Abstract

Novel compounds are disclosed, of formula: <IMAGE> wherein R is C1-C4 alkyl, R1 is C1-C4 alkoxy, R2 C1-C4 alkyl or a is C1-C4 alkoxy, R3 is C1-C4 alkyl and R4 is C1-C4 alkyl or hydrogen. Sunscreen compositions for epidermal application, containing one or more of the compounds as active component, are also disclosed.

Description

SPECIFICATION Sunscreen The invention relates to materials which when applied epidermally to human subjects absorb UV radiation in the range of wavelengths responsible for sunburn.
The active component of compositions provided by the invention is a compound of the formula:
wherein R is C1-C4 alkyl (eg methyl or ethyl), R, is C1-C4 alkoxy (eg methoxy or ethoxy), R2 is C1 C4 alkyl or Ct-C4 alkoxy (eg methyl or ethoxy), R3 is C1-C4 alkyl (eg methyl) and R4 is C1-C4 alkyl (eg methyl) or hydrogen.
R, R1 and R2 preferably contain the same number of carbon atoms.
Two specific compounds of the above general formula are:
The specific compounds specified above and other active compounds included within the scope of the general formula set forth are novel compounds and are per se included within the scope of the invention.
In compositions according to the invention, the active component is admixed with an excipient or carrier serving to enable the composition to be distributed over an epidermal area. Suitable materials for this purpose are well-known in the art and widely available.
An ester of a dibasic aromatic carboxylic acid such as hydroxybenzoic acid may be included in the composition. For example, p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester may be included. It is thought that such an ester will be produced in situ by interaction of the two dimethylamino compounds specified by formulae above.
Propylene glycol and/or ethanol may also be present.
A specific composition which has been found in tests to have highly desirable UV-filtration properties has the following composition: COMPONENT % by weight Propylene glycol 59.5 Ethanol 21 p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester 1 p-N,N(dimethylamino)-m-methyl, m-methoxy-benzoic acid methyl ester: C,2H,7NO3, M.W. 223 6.9 p-N,N(dimethylamino)-m,m(diethoxy)-benzoic acid ethyl ester Ct5H23NO4, M.W. 281 11.6
CLAIMS 1. A compound of the general formula:
wherein R is a Ct to C4 alkyl group, R1 is a Ct to C4 alkoxy group, R2 is a Ct to C4 alkyl group
