Abstract
A road sign (2) is provided which is attachable to a traffic cone (1) either by a loop (5), which passes over the top (4) of the cone, or by a prong (14), which fits into the recess in the cone top (4). The sign (2) has upper and lower panels (12, 13) hinged together, the hinges (6) defining an aperture (10). An auxiliary sign panel (7) has a flange (8) at its top edge which may be inserted into the aperture (10) and so cover the lower panel (13). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Road sign
This invention relates to temporary road signs.
At present temporary road signs are set up on easel supports by the side of the road, as and when required. Such signs are undesirably bulky.
According to the present invention there is provided a sign adapted for attachment to a traffic cone or the like.
In a preferred form the sign is provided with a loop which can be passed over the top of said cone to attach the sign to the cone.
Preferably the loop is a chain, suitably of metal.
An alternative form of attachment comprises a downwardly extending prong on the rear of the sign for insertion into a hole in the top of the cone.
In a preferred form the sign comprises a plurality of sign plates hinged one above the next.
If desired a separate auxiliary sign plate may be provided, having rearwardly projecting hook means, insertable between adjacent upper and lower sign plates so as to support the auxiliary sign plate in front of said lower sign plate.
In another aspect of the invention there is provided a sign which comprises a main sign plate and separate auxiliary sign plate, the main sign plate being apertured to receive rearwardly projecting hook means on the auxiliary sign plate whereby the auxiliary sign plate can be detachably mounted on the main sign plate.
Preferably the main sign plate comprises upper and lower sign plates hinged one to the next with a gap between them which provides said aperture.
Preferably the auxiliary sign plate is dimensioned so as to obscure indicia carried by the lower sign plate.
Preferably said hook means comprises a flange along the top edge of said auxiliary sign plate, to fit between the hinges of the main sign plate.
In order that the invention may be more clearly unerstood, various embodiments, given by way of example only, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of one embodiment of sign attached to a cone;
Figure 2 shows a perspective view from the rear of the auxiliary sign plate;
Figure 3 shows a front view of the sign with the auxiliary sign plate; and
Figure 4 shows a fragmentary perspective view from the rear of an alternative embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, a rectangular folding sign 2, comprising upper and lower sign plates 12, 13 respectively joined by hinges 6, is attached to a cone 1 by means of a loop of chain 5. The loop 5 is attached to the sign 2 by a nut and bolt 3, though a rivet or other attachment means could be used. The loop 5 is passed over the top of the cone 4 and is supported by the cone at the level at which the circumference of the cone equals that of the loop. Thus, the device will fit a variety of sizes of cone, provided that the top of the cone is small enough to enter the loop 5, and the loop will be arrested at a suitable level on the cone.
The use of a chain restricts the sign rotating in the wind, movement by the sign will cause the chain to be wedged even tighter onto the cone. However loops of other materials could be used.
Fig. 2 depicts an auxiliary sign plate 7 with a flange 8 along its top edge which may be inserted into the join 10 between the two plates 12, 13 of the folding sign 2, between the hinges 6, and thereby support the auxiliary plate in front of the lower sign plate 13.
The auxiliary plate 7 must be wide enough to cover the information depicted on the lower plate 13 and the corners 9 of the auxiliary plate 7 are cut away so as to avoid the hinges 6 and allow it to be left in place when the sign 2 is folded up.
In Fig. 4 the sign plate 2 is attached to the cone by means of a prong 14 which is inserted into the hole 15 in the top of the cone 4, said prong being attached to the sign plate 2 by means of bolts 16 or the like.
While these embodiments depict a rectangular sign of the type used by police forces, the invention is however applicable to road signs of other shapes and other uses, such as triangular signs of the type used by, for example, road workers. The sign can be made from a flexible material and is not limited to metal.
1. A sign adapted for attachment to a traffic cone.
2. A sign according to claim 1 wherein the sign is provided with a loop which can be passed over the top of said cone to attach the sign to the cone.
3. A sign according to claim 2 wherein the loop is a chain.
4. A sign according to claim 1 wherein the sign is provided with a downwardly extending prong on the rear of the sign for insertion into a hole in the top of the cone.
5. A sign according to any one of the preceding claims which comprises a plurality of sign panels hinged one above the next.
6. A sign according to claim 5 wherein a separate auxiliary sign panel is provided, having rearwardly projecting hook means, insertable between adjacent upper and lower sign panels so as to support the auxiliary sign panel in front of said lower sign panel.
