Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for automatically producing lines and bands on ceramic products
This invention relates to an apparatus for producing lines and bands on ceramic products in the shape of hollow crockery, particularly cups.
Cups are known to be provided, between the bottom edge and the top of the handle, with a pattern of lines or bands, passing the whole way round.
These lines and bands are usually produced by hand.
DE-A 2005799 dicloses a mechanical system forthe automatic production of lines and bands, but only for those of the continuous kind. The technical possibility of making the line or band overlap facilitates the decorating process. Ataskwhich it has hitherto not been possibleto perform with a machine is decoration with broken lines and bands, particularly in underglazing processes. The production of broken lines and bands still involves, without exception over-glazing operations which are time-consuming and require large quantities of material.
This invention seeks to provide an apparatus for automaticaliy producing lines and bands on ceramic articles, particularly of the type to which suction can be applied, in the zone between the upper limit ofthe handle and the foot ofthe ceramic object. In other words an apparatus for the automatic underglaze decoration of broken lines and bands.
This invention further provides an apparatus for the automatic underglaze decoration of ceramic objects, particularly cups, with lines and bands, ensuring accurate and reproducible broken lines and bands between the top ofthe handle and the foot of the ceramic article.
According to this invention there is provided apparatus for producing lines and bands on hollow ceramic crockery objects, the apparatus comprising a base carrying a rod system rotatable about all axes, the said rod system being coupled through a rigidly connected guide rod bearing a spring to the bar 13 which carries brush mounts and a vertically adjustable spacer roller, the brush mounts being connected through the bar to dosing devices for colouring matter and a suction device serving to take up the object onto a robotic arm, a ring being fixed onto the suction device and carrying a hinged mechanism, a pneumatic cylinder and steel plate aprons arranged in pairs and having a width of between 8 and 12 mm and a thickness of between 0.05 and 0.1 mm,the robotic arm having a hot-air supply device and the base having a drum-shaped wipersupportwith a working cylinder and two rotatably mounted levers corresponding to the steel plate aprons arranged in pairs with the head ofthe levers carrying wipers and rinsing nozzles.
In this system a cup, for example, after the white drying or incandescent firing, is moved by industrial robots to the correct position in front of the appar atusfortheproduction of lines and bands, the handles are covered by steel plate aprons, the line and band production apparatus is fed to the cup and the lines and bands then produced on this latter. The fact that the handles are screened off in accordance with the invention makes it possible to provide the ceramic product, such as a cup, with broken lines and bands, that is with lines and bands which do not continue the whole way round. The steel plate aprons are arranged in pairs and have a width of 8to 12 mm,the thickness of the material being 0.05 to 0.1 m. They are connected to a pneumatically operated hinged mechanism. The said hinged mechanism is situated on a wrist, which is controlled by means of an industrial robot. The steel plate aprons, according to the invention, are subjected to hotairfrom a nozzle in order to avoid accumulations of colouring material in the application and removal of the brush for the production of the lines and bands. The steel plate aprons are advantageously provided with a water-repellent coating, such as of paraffin, in orderto make residues of colouring matter far less liable to adhere thereto.
In consequence ofthe unavoidable colour matter residues on the steel plate aprons these latter have to be cleaned after approximately every three applications ofthe decoration. According to the invention the ceramic product is taken up by a suction device flanged by a ring on to a wrist, this latter being in turn connected to an industrial robot. To the ring is secured a hinged mechanism bearing the steel plate aprons in pairs, the distance between them corresponding to the width of the handle. The ring also bears a hot-air supply device by which the steel plate aprons are heated. After the ceramic product has been taken up by the suction device the steel plate aprons arranged in pairs are resiliently pressed onto the surface ofthe ceramic product, in the vicinity of the handle, by a pneumatically operated hinged mechanism.By means of a flexible industrial robot the ceramic product is moved, with the handle covered bythesteel plateaprons, tothe brush mount, in orderto enable the colouring material to be applied, and is caused to perform a defined rotary movement.
