Butter - spreaders. - A combined bread cutting and buttering machine comprises a rotary holder for a plurality of loaves, a rotary cutter, and a butter container with a spreading roller. The loaves are contained in crates 7, 8 which each have one side 15 spring-pressed and a lid 20 hinged and spring held. The crates are mounted on circular end frames 1, 2 fixed on a rotatable shaft 3. The shaft 3 is rotated constantly, to bring the loaves into contact with a rotary cutter 19, by a train of gearing from the cutter shaft 90. Means for intermittently feeding the loaves forward a predetermined distance include a feeder 26 which engages the rear of the loaf and is in the form of a lug on an internally threaded sleeve mounted on a screwed rod 24. The latter carries also a pinion 28 adapted to mesh, as the shaft 3 rotates, with a fixed segment 29 which is formed with a series of sections 36 - - 41 each section having a different number of teeth. The pinion 28 is splined to the rod 24 and may be moved along it by a hand-lever 45 to engage any of the sections of the segment. At each revolution of the shaft 3 the pinion 28 engages the chosen section of the segment and rotates the rod 24 feeding forward the pusher 26 a distance corresponding to the section chosen. The rod 24 may be rotated by a hand operated pinion 49 to return the pusher rapidly to starting position. The butter receptacle comprises a container 68 pivotally mounted in a vertical position, and having a removable cover 69 and a spreading roller 78. The receptacle is rocked into contact with the loaf, as the shaft 3 rotates, by linkage 63, 64 and a rocking lever 62 operated by a cam 61 on a shaft 54 rotated by a train of gearing from the shaft 3. A second cam 67 on the shaft 54 operates, through a pawl 86 and ratchet wheel 85, a plunger 77 whereby the butter in the receptacle is fed to the spreading roller. The train of gearing from the shaft 3 to the shaft 54 includes two pinions 51, 52 having different gear ratios, and either of these pinions may be moved to form part of the train, to cause the butter receptacle to be rocked once or twice for each revolution of the shaft 3, thus causing either one or both of the loaves to be buttered before the slice is cut.
