Abstract

A palletised carton (10) of thick cardboard is connected to the pallet (12) by two transversely-extending members (32, 34) on the upper portion of the pallet which lie within the carton. The members (32, 34) lie above longitudinal flaps at the lower part of the carton. The carton (10) and the pallet (12) are attached to each other by relative sliding movement, there being a stop (50) on the pallet (12) to locate the carton (10) accurately on it, and the carton (10) may be stapled to the pallet (12). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Palletised carton This invention relates to palletised cartons, that is to say cartons which have a pallet fixed to their base.
There are various forms of palletised carton available on the market. The aim of the present invention is to provide a simplified construction wherein the pallet is attachable to the base of a carton in a particularly easy way.
According to the invention a carton had a pallet attached to it by sliding the latter along the base of the carton until a stop on the pallet abuts against a side wall of the carton.
An example of a palletised carton in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view from above of the palletised carton; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton lying on its side so as to show the construction of the pallet; Figure 3 is a perspetive view of the pallet alone; Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the middle portion of the pallet; Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view of an end portion of the pallet; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the carton lying on its side with the pallet being slid along the base of the carton; Figure 7 is an enlarged perspective view of part of Fig. 6; Figure 8 is an enlarged perspective view of a lower part of the carton and an end portion of the pallet attached thereto; Figure 9 is a plan view of the main part of the base of the carton seen from the inside;; Figure 10 is a fragmentary vertical section through the lower part of the carton a part of the pallet showing the manner in which the pallet slides along the base of the carton; and Figure 11 is a perspective view of the carton with its top flaps removed to show the flaps which make up the base of the carton.
The palletised carton shown in the drawings comprises a thick cardboard carton 10 which is stapled or otherwise attached to a pallet 12, the pallet being attached to the base 14 of the carton.
The pallet 12 is shown in detail in Figs. 3-5 of the drawings. It comprises three parallel wooden runners 16, 18 and 20 which extend longitudinally of the carton 10 when attached to the latter, the outer edges of the two runners 16 and 20 being flush against the side walls 22 of the carton. The three runners are each supported on three wooden blocks 24 with the blocks in turn being supported on three transversely extending base members 26 which lie on the ground of other supporting surface.
The middle runner 18 has two short lengths of wood 28 and 30 nailed or otherwise attached to its upper surface as shown in Fig.
4. The adjacent but spaced-apart ends of the two lengths of wood 28 and 30 support two transversely extending carton-supporting members 32 and 34 made of wood. As will be seen from the drawings, the width of the lengths of wood 28 and 30 is less than the width of the runner 18.
As shown in Fig. 1, the carton 10 has two upper flaps 36 and 38. These have been omitted in the view of the carton shown in Fig. 11 so as to illustrate more clearly the base of the carton which comprises two longitudinal flaps 40 and 42 and two transverse flaps 44 and 46. As shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the longitudinal flaps 40 and 42 have opposed edges which do not meet each other, thereby providing a channel 48 between them.
This therefore permits the pallet 12 to be slid lengthwise along the base of the carton with the middle runner 18 lying beneath the longitudinal flaps 40 and 42 as shown in Fig. 10 and the transverse members 32, 34 lying above those flaps. The width of the lengths of wood 28 and 30 on the middle runner 18 is therefore slightly less than the width of the channel 48 between the longitudinal flaps 32.
and 34 of the carton.
The sliding movement of the pallet along the base of the carton is illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 both of which show the pallet engaged with the base of the carton. The sliding movement continues until a flat end stop 50 at one end of the middle runner 18 abuts against a side or end wall 52 of the carton as shown in Fig. 8. Once the pallet has been brought into this position with respect to the base of the carton, the two transverse flaps 44 and 46 shown in Fig. 11 are swung downwards on to the longitudinal flaps 40 and 42 so that the final result, as seen from the inside of the carton, is as shown in Fig. 9. The pallet thus has the two transverse members 32 and 34 lying inside the carton with the flaps 40, 42, 44 and 46 all stapled or otherwise attached to the runners 16, 18 and 20 and the lengths of wood 28 and 30 lying beneath the base of the carton.
It will therefore be seen that the pallet is brought into the correct position on the carton by a simple sliding operation as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and that accurate location of the pallet with respect to the carton is ensured by the end stop 50. Moreover, the presence of the two transverse members 32 and 34 of the pallet within the carton ensures that the two are held securely together irrespective of whether there are goods in the carton or not.