According to the invention one or more brush mounts and a vertically adjustable spacer roller are provided on a bar affixed by means of a guide rod and a spring to a rigidly clamped rod system. The rod system is connected to a base in such a way as to be adjustable in all axes. The brush mounts are connected through the barwith corresponding colourproportioning devices suitably mounted on the frame. The brush and sponges requiredforthedecorating operation can be removed and replaced according to the width required for the coloured band.
The spacer roller provided on the bar ensures lines and bands of even and reproducible thickness, as the unevenness and roughness ofthesurface ofthe cer- amic product are counterbalanced by the vertical movement ofthe bar. Alternatively the uniform and reproducible thickness for the lines and bands can be ensured by the use of a rebound nozzle in place ofthe spacer roller. This rebound nozzle is provided with the brush and/or sponges on the bar. The bariscon- nected via 2 guide rods with springs to the rod system which is rigidly affixed to the frame. Athreaded spindle is also attached to the bar by means of a threaded bushing and is connected to the servo motor secured to the rod system. The servo-motor is set in operation with a power supply, through an adjustable transformer and an operation amplifier in a defined manner and in accordance with the pressure conditions in the pneumatic line. The springs provided on the guide rods exert a stabilizing function in this connection. Afterthe ceramic product has commenced to rotate colouring matter is enabled to flow through the dosing devices connected to the brushes. On reaching the second steel plate apron the flow of colouring matter is stopped and the ceramic product moved away from the brush. The application of colour can be repeated a numberoftimes according to requirements. The steel plate aprons arethen lifted off the surface ofthe ceramic product by means of the hinged mechanism and the said ceramic product separated from the ring and subjected to the glazing process.According to the invention the steel plate aprons carrying the residues of colouring matterarecleaned inthefollowing manner: thehinged mechanism situated on the ring and the steel plate aprons connected with the said mechanism and arranged in pairs are conveyed to a drum-shaped wiper support rigidly connected to the frame. Underneath the wiper support is provided a collecting vessel. On a level with the drum-shaped wiper sup- port the frame carries a working cylinder which is also connected to two rotatably mounted levers situated in succession to each other in accordance with the distance between the steel plate aprons. Wipers and rinsing nozzles are provided on the heads ofthe levers. The rinsing nozzles are connected up to a supply of rinsing medium. The steel plate aprons bearing residues of colouring matter are placed by their lower sides on the drum-shaped wiper support by means ofthe hinged mechanism, after which the levers are conveyed with wiper and rinsing nozzle onto the upper side of the steel plate aprons by means ofthe working cylinder. When the lever with the wiper and the rinsing nozzle is conveyed to the upper side of the steel plate aprons the rinsing nozzle is thereby set in operation, the said steel plate aprons being cleaned by a rectilinear movement which they are caused to perform by the flexible industrial robot.
The colour matter residues carried alongwith the rinsing medium are caused to accumulate in the collecting vessel. The steel plate aprons, after having been moved out, are returned to their initial position by the hinged mechanism and subjected to a further line and band application process.
The apparatus according to the invention enables ceramic products, particularly cups, following one another but not in order of size, to be automatically decorated with lines and bands by the underglazing process. Since the ring may also be fitted with a number of hinged mechanisms with the appropriate steel plate aprons in each casethefunctional principle described allows for the decoration of cups with two handles or other brakes in surface continuity.
Jugs, coffee pots and other vessels can be decorated using the same principle.
The invention its further explained in greater detail by reference to examples and the accompanying drawings. In the drawings:- Figure 1 shows in section a diagram of an appar atuswithouta cleaning station, F;gure2shows a modification with rebound nozzle, and Figure3shows in section a diagram of a cleaning station.
