Description

SPECIFICATION Potato cake The present invention relates to a potato cake.
Edible potato compositions are well known, but their lack of strength as compared with, for example, pastry makes it unsuitable for use in a hand held dish.
According to the present invention, there is provided a potato cake comprising an outer layer made from mashed potato and flour and anediblefilling in which the layer is wound spirallyaboutthefilling.
The filling may be meat or vegetable based and the potato cake may be seasoned or not.
In orderthatthe invention may be more clearly understood, one embodiment thereof will now be described byway of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a side elevational view of a potato cake, and Figure2 shows a cross sectional view of the cake of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the cake comprises an outer potato layer 1 surrounding a filling 2. The layer consists of mashed potato and white orwholemeal flour. This is first laid out flat and the filling placed on it after which the layer is wound up so that the complete cake, which is closed at opposite axial ends, exhibits a spiral form in cross section.
The filling may take many different forms. It may comprise a "sausage" consisting of a guaranteed weight of lean pork mixed with cerial mainly wholemeal and bran, and low in fat. The "sausage" content may be changed to guaranteed weight of lean beef, lam b, ham, chicken, tu rkey or other su itable meat or fish. The potato layer may be varied by seasoning with onions, herbs, garlic, cheese, curry or other seasoning. The cake may be dipped in batter and deep fried. The meat based "sausage" replaced by a sausageshape of a single or mixed variety of vegetables. the cakes may be supplied in different sizes for example small, medium and large. The above described cake provides a handheld meal based on a traditional British dish of sausage and mash. It provides a relatively healthy fast food, high in fibre and low in fat.The main components, "the sausage" and "potato cake" may be esily and separately manufactured in mass with easy quality control, transport and storage at the point of retail sale. It is easily prepared and served on site using standard equipmentgrill griddle and deep frier. It may readily be served for consumption on the premises combined with otherfastfoods- baked beans; eggs; bacon; veg etablesoron its own with a variety of sauces and relishes which can be added before "wrapping" with the potato layer. It is easily adaptable forthe take- away trade either for immediate consumption or in standard insulated packages. It can easily be reheated in oven or micro-wave without impairing quality. Itisreadilyadaptableforfreezing on an in dustrial scale for use as a fast food in the home.
There are many possible combinations of "sausage" content and potato cake with seasonings to suit many tastes including vegetarian. It may easily be made in, for example, a range of th ree fixed sizes to suit varying appetites, guaranteeing weight of main food content.
It will be appreciated that the above embodiment has been described by way of example only and that many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
