Description
SPECIFICATION
Security panel for a new or existing door
The invention relates to a security panel for a new or existing door.
According to the invention there is provided a metal security panel adapted to be fitted over one surface or skin and the upright edges of a new or existing door, the edges of the panel, which, in use, lie adjacent the vertical edges of the door, being folded or otherwise formed to provide rebates overlapping the door frame.
Preferably said edges of the panel are bevelled towards the door frame.
It is also preferred that the panel includes a profiled member attached to the internal surface of the panel. Insulation material may be provided between the support member and the panel.
The panel may further include door hinges incorporating angled dog bolts which project into the respective upright of the door frame when the door is closed.
The panel may have a recessed construction for accommodating door furniture, e.g. a lock cylinder and/or door knob, within said recess.
The invention also provides a door having a panel as defined above attached thereto along the upright edges of the door.
In the case of the panel having the abovementioned support member, the panel is also preferably connected to the door by means of one or more brackets fixed to said surface or skin of the door and projecting through respective apertures in the support member of the panel.
A panel or door as defined above may be provided in combination with a head rail adapted to be attached, in use, to the door frame head member.
By way of example, a specific embodiment in accordance with the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door having a steel folded panel fitted thereto and a head rail attached to the door frame head member;
Figure 2 is a section along line 2-2 in Fig.

Figure 3 is a section along line 3-3 in Fig.

Figure 4 is a section along line 4-4 in Fig.

Figure 5 is a perspective of detail X in Fig.
3;
Figure 6 is an elevation of a modification of the invention in which the panel is recessed to accommodate the door furniture; and
Figure 7 is a section along line 7-7 in Fig.
6.
This example concerns a metal security panel 10 which can be fitted to a new or existing door. The door 11 may be of any type, e.g. a wooden door or a metal door and solid or hollow Figs. 2 and 3 are drawn to indicate both a wooden door 12 or a mild steel honeycomb infilled door 13.
In the embodiment of Figs. 1 to 5, the panel is a straight steel sheet 14 spaced from the adjacent surface or skin of the door by a profiled core member 15 which supports the sheet against impact and acts as a further obstruction to cutting. The member 15 is attached to the internal surface of the sheet 14 and enables the panel to be infilled with further insulation or bullet resistant material (not shown).
The side edges 16 of the sheet 14 are folded, or otherwise formed, to lie at least against the upright edges of the door 11 and to form rebates 17 for the upright of the door frame 18. In this embodiment the edges of the sheet are folded around the edges of the door to lie also against the extreme portions of the other surface or skin of the door (see
Fig. 2).
The folding of the sheet edges in this manner to form the rebates 17 results in the edges of the panel overlapping the uprights of the door frame. Moreover, in this embodiment, the sheet edges are folded to provide a bevel 30 directed towards the door frame making it even more difficult to lever the door away from the frame.
The top and bottom members of the panel comprise channels 29, which likewise extend over the adjacent edge of the door and, in this embodiment, onto the extreme portion of the surface or skin of the door which is remote from the panel.
The panel is attached to the door by rivets or screws along the upright edges of the door. Also, in this embodiment, the panel is secured further by cranked brackets 19 rivetted or screwed to the adjacent surface or skin of the door and projecting upwards through respective apertures 20 in the profiled core member 15 of the panel (see Fig. 5).
The door hinges are cranked stainless steel hinges 21 incorporating angled dog bolts 22 which when the door is closed project through slots in the respective upright of the metal door frame or into a recess in the upright if it is a wooden door frame. If desired, the dog bolt of each hinge may be L-shaped to provide additional security.
The door as illustrated in Fig. 1 has a lock cylinder 23 and knob 24 fitted flush on the panel. Alternatively, as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the door furniture may be accommodated in a recess 25 in the sheet 14 of the panel. The recessed hardware locations make access for attack difficult. In either arrangement, a lock cylinder only may be provided, or other door furniture may be provided.
Above the panel 10, is a pressed steel head rail 26 which fits over the door frame member 27 and which is rivetted or screwed thereto.
The head rail 26, is folded to provide a downwardly bevelled edge 28 and forms an additional security cover. If desired, the head rail 26 may extend forwardly of the panel and may have a groove in its underside so that it acts as a weather drip section.
It will be appreciated that the panel 10, hinges 20 and head rail 26 combine to form a security kit for attachment to a new or existing door, and which can easily be replaced if damaged by attempted forcing or vandalism.
