Description
SPECIFICATION
Button-backing member
This invention relates to a button-backing member for attaching the ball-or socket-side piece of a snap fastener or other button piece to the fabric of a garment or the like.
The backing members in use for attaching buttons such as the ball- and socket-side pieces of snaps and other buttons to garments are classified into a few types. One type has a central tubuiar shank to be clinched, such as of an eyelet, or has a central post or column to be clinched, and another type uses needlelike legs like prongs along the edge portion of a disklike piece. By way of example, a backing member of the eyelet type, designated generally at 10 in FIGS. 8 to 10, will now be explained. The backing member 10 comprises an eyelet 13 having a tubular shank 11 adapted to be curled outward at the tip by a curling and clinching die and being supported at the base by a flange 12, and a cap 14 fitted over the base flange 12 and turned and crimped securely together with the flange on edges.
As FIG. 10 shows, the tubular shank 11 of the backing member 10 is passed through the fabric 16 of a garment or the like and is curled and clinched securely along the surrounding edge of a center opening at the back of a button 15 (in the embodiment shown, the ball-side piece of a snap fastener) to attach the button firmly to the fabric 16.
The other backing members, of the column and prong types, are attached in similar manner.
Disadvantages common to these backing members will be clarified below, taking an eyelet as an example. As FIGS. 8 and 9 show, the eyelet 13 is made up of a base flange 12 either in a disk form as in FIG. 8 or deformed as in FIG. 9. The flange retains its original shape after a cap 14 has been fitted thereon. With backing members of this type it sometimes occurs that the rim 17 of the cap 14 turned along the flange 12 cannot be crimped securely in place because of the springback of the sheet metal. In such cases, the eyelet 13 and the cap 14 will rotate relative to each other. This relative motion is most undesirable since it impairs the legibility or discernibility of the letters, marks, or designs with which the cap 14 is often marked on the exposed side.
To avoid this it has been proposed, for instance by
Japanese Patent Application Public Disclosure No.
610029/1983, to form a protuberance on a part of the eyelet flange and a corresponding notch adapted to engage the protuberance on the curled rim of the cap (a counterpart of the rim 17 in FIGS. 8 and 9).
According to the proposed innovation, however, an inconvenience is caused in that the eyelet and the cap must be located in positions in a predetermined angular relation before the edge portion of the cap is turned back and pinched in place.
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a button-backing member comprising an eyelet or the equivalent whose flange and a cap thereon are fastened together lest the cap rotate with respect to the flange.
The present invention provides a button-backing member body comprising a base flange and an upstanding arrangement thereon, an edge portion of the base flange of the body being bent obliquely upwardly.
The invention also provides a button-backing member including a body as described in the preceding paragraph, wherein a cap is applied to cover the base flange and is turned back and crimped on the edge portion to form a retaining rim embracing the edge portion of said base flange.
The rim of the cap is turned back and crimped against the springback of the bent edge region of the flange to retain the flange unmovably. The invention thus precludes the unwanted motion of the cap that has been a problem of the prior art. It also overcomes the difficulty associated with the assembling of the backing member disclosed in
Japanese Patent Application Public Disclosure No.
610029/1983.
The present invention will be described below in connection with three embodiments thereof, which are all made of metal. For decorative purposes the cap surface may be finished, for example, by plastic coating, or may be printed directly, embossed or debossed with patterns, marks, and so forth.
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a button-backing member embodying the invention; FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line A-A of FIG. 1; FIG. 3 is a vertical sectional view of an eyelet for the first embodiment of the button-backing member; FIG. 4 is an enlarged view of essential parts of the first embodiment of the backing member; FIG. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the second embodiment of the button-backing member according to the invention; FIG. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the eyelet of the second embodiment; FIG. 7 is a sectional view of the third embodiment using a member instead of an eyelet; FIG. 8 is a vertical sectional view of a conventional eyelet; FIG. 9 is a vertical sectional view of another conventional eyelet;FIG. 10 is a backing member as attached in place for buttoning; and FIG. 11 illustrates the fourth embodiment of the invention.
First embodiment
FIG. 1 to 4 illustrate the first embodiment of the backing member according to the invention as a two-piece combination, comprising an eyelet 1 as the main body and a cap 2. The eyelet 1 consists of a tubular shank 4 and a disklike flange 3, both formed in one piece of metal by drawing. The cap 3 consists of a disk 6 having a slightly downwardly bulging undersurface (decorative face) and a retaining rim 7 forming the edge portion of the disk and turned back and crimped about the edge of the base flange 3 of the eyelet.
As shown in FIG. 3, an edge region of the base flange 3 of the eyelet embodying the invention is bent obliquely upward at an angle a to the horizontal. The width wand the angle a of the upwardly bent edge region 8 can be chosen empirically with ease; they vary with the material, thickness, and other factors of the eyelet and the cap.
FIG. 4, an enlarged fragmentary view of the essential parts of FIG. 2, shows the retaining rim 7 of the cap pressing the edge region of the base flange 3 in place against the upward urging of the base flange 3 of the eyelet. Before the eyelet is capped, its upwardly bent edge region 8 is in the position indicated by the alternate iong and two short dashes lines. Upon mounting of the cap in place, the retaining rim 7 of the cap forces down the bent portion 8 to the position of the full iines. This produces an additional locking force between the eyelet and the cap in engagement. Even if the curling and crimping force of the retaining rim 7 is rather insufficient, there is no possibility of the cap turning with respect to the eyelet.
Second embodiment
FIGS. 5 and 6 show the second embodiment of the button-backing member. Here the parts like those of the first embodiment are given like reference numerals since the two embodiments are identical excepting the contour of the base flange 3 of the eyelet 1. In this embodiment the base flange is stepped at 9 for added friction with the fabric or the like to be buttoned. This flange also has an obliquely upwardly bent edge region 8 that characterizes the present invention. The second embodiment thus achieves the same functional effect as the first.
Third embodiment
This embodiment (as shown in FIG. 7) uses a backing member body 1 of a structure different from an eyelet, consisting of a base flange 3 and an upright columnar shank 4' in the center. Along its edge portion is formed an obliquely upwardly bent region 8. Like the counterparts of the first and second embodiments, the body 1 is capped to be a complete backing memberforthe intended use.
Fourth embodiment
In the fourth embodiment, the invention is applied to a pronged structure. The backing member body 1 (as illustrated in FIG. 11) consists of a base flange 3 and a plurality of needlelike projections 4 upstanding thereon, with an obliquely upwardly bent region 8 formed along the edge portion of the base flange 3. The rim of a cap not shown is turned back and crimped tightly with the bent region to complete the backing member for the function desired.
As described above, the button-backing member according to the invention has an obliquely upwardly bent region along the edge portion of the base flange of the eyelet. Therefore, when the rim of the cap has been turned back and crimped together with the edge of the flange, a good fastening action is attained and the cap is prevented from turning with respect to the flange. Moreover, the simplicity of construction makes the backing member easy to manufacture.
