Description

SPECIFICATION A ground surface renovating and finishing system This invention concerns a system for renovating andfinishing ground surfaces such asturf, particularly in cases where the surface has been roughened, for example, on a sports field. To prepare the ground for further use it is necessaryforthe broken surface to be aerated,to enhance drainage, then levelled and finally finished by rolling.
Conventionally, these processes are carried out individually requiring three or more differenttools each to be towed ordriven overthe ground behind a tractor or like towing vehicle, one at a time.
An object of the present invention is to provide a complete system which can perform on turf or other surfaces such as cinder, all of those functions which are necessaryto restore the surface to an acceptable condition, in a single operation.
Accordingtothe present invention there is provided a ground surface renovating and finishing system comprising a supporting framework for attachment to a tractor, the framework having leading and trailing ends, a rotatable spiking tool extending transversely across the framework adjacent the leading end thereof, at leastonetransverse row of raking tines behind the spiking tool, and a roller behind the raking tines, the relative heights ofthe spiking tool, the row of raking tines and the roller being arrangedsuch that at least one ofthem is in contact with the surface ofthe ground over which the framework is towed in the direction of its leading end.
An embodimentoftheinventionwill now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a side view of a ground surface renovating and finishing system in accordance with the invention.
The system comprises a framework generally indicated at 10 and including a first frame member 11 adapted to be fixed, by adjustable pivotted arms 12, to the towing hitches of a tractor so that the member 11 may be raised and lowered by the operator.
Attached to frame member 11 is a pair of cross beams 1 1a carrying, at each end, a second frame memberl3extending downwardly.Themembers 13 carry between their lower ends in bearings 14, a rotatable shaft 15. A spiking tool extending transversely across the framework 10 consists of a row of toothed discs 16 fixedly mounted on shaft 15 and arranged such that the teeth of alternate discs are aligned with the spaces between the teeth of the interposed discs.
Extending horizontally from vertical frame members 13 are two horizontal frame members 17, one at each end of the lower of the two cross beams 11 a, and the members 17 carry between them a horizontal platform 18 and a tubular beam 18a to which are attached by bolts 19, two spaced rows of vertically depending sprung raking tines 20, one row positioned behind the other. Beam 1 8a together with tines 20, is adjustable in height relative to members 17, by releasing the bolts 19.
Further attached to horizontal frame members 17, rearward of beam 18 is a pairof brackets 21 whose height relativetoframe members 17 areadjustable by bolts 22 passing through slots 23. Brackets 21 carry a cross-member having vertical end members 24 between which is rotatably attached a roller 25. A resilient scraper 26 is also attached to and between frame members 24thus to bearonthe surface of roller 25.
At the rearward end of horizontal frame members 17 there are pivotally attached a pair of arms 27 which carry between them a brush 28. A chain 29 which is accessible to the tractor operator may be used to raise the brush to an inoperative or travelling position as indicated at 28a.
Itwillbeseenthattheworking heights of the roller 25 and brush 28 are suchthatthey rest upon the surface 30to be treated whilst those of the teeth 16 and raking tines 20 are lower to penetrate the surface. In use, as the system stowed over rough turf, the teeth ofthe spiking tool are caused to aerate the ground to permit percolation of moisture and standing water, the raking tines actto open the surface, remove debris therefrom and generally levei and spread any broken pieces ofturf. Thereafter, the surface is lightly rolled and smoothed by roller 25 and finally groomed and striped by brush 28 which lifts the grass also to assist in drainage and aeration.
Thus the system may be used to restore the surface of, for example, a football field after play to enhance its recovery for subsequent use and to improve the appearance of the turf. The process can be carried out in a single operation thus avoiding the need for driving a tractor over the su rface th ree orfour times as would be necessary with a conventional system in which spiking, raking, rolling and brushing operations must be carried out individually.
If required, the individual heights of the spiking tool, the raking tines and the roller may be adjusted to suit the conditions of the turf, and indeed, one or more of these parts may be lifted to be clear of ground whilst the others remain engaged with the surface.
Platform 18may be used to carry additional ballast for improving the effectiveness of the working implements under hard surface conditions. Alternatively, or in addition, platform 18 serves to accommodate any tools ortreating materials which are required to be transported with the equipment.
1. Aground surface renovating andfinishing system comprising a supporting frameworkfor attachment to atractor, the framework having leading and trailing ends, a rotatable spiking tool extending transversely across the framework adjacent the leading end thereof, at least one transverse row of raking tines behind the spiking tool, and a roller behind the raking tines, the relative heights ofthe spiking tool, the row of raking tines and the roller being arranged such that, in use, at least one of them is in contact with the surface of the ground over which the framework is towed in the direction of its leading end.
