as a starting position or positions for the placement of a player's marker, the other of said spaces being designated as by position, colour or marking so as to constitute a distinguishable path from the or each starting position to a space or spaces designated as a finsishing position; and one or more sets of cards containing cards each of which relate to a proverb whereby advancement of a player's marker along a path on the board is determined by the skill with which the player identifies the proverb.
2. A board game apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, in which a plurality of sets of cards are provided, each of said sets being graded according to difficulty.
3. A board game apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which spaces or areas along the path or paths of the board are provided having special designations and the apparatus is provided with a set of special cards one of which is drawn by a player as determined by chance when said player's marker rests on a special space or area, each of said special cards indicating a benefit or penalty applicable to said player or an opposing player.
4. A board game apparatus as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which spaces or areas along the path or paths of the board are provided having designations indicative of benefits or penalties applicable to said player.
5. A board game apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims adapted to be played in accordance with the rules of the game herein.
6. A board game apparatus including a board substantially as described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
7. The features described in the foregoing specification, or any obvious equivalent thereof, in any novel selection.
