Abstract

In a so-called flat-brush type liquid applicator provided with a point-tuft which is constructed of fibrous elements and takes a flat configuration of its cross-section, the improvement resides in that: at least one partition wall 1d,1d' is provided in a front end opening of a front shaft 1b being connected to a main body of a liquid applicator, through which front end opening a point-turf passes, so that the front end opening is divided by the partition wall into a flat main opening portion 3 through which said point-tuft can pass and ventilation-holes 4,4' provided outside said main opening portion. The point-tuft is shaped into said configuration by means of the opening 3. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Liquid applicator This invention relates to a liquid applicator, particularly of the flat-brush type.
Flat-brush type liquid applicators are used, for example, as cosmetic applicators such as for nail polish and the like; writing instruments such as with pen-type brushes and the like; and drawing brushes and the like. These liquid applicators are generally equipped with an application means ("point-tuft") comprising a bundle of fibrous elements having substantially flattened cross-section. Hitherto, in this kind of liquid applicator, it has been necessary to employ a point-tuft which is formed with a flat configuration.
However, it is not generally easy to produce a flat bundle of fibrous elements and which will keep its shape, Consequently, it takes much time and money to produce such conventional liquid applicators.
We have now found it possible to provide a liquid applicator having a flattened point-tuft even when formed from a point-tuft having, for example, a circular cross section, i.e. even when a specially produced flattened point-tuft is not employed.
According to the present invention, there is provided a flat-brush type liquid applicator having a point-tuft comprising fibrous elements with a flattened cross-sectional configuration, wherein at least one partition wall is provided in a front end opening of a front shaft connected to the main body of the liquid applicator, through which front end opening the point-tuft passes, the partition wall(s) serving to divide the front end opening into a main opening portion through which the point-tuft can pass and one or more vent portions.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way on non-limiting example and with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a front shaft portion of a liquid applicator according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a partial longitudinal sectional view of a pen-type brush according to the invention.
As shown in Fig. 1, reference numeral 1 denotes a substantially circular cylindrical front shaft portion made of plastic, which front shaft 1 may be connected to a shaft sleeve main body 2 (Fig. 2) of a pen-type writing brush.
The front shaft 1 is provided with a relatively large diameter sleeve portion 1a and a smaller diameter sleeve portion 1 b. The inner wall of the portion la of the shaft 1 may be threaded for engagement with the shaft sleeve main body 2.
The shaft 1, enables the point-tuft to be fixed to the shaft sleeve main body 2 together with other components installed inside the shaft sleeve main body 2.
In a front end opening of the smaller diameter sleeve portion 1 b of the shaft 1 are provided at least one, preferably, a pair of partition walls id, 1d' which define a main opening portion 3 positioned in a central portion of the front end opening of the smaller diameter sleeve portion 1 b, together with at least one, preferably, a pair of vents 4, 4' which are symmetrically disposed on opposite sides of the main opening portion 3.
A point-tuft 7 is positioned inside the shaft 1 and comprises a bundle of fibrous elements.
The tuft is conveniently provided with a flange portion 7a at its rear end which is clamped between a plug element 6 abutting the front surface of a tubular element 5 which guides the liquid to be dispensed by the applicator, and a shoulder portion 1 e provided on the inner surface of the shaft 1.
The point-tuft 7 may be simply constructed as a bundle of synthetic resin fibers which would normally take a substantially circular cross-sectional configuration. When the pointtuft 7 is inserted through the main opening portion 3 of the shaft 1, the front portion of the point-tuft 7 passing through the opening 3 of the shaft 1 takes a substantially flat crosssectional configuration according to the configuration of the opening 3. The point-tuft 7 keeps its circular cross-section in the rear portion which has not passed through the opening 3 of the shaft 1.
The liquid applicator of the present invention has the above construction in order to enable the point-tuft 7, having any cross-sectional configuration, to be shaped into a substantially flat cross-sectional configuration by means of the opening 3 of the shaft 1. There is therefore no need to bundle the point-tuft 7 with a flat shape during fabrication, so leading to the simplification of the manufacturing process and therefore a decrease in costs.
In addition, since the opening 3 of the shaft 1 has a flattened configuration, vents 4, 4' defined by the partitions 1d, 1d' are provided.
These vents 4, 4' provide larger venting means than that employed in conventional writing instruments or applicators which employ fine grooves in the inner surface of the front end opening portion of the front shaft as the venting means. In addition, in the applicator of the present invention, fibrous elements of the point-tuft 7 received by the opening 3 are hindered from entering the ventilationholes 4, 4' by the partition walls 1d, 1d'.
There is therefore little fear that the vents 4, 4' will be clogged by the fibrous elements of the point-tuft 7. This enhances venting in the applicator of the present invention in contrast with a conventional writing instrument or liquid applicator.

Claims (5)
