Abstract

218,012. Minerals Separation, Ltd., (Minerals Separation North American Corporation, Ltd.). March 29, 1923. Flotation processes.-In a froth-flotation process for concentrating ores and coal, a frothing- agent is used consisting of an aromatic hydrocarbon having one or more methyl groups, such as xylene, or consisting of a substance, such as solvent naphtha, containing a large proportion of such hydrocarbons. The frothing agent may also contain in solution a heavy aromatic coal tar derivative such as cresol, naphthalene, or anthracene, or their derivatives, and such heavy body may be viscous or semi-solid, such as asphaltic material; an oil such as pine oil may also be present. The process may be applied to the concentration of a value in an ore containing also normally flotable iron, or to the selective flotation of lead in preference to zinc and iron; and in the case of an ore consisting partly of oxidized values, the unoxidized values may first be separated by the process, whereafter the pulp may be sulphided and a further flotation process applied. Specifications 122,454 and 159,285 are referred to.