Example 1
The apparatus according to the invention will be described with reference to a cup with a handle as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The cup 2, appropriately centered and rotated, is taken up by a suction device 5 situated on a wrist 10. The ring 6 rigidly connected tothesuction device 5 bearsthe hinged mechanism4 ofthe steel plate aprons 3 arranged in pairs and the pneumatic cylinder8 connected to the hinged mechanism 4. The steel plate aprons are 8 to 12 mm wide and 0.05 to 0.01 mm thick.Afterthe cup 2with a handle has beentaken upthe hinged mechanism4is set in operation via the pneumaticcylinder8andthe steel plate aprons 3 are resiliently placed on the surface of the cup 2, the said steel plate aprons 3 are then heated by the hot-air supply device 7. The said hot-air supply device 7 is positioned on the wrist 10 and cntrolled by means of a flexible industrial robot 9 by which the cup 2, with the handle covered by the steel plate aprons 3, is conveyed to the brush mount 12 and caused to perform a defined rotary movement.
The brush mount 12 and the vertically adjustable spacer roller 11 are situated on the vertically adjust- able bar 13. The said bar 13, in its turn, being connected by the guide rod 16 and by the spring 14 mounted on the latter, to the rod system 15 displaceable in all axes on the base 10. The brush mounts 12 are connected via the bar 13 with the dosing devices 18for the colouring matter. When the cu p 2 is conveyed to the brush mounts 12 and starts the defined rotation the flow of colouring matter is released via the said dosing devices 18 and the cup 2 is provided with lines from one ofthe steel plate aprons 3 onwards until the other steel plate apron 3 is reached. The said flow is stopped just before the cup reaches the said other apron 3.By the vertical movement ofthe spacer roller 11 and the simultaneous vertical movement of the bar 13 rough or uneven places on the surface ofthe cup 2 are compensated during the production ofthe lines. Afterthe completion ofthis latter process and by means of the wrist 10 and the flexible industrial robots 9 the cup 2 is moved away from the brush mounts 12, separated from the suction device 5 and subjected to the subsequent glazing process. The steel plate aprons 3 bearing the residues of colouring matter are conveyed after each three decorating cycles to the drum-shaped wiper support 33 by means ofthe hinged mechanism 4. The drum shapedwipersupport33 is rigidly mounted onthe base 1. On a level with the drum-shaped wiper support 33 the base 1 is fitted with a working cylinder 34 having two rotatably mounted levers 35. The levers 35 are situated in succession to each other, in accordance with the distance between the steel plate aprons 3 arranged in pairs. Thewiper38 the rinsing nozzle 37 are provided on the head of the levers. The rinsing nozzle 37 is connected to the rinsing medium via the connection 36. A collecting vessel 32 is provided underneath the drum-shaped wiper support 33.
Afterthe steel plate aprons 3 have been placed in position the rotatable levers 35 are pressed onto the upper side of the said steel plate aprons 3 by means of the working cylinder34 and the rinsing medium enabled to flow. By means of a rectilinear movement ofthe steel plate aprons3the residues of colouring agentarecarriedalong bytherinsing medium by the aid ofthe scrapers 38 and allowed to accumulate in the collecting vessel 32. Afterthe completion ofthe rectilinear movement the steel plate aprons 3 are moved into their initial position by means ofthe hinged mechanism 4 and subjectto a fresh lining process. The lever 35 is likewise moved into its initial position by the working cylinder 34.The brush mounts 12 are optionally removable and replaceable by sponge mountsforbands.
Example 2
In the following example an alternative version, ensuring accurate and reproducible line thickness, is described with reference to a cup with a handle as shown in Figure 2.
As already mentioned under Example 1, the cup 2 istaken up bythe suction device 5 and the handle covered over by the steel plate aprons 3. The cup 2 is then conveyed to the brush mounts 12 and caused to perform a defined rotary movement via the wrist 10 andtheflexibleindustrual robot9. In addition to the brush mounts 12the bar 13 bearstwo guide rods 16 with spring 14 and a rebound nozzle 19. The said nozzle 19 is connected via a pneumatic line 23 with a measuring transformer 24. Through an operation amplifier 25 the electrical signal received actuates the servo-motor 22 which is rigidly mounted on the rod system 15. Athreaded spindle 21 connects the servo-motor 22 to the bar 13 via a threaded bushing 20 affixed to the said bar 13.
